Winner of multiple international design awards
Roast on-demand for the best cup of coffee you’ve ever tasted, with bright vibrant flavors.
Kelvin is the best way to guarantee your coffee is always fresh. Its efficient roast cycle delivers roasted coffee in less than 10 minutes, allowing you to discover the incredible taste of freshly roasted coffee, whenever you want it.
Try new types of beans, styles, and intensities of roasts. And blend them.
Kelvin is the first home coffee roasting system that also provides a curated selection of green coffee beans delivered straight to you. By putting the entire process into your hands, you have the control and range to experiment with multiple bean origins, roasting times, blends, and flavors to experience a new side of coffee from first crack to French roast.
Unroasted beans are often half the price of craft roasted beans. Unroasted beans also stay fresh for months, while roasted coffee can lose its flavor in days. No more trashing stale beans. No more wasting money.
With Kelvin, fresh green beans are brought directly to you, without the costs of professional roasting and handling. This leads to significant savings that helps Kelvin pay for itself in less than a year.
Kelvin is for everybody; designed for the first-time explorer to the seasoned do-it-yourself coffee aficionado. It's now easy for everyone to experiment and discover the amazing complexity of craft coffee with set-and-go, perfectly roasted beans at any time of the day.
Roast with confidence —We’ve engineered Kelvin to roast and bring out the best quality from any raw coffee beans, using a vortex-drive bottom-up air roasting technique that will lead to a more even roast — so your cup is delicious no matter how you brew.
Roast for a pot, or just a cup —The ideal batch size for Kelvin is 100-120g of green coffee beans— enough to brew about 4-6 cups of coffee— so you can roast just enough for your morning pour over or for a whole pot. This flexibility enables you to make fresh coffee for any occasion, and all in under 10 minutes.
Unlimited outcomes — Set the roasting time by simply turning the control knob, push to start, and Kelvin does the rest. You can also add or remove time mid-roast, to make it easier to personalize your flavor. Combine different beans from around the world with varying roasting times, and the flavor possibilities are endless.
When the roasting cycle is finished, Kelvin automatically cools the beans to ensure they’re ready to store or grind.
Roasting to different levels allows for coffee beans to express different qualities, based on how lightly or darkly they’re roasted. It’s easy to uncover each variety’s range of flavors by experimenting with small batches.
Simple cleanup —Collecting chaff is no hassle with Kelvin’s built in filter. It easily slips into the roasting chamber, capturing chaff efficiently and in one place. Bonus—you can even compost chaff for an eco-friendly cleanup.
Cool under pressure — We've developed a double-walled housing that keeps the exterior glass cool while the beans are roasting. The 360 degree view of the glass roasting chamber allows you to keep an eye on your roast to make it perfectly to your taste, while the process unfolds right in front of you.
The Kelvin experience provides the freshest beans, always available and delivered to your doorstep.
In addition to developing the award-winning Kelvin product, our team has been working with some amazing partners to source the best unroasted beans from around the world. Unroasted coffee beans (or green beans) are shelf stable for months, compared to prepackaged roasted coffee which can start losing its flavor within hours once opened.
To provide you with an unparalleled home roasting experience, we're also building a subscription service and mobile app that allows you to choose your beans from all over the world, with our suggestions for different roasts. That way, you can explore and enjoy a range of flavors each time you roast.
Reward levels — All of this comes together to form the Kelvin Home Coffee Roasting ecosystem and is available now, for the first time ever, on Kickstarter at the following pledge levels, OVER 30% OFF FUTURE RETAIL:
Ready for Launch
Our progress —To develop Kelvin, we followed a rigorous user centered design & engineering process. We started with a deep dive into the user experience of home coffee roasting and preparation to uncover insights around pain points of the process. This informed an iterative round of form and user interface testing to arrive at the ideal experience and the final design for Kelvin.
Making it real —To uncover the best technique for air roasted coffee, we dove into the process firsthand, roasting tons of coffee in different ways, meticulously cataloguing the results to gain insights about time and heat. We continued the technical and engineering development of Kelvin by building more prototypes, roasting a ton of coffee, and dialing in on the details of the Kelvin system.
We're now working with our manufacturing partners on finalizing the design for manufacturing details, and are ready to kickoff tooling and production as soon as our campaign is funded.
Product details — Kelvin will be UL certified for product safety, and here are in-depth product details:
Project timeline — We are already collaborating with manufacturers and green bean partners around the world. Here is a breakdown of monthly milestones, leading up to production launch & shipping the first units to backers:
In 2017, we launched a successful campaign for the Humanscale Manual Reissue—an iconic piece of design history that helps product designers bring their ideas to life. We took a page from that book (literally), to create a product that we’re passionate about. We’re really excited to return to Kickstarter to launch Kelvin.
Our team is made up of researchers, designers, engineers and business strategists—people who have collectively applied their decades of experience to the Kelvin project to make it beautiful, make it technically feasible, and make it a viable business opportunity so we can deliver a quality product to you, our backers.
Luke has been designing and developing products for over 15 years, ranging from medical devices to kitchen appliances. He leads the design engineering practice at IA Collaborative and leverages deep knowledge of technical fundamentals with a strong human-centered approach to create breakthrough solutions to solve real user problems. An avid coffee drinker since the birth of his first child, he looks forward to sharing Kelvin with the world.
Dan Kraemer is a Founder of the global design and innovation consultancy, IA Collaborative, and creator of IA’s ventures program. As a connoisseur of both culinary equipment and experiences, he wanted to create Kelvin in a beautiful form that would earn its place on your countertop.
IA is a global design and innovation consultancy. At the forefront of user-centered design that creates business value, we live and work at the intersection of design and business; of creativity and strategy. Combining human-centered design and strategic business consulting, we help multinational organizations and emerging leaders set visions, create strategies, design compelling experiences and empower their own cultures of innovation. We reframe problems, uncover opportunities and set a strategic vision. From Insight to Action, we define business models—profit, process, channel, brand and partnership strategies—and create new physical and digital products, brands, services and environments.
IA Collaborative Ventures
At IA Collaborative, we spend our days helping clients envision, design and bring to market what’s next for their business, so it is no surprise that we have a few ideas of our own. IA Collaborative Ventures, a sister company to IA Collaborative, functions as an “in-house incubator” that enables entrepreneurial employees to collaborate, create, and pitch their own ideas. Passion projects are given time, resources, and initial funding to move past the idea stage to design and prototyping, at which point outside partnerships, investors, or alternative funding methods are explored to reach full commercialization.
Coffee is a ritual that is rooted in community. We meet over coffee, share stories over coffee, and drink a lot of coffee while we’re designing products. From our last campaign for the Humanscale Reissue, we saw the power of community on Kickstarter—through new connections, friendships and helpful suggestions. We think the Kickstarter community will appreciate the beauty of Kelvin, the quality of the coffee it produces, as well as the passion we’ve poured into making it real.
Risks and challenges
As professional product designers, we have decades of combined production and fulfillment experience. With IA Collaborative Ventures behind us, we truly do not anticipate any major hiccups or delays. We have already aligned with manufacturing partners and have developed the product through many rounds of prototypes and testing to ensure that it is ready for production once our campaign is funded.
Of course, unforeseen complications and delays are always possible. For this reason, the specs and estimated delivery dates listed on this Kickstarter campaign are subject to potential change. If these occur, we will be transparent about it and keep you updated along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
