About This Project:
After playing with some amazing Chicago musicians for over 20 years, I realized there was always a part of me that needed to write and record my own albums. I recorded my first CD in 2005, followed by several other full-lengths and EPs. Funding for those recordings came out of my own pocket and it was a balancing act to say the least! I enjoyed every penny of it. But financially, I just couldn’t keep it all going, which is what brings me here to Kickstarter.
I have had this concept album idea in the back of my mind for quite a while now. Originally it was going to be two cd’s, but I condensed it down to one. It will be comprised of material that I’ve been writing for the past year. It will also include my Dec. 2011 single “Come of Age (New Sun)” (watch Kickstarter video to hear most of this song). I’ll be working with same amazing group of musicians that have been with me on all my previous recordings at Studio Ballistico in Chicago, under the brilliant guidance of sound engineer/co-producer Tim Sandusky.
The theme of the album is the awakening of humanity, a subject that is very important to me. It’s about being broken inside and out, getting to a point where suffering is no longer an option, and realizing the only choice is waking up and evolving out of unconsciousness.
Ultimately, my intention with the concept album is to fuse music, visual art and spiritual awareness. To help make that happen, I’ve asked my friend Samuel Kirkman, an amazing illustrator and graphic novelist based in Northern Californina, to bring this to life visually. He’s going to illustrate the album cover, the CD itself, and an eight page web comic based on the CD.
You are asking for $25,000 to record an album?
No, it's $25,000 minus 5% to Kickstarter, 5% to Amazon Payments, and setting aside another 25% for taxes. I will need approximately $17,000 to make this concept album and all the visual art work that goes along with it. This will pay the studio musicians and sound engineer over a span of several months, make it possible to include graphic novelist and illustrator Sam Kirkman's amazing eight page web comic and CD bootklet/CD design which I feel are essential components and it will cover the printing of physical CD’s and all associated original album artwork.
I am looking at the late spring/early summer of 2013 for completion of my concept album.
Thank you all for giving my musical/spiritual project room to breathe itself into reality. Words really can’t explain how grateful I am!
