i is an art photography project that showcases the strength & flexibility of the female form.
i celebrates beauty and trust.
Tell me more about i.
The project was born out of my interest in the human figure combined with my first yoga class experience. During the class as I participated, I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful shapes and lines as we went through the different poses.
The central concept of the project is ‘everyday women, nude, showcasing their abilities of strength and flexibility'. All sessions were shot in my studio, using a high key lighting style on white seamless, and processed to give a flawless, smooth look.
Who are the subjects? The subjects of the book are a cross section of society – there were no conditions or requirements to participate other than being over 18 and interested in the concept. Subjects ranged from women totally comfortable with their bodies to the camera-shy who had never posed for a photo shoot – let alone nude.
The shooting process
All shoots took place at my studio, and consisted of 20-40 poses (many inspired from yoga and dance), and took anywhere from 2-3 hours. During the shoots, there was a lot chatting, laughter and fun; many opened up about things like jobs, relationships, travel, etc. It almost seemed like a therapy session sometimes.
How did I get here?
During one shoot in particular, I had a model that revealed her mom was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Originally this project was about me wanting to share with others something I have been passionate about for many years. However, after that session, the project started to evolve. Instead of creating something on a smaller scale that I would benefit from, why not create something larger that would benefit many people. This is when the concept of this book began to form.
What i isn’t...
i is not censored.
i is not vulgar.
i is not gratuitous nudity.
i is not exploitation.
What i is...
i is what is created when there is a trust between the model and photographer.
i is a revel of the human form.
Will it have words?
No. i will include only a dedication, introduction and a thank you to all those that participated or were involved in the project.
Please be aware that the book does contain full nudity. The images shared online have been carefully chosen as 'internet friendly'. The project is all about the human form and it’s strength and flexibility.
What kind of book will this be?
i is going to be 12x12, hardcover coffee table book with approximately 130 pages, black and white photos on 100lb high quality paper. This Kickstarter covers a half of the first edition run of 1000 copies, and all copies ordered via Kickstarter will be signed.
More about the rewards?
This project is a labour of love – and I am committed to getting this work out there to honour all of the participants who put their trust in me. I have created all the usual rewards including signed copies of the book, prints, as well as some unique rewards.
I have offered the opportunity for a personal lessons for those passionate about figure study portraiture.
Also, there is the opportunity to purchase a session, in the same style as the book, where you become the model. You will also receive framed prints from the session.
All prints are printed on a premium luster photo paper using archival inks which have a life expectancy of 100+ years.*
*As tested by the manufacturer of the printer and inks.
Where is all the money going?
$5,000 is a lot of money. It will cover 1/2 the costs involved in the design, the preparation of files, printing and shipping books and making and shipping prints.
Please note that Kickstarter is an ALL or NOTHING approach - if we fall short by $1 the project does not go ahead. But it is fine to go beyond the goal - I will deliver on all rewards listed.
Thank you for taking the time to read this far - please support the project by pledging your support and sharing this page with your friends.
Risks and challenges
The shooting is complete, the images are ready to go. This is my first book project, and I have assembled a team that has many years experience of producing art books. There is always a risk of delays and hiccups in the design, printing and delivery processes. To cover these I have obtained at least three acceptable quotes for each step, and I have included significant buffers in my timeline to cover delays at any stage in the project to ensure delivery by late December 2013.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
