About

The storyline of my book, Icicle on his Bicycle, sees our intrepid hero, Icicle, an independent husky dog dashing about the landscape exploring the world on his cherished mountain bike:

I know a husky, Icicle, a splendid hound you'd like, who trekked the landscape dashing off, astride his mountain bike.

He'd go on great adventures and make new friends everywhere; whenever sad, he's grab his bike and go get some fresh air!

His farmyard friends would cheer him on, when dashing through the mud; with bleats and chirps, they'd scurry so, escaping if they could!

His boundless exuberance constantly gets him into trouble with his human carers and he is passed from foster home to home.  Eventually, even his current kind and patient family gets a little peeved by his antics.  Upset that he has failed them, he runs away and tries to find his own place in the world:

getting lost in the process:

Fortunately for him, though, he meets Raven:

and with a little guidance from this wise and "most compassionate bird", Icicle's life changes.  But how?!

What happens so that we get this:

Then this:

And eventually even this?

Could there be a happy ending?!

Would you like to sponsor me and see this project into fruition so that you and other readers can discover what happens to our poor, beloved Icicle?

The idea of my book project is that by depicting a human-like story through the charachters of other species, children will get the sense that other animals have feelings just like they do and that they also need to be loved and to belong.  This will hopefully encourage them to see animals (as well as humans!) as sentient beings and to, thus, treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve, a consideration that might seep into the young reader's adult life.

Perhaps the book will also help children remember that each of us has our own niche that is just waiting to be discovered no matter how much at odds with the community we might feel.

Risks and challenges

I wish to use an environmentally-aware book printer and to use as much recycled paper as possible. There is a risk that the printing quality isn't as good as I hoped and It takes be a few attempts to find the right option, which might mean that the actual production of this project takes longer than I initially envisaged and costs more. Luckily, there are several publish-on-demand printers who will forward me a hard copy for proofing and it will be just a matter of time before finding the appropriate printer.
