iStick allows you to easily, quickly and safely move data between computers, iPhones, iPads and iPod touches without the need for Internet, wireless networks or the Cloud where hackers and others (e.g. 3rd party server operators) may gain access.
iStick is a USB flash drive with a difference
We all have used a USB flash drive at least once in our lives. They are great for transferring large files between computers, require minimal setup and the transfer speed is much faster than the fastest Cloud storage. It doesn't require the Internet to work and your data is never sent through 3rd party servers. The USB flash drive is great but it doesn't work with your favorite Apple iDevices. Until now.
iStick. World's 1st USB drive with integrated Apple approved Lightning connector
Just slide the switch on the iStick to switch the USB connector to an Apple approved Lightning connector.
WORKS WITH iPHONE, iPAD AND iPOD TOUCH
iStick turns from an ordinary USB flash drive to a flash drive that is Apple MFi certified to work with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
You can transfer music from the computer to an iPod touch or playback directly from the iStick. No need for lengthy synchronization or pay for streaming services.
Free up space on your iPhone by backing up all your photos, videos and files to the high capacity iStick. No need to pay for recurring online Cloud storage subscription.
Stream tons of movies directly from the iStick onto your iPad, anytime and anywhere you want, even on planes. No Internet or wireless network required. The iStick app features a hardware accelerated video decoder that supports a wide variety of non-iOS native video formats like MP4, M4V, MPV, MOV, MPG, MKV, AVI, WMV, RMVB, FLV, 3GP, GIF.
iStick is safe and secure since no data is sent through 3rd party services or transferred through the Internet or Cloud where hackers and others (like server operators) may gain access.
iStick is always by your side, safe and secure, whenever you need it, even when there is no Internet. iStick works with both Mac and PC as well as all types of files.

WHO ARE WE?
HYPER by Sanho Corporation has been making storage products since 2002 and iDevice accessories since 2009. We have been awarded the prestigious CES Design & Engineering Honors by the Consumer Electronic Association not once but twice, both for storage products. This is our 2nd Kickstarter project. Our first Kickstarter project, CloudFTP, also a storage product, was the 3rd highest funded Kickstarter technology project when funding ended and named by Stuff Magazine as one of the “10 best Kickstarter technology projects”. We are also the technology provider for another successful Kickstarter project called CameraMator.
Daniel Chin is the Founder of Sanho Corporation. An electrical engineer by training, Daniel has a hand in all of Sanho's products which include: HyperDrive – Portable digital data storage products for Apple devices, digital cameras, memory cards HyperJuice – External batteries for Apple MacBook, iPhone, iPad, iPod, USB products HyperShield – Cases and stylus pens for Apple devices HyperThin – World thinnest HDMI cables HyperShop – Official Online store A serial entrepreneur, Daniel also founded another company EastGear.com in Singapore, where he was born, He came over to the U.S. in 2005 and currently resides in San Francisco Bay Area, California with his wife and 2 young kids.
Valerie Chong is the COO of Sanho Corporation. An mechanical engineer by training, Valerie oversees production and operations of the company.
Prototype A: How nice would it be to be able to simply connect a USB flash drive into the iPhone or iPad to transfer data without going through iTunes, the computer or the Internet? That was how the idea for iStick was born, back in 2011. The first prototype was rather rudimentary. It was basically sticking a 30-pin connector (the original iPhone/iPad connector) at the other end of a USB stick. It was promptly rejected by Apple because the design was ambiguous as there is a possibility that the user might use the product like a cable and connect both ends at the same time, giving unpredictable results.
Prototype B: A sliding switch was added to the design to allow only one connector (either USB or 30-pin) to be exposed at any time, preventing wrong usage. Certification with Apple would continue for 2 more years.
Prototype C: The old 30-pin connector is replaced with the new Lightning connector to become the current design and we finally obtain Apple MFi certification for the iStick in 2014.
Risks and challenges
No project is without their risk and challenges but we try to do our absolute best to minimize them. We felt that we have done all the necessary preliminary work prior to coming to Kickstarter. We are also no strangers to Apple accessories, storage products or even Kickstarter.
We have been working on the iStick for about 3 years and have since built many stable prototypes and a fully functional universal iOS app. We recently just got Apple's approval to use the Lightning connector on this product and to list the iStick app on the Apple App Store. The iStick is now MFi certified to work with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
The iStick that you see in the above videos are real, working prototypes with an actual fully functional iOS app.
With your support, we can bring iStick to iDevice users worldwide. We are ready to enter mass production and your contribution will help to fund:
- Mass production tooling
- Large component order
We are confident of meeting (if not beating) our August 2014 ship date. Our previous "CloudFTP" Kickstarter project was featured by CNN Money as one of the few Kickstarter projects that actually ship on time.
We have sufficient components to manufacture about 10,000 units now. Beyond that, we may face long lead times especially for the components related to the Apple Lightning connector. Your strong support will give us the needed affirmation to place a larger component order and start mass production earlier.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We will provide an extension cable to connect the iStick to an encased iPhone, iPad or iPod touch?
We will provide something similar to this:
How do you verify if I have Facebook Share or Tweet about the project (to qualify for free upgrade from black/white iStick to silver aluminum iStick)
You can post a screenshot of your "Facebook Share" to our facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/hypermac) or add @hyper to the end of your tweet. Remember to also include your Kickstarter name.
Yes. iStick requires a free universal iPhone/iPad/iPod touch app that will be available from the Apple App Store. We are also working with 3rd party app developers to have our iStick work on their apps as well.
Unfortunately the Apple MFi program does not allow usage of removable memory.
We did thought of that but having a third, middle position would result in device that is 9mm longer which feels unwieldy when connected to an iPhone. Both the USB and Lightning connectors are actually quite sturdy, made of non-corrosive materials and can withstand quite a bit of abuse. If anything breaks, it's covered under our limited 1 year warranty. To protect the iStick, we will be providing a case similar to this: http://www.caselogic.com/en-us/us/products/portable-electronics-cases/usb-cases/usb-flash-drive-case-_-usb_-_201_-_black
The iStick solution that we submitted for Apple MFi approval a while back is based on USB 2.0 architecture. We wished implementing USB 3.0 was as easy as changing out a part in the iStick as we would have done it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately it involves redesigning the whole thing which would not be feasible for within the timeframe of this project.
Kickstarter no longer allows multiple units to be bundled in a single reward. Message us and we can figure something out.
Alternatively you can use different emails to create different Kickstarter accounts to place multiple rewards.
The universal iOS app is already ready but we are still making a few more improvements and running some tests before releasing to the public.
You can watch the video above to see how the app works.
Unfortunately Apple does not allow iOS apps to be stored or run on anywhere but on the iPhone/iPad/iPod touch itself.
Will the video playback work on iPhones? Or just iPads? Are all the functionalities identical for all iOS devices (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch)?
Yes you can playback video and all the functionalities described above apply to all iOS devices (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch).
Yes it does.
Undoubtedly we will always invite this type of comparison because of the way we market the iStick as a USB flash drive for the iPhone and iPad. While the iStick does resembles and function like a USB flash drive, that is where the similarities end. Every part of the iStick is designed for the purpose of connecting to iOS Devices which by design, do not connect to ordinary "run of the mill" flash drives.
The first additional cost that iStick has that ordinary USB flash drives do not is the Apple Lightning connector which together with the Apple Lightning authentication chip cost upwards of $10, which is a significant manufacturing cost. Secondly, the iStick, like ordinary USB flash drives, has no power source of its own, so it has to draw its power from the iPhone or iPad that it connects to. Because of that, iStick has to conform to strict low power consumption requirements (high speed active mode <90mA, low power mode <10mA) set out by Apple MFi regulations. As a result, every component in the iStick is a low power consumption variant which cost significantly more than normal non low power consumption components. For example only 10% of the flash memory in the market meet this low power consumption process requirement (19nm) and there is a premium on the price for this feature. The MCU computer chip in addition to being low power consumption also requires 10 times more RAM than what is typically found in other MCU, in order to meet iOS data transfer requirement. This unique MCU design has to be specially fabricated which calls for a huge upfront investment. We also have to factor in 2 years of R&D and development of software found in the physical iStick as well as the iStick app.
In summary, the relatively higher cost of the iStick (compared to ordinary USB flash drive) is due to the usage of Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector and other additional high specification components over and beyond what is used in ordinary USB flash drives as well as other cost related to MFi certification and software/app development. We are NOT charging a higher price to take advantage of the fact that we are the only ones with such a product in the market.
