About this project
What is Iconic Disc?
Iconic Disc gives your Mac an identity. It is a thin, magnetic frame that fits seamlessly over the glowing backlight of your Apple. The frame is designed to hold an image printed on photo paper or a transparent film, just like a photo in a picture frame. When set in place, the image is then illuminated by the captivating glow of the Apple logo. It lets you add your own style to your MacBook without disrupting it's clean design. Should you ever grow tired of one image, you can quickly swap it out for a picture of your crazy pet, a shot from your last vacation, or a graphic of your company logo...the options are endless.
Why did we create Iconic Disc?
We combined our different strengths of design and business and set out to create a new product that would revolutionize the way we personalize our MacBooks. We have found that currently, stickers and cases are common personalization options. Neither of these satisfied our need for something less permanent and confining. Stickers are a hassle to remove and leave a nasty residue, and cases can be thick and bulky, hiding the natural beauty of your naked Mac. Most of these options often end up defacing your MacBook, which is exactly what we didn't want to do. We wanted to design a product that would complement Apple's clean design aesthetic, be non-damaging, easily interchangeable, and most of all, completely cool. We were inspired to develop a product that celebrates the ambient glow of the Apple logo in a way that's never been done before. We have been working extremely hard to bring Iconic Disc to life. We hope you like this idea as much as we do.
Iconic disc is made of premium materials because it will live on a premium product.
We spared no expense and chose only the best materials. The main ring is machined out of aircraft grade aluminum, glass bead blasted, and anodized, just like your Macbook. Neodymium rare earth magnets are press fit into the underside of the ring. These magnets are attracted to the landing pads which are stamped from sheet steel, tumbled to a high shine and plated with a protective nickel coating. A strong, non-permanent 3M adhesive is used to secure them to your laptop. We chose a scratch resistant acrylic lens. This lens has a machined edge with a beautiful, smooth radius that snap fits perfectly into the main ring. The final part that makes up a complete disc is the image layer. It is suspended between the lens and ring and can be printed on photo paper or transparent film.
The Evolution of Iconic Disc
Rome was not built in a day and neither was Iconic Disc. We've devoted our nights and weekends, over the past 12 months, to creating and perfecting how Iconic Disc looks and functions. Tony, who has 16 years of 3D modeling and design experience, used his skills and expertise to build our proof of concept models. We used a 3D program called Modo to create digital files for rapid prototyping. We then took the rapid prototypes one step farther using traditional machinery and hand tools to create realistic prototypes. It took dozens of these prototypes to come up with a perfect design. With a product like this, every millimeter matters and we believe we have achieved the perfect little product to adorn your MacBook.
Take your Apple logo back in time
How it Works
You have three different options to create your image layer. Print your own image, choose from our image library or ProPrint™ (email us your image and we will print it for you.)
Select a pledge category
1. Print your own ($25 category). Choose between a black or silver disc. You'll receive your Iconic Disc in the mail. Use your MacBook and choose your favorite graphics program, upload your image, scale and print. See our how to guide. Use the clear acrylic lens as a cutting template. Either an exacto blade or scissors will do the trick. Make as many as you like and interchange all the time. That is the beauty of Iconic Disc.
2. Choose from our library ($30 category). Choose between a Silver, Black or the limited edition Kickstarter Green disc. Go to our library below and select an image. You will receive your Iconic Disc with your selected image in the mail. If you feel like making an image on your own as well, refer to the print your own category above.
Library of licensed images
We've purchased a number of licensed images, creating a small image library for you to select from. We chose these images specifically because they work well when illuminated by the Apple. Whether you decide to use our library or print your own image, we believe personalization is truly up to you.
3. Pro Print ($35 category). Choose between a Silver, Black or Limited Edition Kickstarter Green disc. Pro Print means we do the printing for you. Email us an image you'd like to have displayed on your MacBook. You will receive your Iconic Disc with your ProPrint image in the mail. If you feel like making an image on your own as well, refer to the print your own category above.
*the $25, $30 and $35 pledge levels will include: 1 landing pad carrier, 1 aluminum disc (black, silver or green), 1 clear acrylic lens and instructions for use.
How it glows
We discovered that the Apple silhouette will be seen in some images but can be camouflaged in others. A black or dark background will conceal the Apple silhouette, while ligher images will let the silhouette show through. Experiment with images to find what works best for you.
Applying your landing pads
We designed a landing pad carrier to help you perfectly align the landing pads to your laptop's logo. We've centered and located the landing pads for the best aesthetics and most abundant glow.
*Should you ever be in the mood to let your backlight breathe a little, the whole Disc can be lifted away cleanly, leaving no unsightly marks or ugly residues. You can keep the landing pads on to compliment your laptop’s logo or choose to easily remove them and get back to square one. (Note: the landing pads are not reusable and can not be placed back on once removed).
Two ways to customize
1) It's easy to swap one colored disc for another by simply removing it with a slight twist and pull to release the magnetic grip.
2) With the disc removed, you are also able to change your image by popping out the acrylic lens and placing in a new image.
Put your fears to rest, the magnets used in Iconic Disc will not harm your MacBook's LCD/LED screen or hard drive. Magnets are placed in various areas all around your Mac's display. They are used to keep the lid closed, put your computer to sleep and to attach your magsafe power cord. Gone are the days of the old CRT TV screens which were susceptible to damage from magnetic fields. LCD/LED screens are not affected by the small rare earth magnets used in Iconic Disc.
Designed to stay on when needed...
Where the funding will go
We have made great progress with our own funds up to this point but this is where we need your help Kickstarters. Products take a lot of time and money. Here are some areas where we need funding to make Iconic Disc become a reality.
• Tooling and Development. We need to industrialize our prototypes in order to mass produce each part that makes up Iconic Disc. To begin production of these parts, we will need funding, as the factories request an MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity).
•Website At this point we have a landing page but we need to turn our website into a full retail site. Visit our website by clicking here.
•Application for uploading, framing, printing and ordering your discs. We have a template made but need to develop and code the app to make the customizing experience simple, smooth and fun. We also want to offer a pre-perforated paper that will be the exact size for the disc in order to alleviate having to cut out your own images.
• Creative packaging. We want to ensure our packaging is as refined as our product.
• Licensing images. We want to expand our library to offer you a larger variety of images to choose from. To do so, we are looking into licensing agreements with sports teams, video games and many more.
• Patents. We needed to protect our idea.

Risks and challenges
Quality is our top priority. In order to make that happen we have to decide who is the best manufacturer for us. We have sourced and built prototypes with a manufacturer in Taiwan and three locally in Southern California. All have produced high quality parts, however, quality control needs to be watched closely to maintain our standards no matter whom we decide to team with. Iconic Disc is made up of various parts that fit intricately together. This demands a very high level of machining and care at every step. Ideally, we would like to keep production in the USA but the risk is financial, related to the high cost of parts and machining. The risk with Taiwan is simply geographic location and quality control. We have built relationships with each of our manufacturers, and with Tony's product design background, he is able to communicate directly with the manufacturers to ensure that we will always deliver a premium product.
When a product goes into full-scale production there is an inevitable possibility that unforeseen problems will arise. Have you heard of Murphy's Law? We have been extremely thorough, rigorously testing our proof of concept models and fine-tuning our prototypes to lower that possibility. Our prototypes have proven to work flawlessly, as they were designed. Now the challenge is to carry over the prototype process into a production type run. We also need to develop a smooth running assembly system that will expedite assembly time and also stay within quality parameters. We have solved all manufacturing issues to ensure each part can be made with their respective machine. In the event that some issues arise, we have made it our strong policy to remain fully transparent and inform you of the steps we are taking to keep things moving forward with your product as promised.
With your support we will bring you the best product possible as quickly as possible. We hope that you are as excited about Iconic Disc as your MacBook will be! Please help support us and spread the word to all your family and friends.
