I'm seeking like-minded folk to help me bring this richly illustrated book and playing card deck to life. The large format book of my original paintings and poetry explores the myth of Laylah, the 'Angel of Night'. I want to create a lavish book that enchants and inspires. A beautiful and bewitching book that you will love to own and treasure for years to come. The poker sized playing cards deck features 52 beautifully dark gothic images.
This fully illustrated deluxe hardback book measures 12 x 8 inches. Printed to high quailty specification, this thread bound book contains 80 pages of heavy stock 200gsm satin paper, each lovingly designed and produced in full colour throughout.
The book is to be printed using very traditional lithographic techniques, rather than inkjet or digital printing. In lithographic printing, the desired print image is burned onto a plate and is then transferred from the plate to a rubber blanket, and then to the printing surface, giving greater clarity to the images and text.
Presenting reproductions of over 40 paintings and drawings alongside evocative and soulful poetry of enchantment, love, loss, longing and redemption.
The themes within the book, both the artwork and verse, are inspired by the myth of Laylah. Come on a journey with me into this bewitching mythology of mystical concepts. It is Laylah who chooses a soul from the Garden of Eden and commands it to enter the embryo. She watches over the development in the womb and shows the rewards and punishments available to the individual. Before birth, Laylah then strikes the newborn above the lip, making it forget what was learned and creating the philtrum. Laylah serves as a guardian angel throughout a person's life and at death leads the soul into the afterlife.
She set into motion the activities of the night, the stars, to aid Kings in defeating their enemies. In this context much of the poetry relates to a deep, spiritual romance, conveying the love between the earthly self and the higher self, often described as The Beloved. Within the poetry this concept is also adopted to symbolize romantic love,as well as the deep love of a parent towards their child. In Arabic the name Laylah is an adjective describing the deepness of night, a collection of the poems explore the lure and lull of the night, of quiteness, stillness and the mysterious realm of dreamsleep.
The name Laylah also refers to the intoxication of wine, an idea expressed within this anthology as the life-essence of blood, relating to themes including Lilith, and her connection to the vampire myth.
Along with the book I am offering a collection of exclusive signed book plates in the form of signed lithographic prints. These measure 12 x 8 inches, and are professionally printed on heavy 400gsm satin finish art card. Each is presented in a protective sleeve with backing board. Please see below for those available, I hope to include further fine art book plates as the campagin progesses.

Laylah is just the beginning!
I have plans in place to publish a whole collection of quaily, collectors gift books. These will be available exclusively to my friends here on Kickstarter. Each will be lovingly illustrated throughout with new and previously unpublished artwork. The themes of this collection of books will focus on myths, legends and faerietales, drawing esotoric secrets from these ancient stories and presenting them in a heartfelt way, enthusing them with a vibrancy and freshness that touches and inspires the soul in a modern world. Reminding us that there are deeper, subtler, more wonderous truths and feelings woven within us, that are so easily forgotten in our busy lifes. The forthcoming publications will consist of both poetry collections centered around the concepts of a particular myth, as well as retelling of ancient and classic faerie tales, such as 'Beauty and The Beast' and 'Briar Rose'.
In order to create this continued collection of art books I need your personal support in bringing the first in the series 'Laylah' to life. As well as owning an exclusive signed copy of Laylah, you will be:
- Personally helping to bring about a collection of sumptuous, lovingly created books
- Keeping alive the ancient myths and tales of our forbearers
- Supporting the craft of traditional painting
- Exploring the secrets of human existance and spiritual knowledge as perceived by our ancestors
- Investing in my creative process and soul-felt vision through painting, developed from many years of musing, wondering, experimenting, learning, trying and re-trying in order to develop my craft
Thank You so much for your support!
Risks and challenges
As with any new project there may always be unexpected obstacles or delays. I have undertaken a great deal of research for the project, and have had extensive talks with both the London based printer and various shipping and fulfilment companies. The printers are a well established company, specializing in high quality fine art books, and have worked on many Kickstarter projects in the past. They have provided extensive quotes and details about the publishing options, in terms of quantities and specifications. The fulfilment company I am working with have given me detailed information regarding shipping rates and costs for worldwide shipping of the books and lithographs, they work extensively with Kickstarter project distribution. In terms of timescale, I have much of the artwork and poetry completed, it is only a matter of creating the pages and design of the book ready for printing. Having worked in publishing for some time I am used to meeting deadlines, and will do my upmost to deliver your copies of Laylah on time. I will also be sure to keep you updated should any delays arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
