About

A short genre film in the tone of The Descent, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and HALLOWEEN.

While babysitting a precocious 6 year old, Mia is stalked by a shadowy presence that trips the home security system. As loud beeps sound off whenever a door or window is opened, the system meant to protect her becomes an amplifying terror while she attempts to survive the night.

Safe and Sound is an atmospheric love letter to all things 70s/80s Steven Spielberg & John Carpenter. Growing up in the suburbs, I’ve always had a deep fondness for horror and science fiction that revolved around contemporary, everyday life. Visually stunning films that brought the impossible what-ifs and terrifying unknown into our homes and leave you questioning every bump in the night.

Late one night while staying with my girlfriend's family (watching a horror film no less), we both hear the ominous beep-beep of the home security system. Already primed and on edge from the film, it took us a moment to rationalize what could have opened or closed in the house. We quickly came to the conclusion that it was her grandmother opening a window and since we survived the night, that was most likely the case.

...but what if it wasn't?

We were so conditioned to the security system's beeps that someone or something could have gotten inside and we would be none the wiser. Over the following months, Joshua Storms and I crafted that moment into a tight, tension filled sci-fi nightmare.

The best horror films submerge themselves in social commentary and Safe and Sound is no different. There’s a lot of uncertainty in the world right now. While people want to feel secure and rely on the news/leaders to tell them everything is okay, it can become a repeating signal of anxiety and stress. Even worse is growing accustomed to the bad news and falling into complacency. What I want to explore and capture in this short is the concept that the very thing that should be helping and supporting Mia is actually terrorizing her. Each time the security system beeps is a moment of horror and not of safety.

We are looking for $10,000 in addition to our own funds to cover production costs and will shoot the film this summer.

Halloween
Halloween

Moody and atmospheric, inspired by the heavy anamorphic style of 70s and 80s cinema. We’ll build the tone and feel with ambient sources; warm lamps and accent lights of the home mixing with the cold teal blast of motion sensing lights surrounding the house. We want to embrace the dark corners of a tranquil environment, a familiar, yet stylized look of an older suburban home.

Let Me In
Let Me In

Using the JAWS approach of less-is-more, we’ll thoughtfully frame and light to avoid revealing too much of the creature, leaving it mostly in the darkness and only seeing the movements of its grotesque shadow. In the end, immersive sound design will do the heavy lifting when it comes to portraying the stalking monster. Although we are planning for some limited digital effects, I want to capture as much of the blood and terror in camera.
