First of all, thank you for checking out our kickstarter. If you have not watched the video above, here is our story. We have been touring the country (and even canada and europe!) for roughly 4 years now and throughout those four years, have gone through four (yes FOUR) different vans, one of which was attained through the only other kickstarter campaign we have ever done.
Long story short, we have NEVER been able to purchase a reliable van, mostly because these vehicles are very expensive to buy new, or even somewhat new. Each van we purchased was from the 90's (due to financial constraints) and eventually broke down, causing us to put in thousands of dollars of personal money to fix, and to be honest, we just can not do it anymore. Our last van completely broke down, and it would have costed us WAY more money that it was actually worth to fix. It would not even pass smog here in California. We are tired of breaking down, canceling shows, and declining tours due to this specific issue.
That being said, we are going to start fresh, take the plunge, and finance a van that was made in the last few years. We are not asking you guys to pay for the entire thing as that could potentially cost upwards of $15,000. We are asking our fans to help us make a significant down payment for this van, which we will use to finance at an extremely low rate. If the money is raised, we will make the down payment, and then the four of us in the band will finance the van at a low rate and will continue to make small monthly payments for the next 3-5 years until it is payed off.
Our goal is $6,500, which after kickstarter, amazon, and government taxes, will actually amount to roughly $5,000. Though this is our goal, as most kickstarters promote, any extra money will go straight to the financing of this van.
We have a new record coming out in early 2013 on Tooth and Nail Records, and if we can set ourselves up with a reliable vehicle, we will be able to hit the road and come melt all your faces.
Thank you for reading through this.
-The guys in I Am Empire
Van #1's transmission completely blew out in Topeka, Kansas in 2009. ($2500 of personal money)
Josh flew out to Minnesota to purchase van #2 from friends band. It didn't even make it to California before the complete underside of the van came loose. Midwest weather absolutely destroys vehicles. We had a tour so we paid the cost to fix what broke (roughly $2000), started the tour, and when we went through Minnesota (roughly 6 days later) we returned the van.
Once we returned van #2, we purchased van #3 (once again in Minnesota). We didn't want to, but had no other choice. We bought the van from a pastor, started driving to Pennsylvania, an the radiator exploded ($1000 fix). Unfortunately we didn't make it to the festival as we were stranded in Minnesota for a week. We finished the tour and used van #3 for about one year. After about $5000 spent on repairs for that van, and countless failed smog tests, we sold the van to another band.
We had van #4 donated to us, so before we set out on a tour, we had it checked out to make sure it was tour ready. Unfortunately, it would have cost us around $3000 to get it fixed the first time. We decided it would be better to invest in a new van then continue to fix old 90's vans. and here we are.
