About this project
Once upon a time, there was this kid...
Hyper Heroes is the story of a normal kid struggling with high school grades, social typecasting, bully attacks, unrequited love — and the fact that his four best friends have suddenly acquired hyperpowers.
You can read the comic HERE!
What's the project about?
I'm JC Alvarez. I've been making superhero comics since I was about 6 years old.
Hyper Heroes is my oldest, dearest and most enduring project. It's a light-hearted, all-ages (but thoughtful) superhero comic. It has teen hijinks, good-natured comedy and the occasional superhero fight. That's basically it.
It started as a school hobby, where it gathered a huge cult following of about 9 people... But hey, they were the story’s protagonists. Because that’s the point of hyper heroes: the reader is the protagonist!
And we don’t mean it in a “characters the kids can identify with” way. We’re literally saying our readers are the characters. As in, we take your (or your kid's or your loved ones') face and mannerisms and put them in a comic book hero, and we give the character skills and special powers based on your real-life strengths and qualities. And yes, that character then has a starring role in a superhero story.
I’ve done this for 30 years, first as a childhood hobby, then as an artist for kid’s books and animated films; now i want to indulge myself again, and to tell kids to indulge their own strengths, their own skills, their own stories.
You can already see the ongoing comic at our website; but we are looking for support to make it into a print comic! Yes, and ongoing print comic with a rotating cast of you, you and you (and featuring… you)!
However, the mainstream comic book industry has very little space for new projects, particularly new superhero projects, as most of the market is taken up by the Big Names. Conversely, the indie comics scene tends to look away from light-hearted, non-satiric superhero stories. In this scenario, placing Hyper Heroes in the market seemed, at the very least, like a challenge. So, we turned to Kickstarter. We thought it would let our project find its own audience, as it has done for so many other comics projects in the past. After all, if you've read this far, you MIGHT be part of that audience!
If we achieve the funding goal, we'll use the money to produce all the rewards, cards and posters and — more importantly — finish and print the first two chapters of Hyper Heroes. We are already finished with chapter 1, which we plan to publish as a single 56-page volume. You can see how the art looks now, and it's only getting better. But we need you to make it real.
So, the rewards...
Hyper Heroes is a comic book, so we'll give comics. Pledges $50 and above get a printed version of the first two Hyper Heroes volumes:
Other pledges will get various levels of fan kits, including art prints, art commissions or exclusive, customized trading cards!
And last but not least, Hyper Heroes has always been about real people.
The first comics starred my elementary school friends, and the roster kept changing as the real people in my life kept coming and going.
This time, the main characters in the story will be you. This means whoever helps me kick this project off, gets to SOMEHOW become part of the Hyper Heroes universe; in fact, some of you WILL join the main cast of the ongoing series and become immortalized as hyper heroes forever!
...Because, after all, that's what the series is about.
Starring roles will of course be limited, but we’ll also include our readers in speaking cameos, background action shots and all the intermediate categories we can think of. And we also intend to put up an illustrated list in our website (like a yearbook if you will) showcasing the reader characters that don’t make the cut into the story, with their own codenames, “real” names (optional), character profiles, hyperpowers and hypersuits!
The storylines in the first volume establish the hyper heroes setting, and the main conflicts and antagonists of the series; however, future storylines will revolve mainly around those characters that make the final cut. That’s how I made the first hyper heroes comics, after all.
How does that sound so far? Want in?
If you do, please join us, help us produce this, and become a part of the Hyper Heroes project... both inside the comic AND in real life!
Risks and challenges
Currently we lack the resources to continue producing the comic beyond this first chapter; we need funding to produce our stuff, as well as to write the next chapter.
Our main challenge is shipping logistics; we expect pledges from several different countries, with varying package sizes, so we're setting up a team to focus on this task alone. We´re trying to find the best possible distributors so if we (hopefully) get a high demand for printed stuff, we can send everyone their rewards smoothly and on time.
Other than that, we'll have to focus on printing and design, which we'll fund directly from what we can raise here.
We believe in our work's ability to sustain itself after that first hurdle... but we need a little help for that. So, here we are!
