Product Update #1: Reversible HyperDrive & New White LED Activity Indicator

From the private messages and comments posted by backers here, we gather that some of you are not aware that HyperDrive (like the Thunderbolt 3 USB-C connectors themselves) are reversible and you can actually use the HyperDrive on either side of the 2016 MacBook Pro with Touchbar (sorry non-Touchbar 2016 MacBook Pro users, you only have 2 x Thunderbolt 3 USB ports on the left side only)

The problem was the blue LED activity indicator light was only visible on one side of the HyperDrive.

The solution is to move the LED activity indicator light to the bottom of the HyperDrive so that it is visible from either orientation. We have also made the LED activity indicator larger and changed the LED activity indicator color from blue to white, to be consistent with the white LED backlit keyboard.

We hope you like this.

P.S. Don't worry about the HyperDrive colors not matching the MacBook Pro. We were just experimenting with different shades of color. The final HyperDrive will match the Silver and Space Gray colors of the MacBook Pro.

I like the new placement and the change to the strip instead of the dot. Good move.

Like the new placement. Would love to see it turn orange when the MacBook is charging, or at least indicate in some way to bring back the orange/green indicators on the magsafe charger that are now lost.

Please change it back to blue light, as this is much easier on the eyes, actually even better then red for sleeping, as red is an alarming color. I do like the new position though.

Nothing a little electrical tape won't solve!

Just want to clarify that our objective is to make the indicator light subtle so it would not be blinking non stop and it would not be a distraction in dark environments.

By 'Activity Indicator', will the LED be blinking non stop?

      Hi,

Would be possible to add a Thunderbolt 2 port? For Apple Display and Blackmagic devices.

Would it be possible to make the indicator in the same fashion as the sleep indicator on older MBPs, that is by drilling into, but not all the way through the aluminum, so that the indicator is only visible when on?

I think the repositioning of the indicator, and changing the color to white is a good move, I would however have preferred that you kept it as a small dot.

    12. Pattrawoot on

Agree with Thomas. I vote for a Dot LED instead of Strip one.

Would it be possible to make the LED indicator "breathe" like the old MBPs used to do? (When in Sleep mode) Cause that would be so nice.

How about tying the LED brightness into the configured keyboard backlighting setting?

We cannot speak for other brands but the tested operating temperature of this HyperDrive is 48ºC / 118ºF

After the campaign ends on January 16, 2017, we will send out a survey to collect color and shipping information.

I'd rather not have an LED. It's a real distraction in dark environments and draws attention.

    18. Matt Lang on

Please don't make the LED that big. It should just be a "sanity check" to make sure the adapter works. It shouldn't be a constant reminder that it is there.

Keep it low power and non-intrusive. Can it be placed near the USB C ports on the outside edge of the device? That way we don't have to constantly see a little LED while we're using the MacBook...

Hope it hope get over heated while charging through the adapter, as I saw many over heating complaints from satechi users

For that purpose, you mat need two LEDs for both ends.

I didn't see an area to select Space gray vs. Silver when I pledged.... Is there a way to chose?

      Great changes!!!
Now I am curious, to a photography-single minded, if it's possible to offer UHS-II transfer speed for the SD and microSD ports, instead of the 'old' UHS-I.
      What you think?

    24. Filip Trönnberg on

Why would I want a LED light? Isn't it always on when plugged in?

    25. HYPER by Sanho Corporation 8-time creator on

      @Thomas
Yes LED brightness was one of top consideration. We will test further in dark environments to make sure that it would not be distracting.

It's looks awesome, keep on the good work

Do note that the 2016 MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar only has full Thunderbolt 3 performance on the left side.

So, while the MBP 2016 13-inch Touch Bar model can use the HyperDrive hub on the either side, it will be better to use it on the left-hand ports.

      Quoting from here: https://support.apple.com/en-sg/HT207256

Late-2016 MacBook Pro models vary slightly in the data speeds they provide to each Thunderbolt 3 port.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016) delivers full Thunderbolt 3 performance on all four ports.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) supports Thunderbolt 3 at full performance using the two left-hand ports. The two right-hand ports deliver Thunderbolt 3 functionality, but have reduced PCI Express bandwidth. [This refers to the Touch Bar 13-inch.]

Always plug higher-performance devices into the left-hand ports on MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) for maximum data throughput.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports) delivers full Thunderbolt 3 performance on both ports. [This refers to the non-Touch Bar 13-inch.]

      Thomas on

Looking good, guys! The LED positioning is great, but could you run a survey to choose between a Strip (in your current update) or just a Dot (in the launch image) for the LED?
I anticipate that in a darken environment (eg. on flights), that light may NOT need to be that bright (since it is already FRONT-facing). It may be just me, but an early survey might help.
      Please consider, thanks.

      Great solution for the light!

Now all I need is an ethernet (RJ45) port. We use hard wired in a secure environment, which means I cannot get totally away from using at least one dongle.

Good approach!! I like the light!!

    31. Chad Johnson on

      I cant wait!!

I would like to toss out a collaborative idea. Make a pro-version with an added M.2 SSD enclosure. You can offer the drive already installed and charge by storage or sell a BYOD version (no drive).

Alternatively, same form factor, no/fewer ports, drive only.

    32. Fermin Sanchez on

Brilliant! I was going to make a suggestion about the light if the HyperDrive was attached on the right side. But you've got that covered :-)

    33. Mike Gomez on

Perfect!!!!!! Looking forward to this a lot!!!!
