Amaranth Squares: Healthy & Delicious!
Are you looking for a nutritious whole-grain snack that actually tastes good? Replace your mediocre granola bar with amaranth-based Ananda Squares! They are naturally gluten-free, organic, non-GMO, vegetarian, vegan and most important of all...HEALTHY & DELICIOUS!
While in Mexico, we found a popular protein-rich snack that we couldn’t get enough of. We learned from the locals that they were made from amaranth. It turns out, amaranth was the “mother grain” of the ancient Aztecs and has been cultivated for at least 6,000 years! So we decided to one-up the Aztecs and created Ananda Squares. These snacks combine the best of both worlds - unbelievable proven nutrition and amazing flavor. Through rigorous cooking trials, we have found a way to preserve the nutrition and flavor of the amaranth grain without sacrificing the freshness of this superfood. Amaranth is one of the world’s most dynamic alternative grains - it’s rich in iron and amino acids and is naturally gluten free! The Whole Grains Council touts amaranth as a “protein powerhouse.” It’s time North America stops missing out, so we are bringing the best of the amaranth market to you. But we’re not stopping there, we are playing with different flavor combinations and iterations involving quinoa - another supergrain - which we will be introducing shortly.

Cool Amaranth Facts!
Amaranth seed is a member of the Chenopodiaceae family of plants (related to quinoa, beets, and spinach), but when popped, it tastes like a cereal. This means that it's more related to a vegetable than a cereal grain! Loaded with calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, B vitamins, lunasin, oleic acid, manganese, lysine, iron, rutin, nicotiflorin, and more. It's a nutritional all-star! It’s also the only grain documented to have naturally occurring vitamin C.
That's right, they're not bars - they're 3.5" x 3.5" squares. Why?, you ask. Well, because our nutritional all-star grains get exponentially compounded with yummy ingredients and... you've got it: it's joy squared. Yumminess squared. Protein squared. Everything squared. We're downright obsessed with making sure that our recipes don't just bring out the natural goodness of the amaranth or other ingredients, but that it's goodness squared. Ok ok ok, enough squared-mindedness and onto the available flavors. Note that all of the pictures shown here are actual pictures of our squares, taken right after those batches were made in our commercial kitchen in Austin, TX. Later on you'll find the package mock-ups that you'll actually see when you get your squares delivered directly to your house.
- Natural Flavor: Imagine having a delicious combination of our nutritional all-star popped amaranth mixed with agave nectar, a dash of lemon juice, joyful vibes and good karma. Bam!
- Dark Chocolate: We take our natural square and drizzle it artistically with some seriously good dark chocolate (65% cacao), joyful vibes and good karma. Plant-based protein power + antioxidants + best-tasting chocolate ever! Bam^2!
- Nuts and Berries: We take our natural square and top it with a mixture of goji berries, blueberries, sour cherries and almonds. Berry good nuts for protein tasting awesomeness! 2Bam^2!
Future (still in production/ if we reach our stretch goals) flavors.
Amaranth Dark: Whoa!!!! These squares will be made with chocolate lovers in mind. Instead of drizzling the dark chocolate onto the natural square, we will mix the popped amaranth with large quantities of sumptuous dark chocolate goodness and add our joyful vibes and good karma. The square will look much darker, hence the name. Plant-based protein + dark delight.
- Amaranth Dark Peanut butter cup: Oooooooooh, what if we took our Amaranth Dark square and added an all natural organic peanut butter drizzle? (Yea, it's crazy good)
- Amaranth Dark and Hazelnut: Nutella-like flavored amaranth, need we say more?
- Amaranth Dark and Cherries: Because sometimes a little tartness goes very well with chocolatey delight!
- Amaranth Apricot and Almonds: Oh yes! If you think back to the Natural square and mix in some apricots and raw almonds you'll get a sweet variety with an even healthier kick!
If we reach past this stretch goal, we are working on expanding our Ananda Squares to also include popped QUINOA squares. Now most of you have seen quinoa used as a replacement for pasta or rice as another near-perfect protein source alternative grain. You've probably seen the normal colored quinoa, the red iteration, some of you might have even seen the black quinoa. We're also pretty confident you've seen it served warm or cold in some sort of salad form. Now what you might not have seen yet is POPPED QUINOA. Like its sister seed Amaranth, quinoa can be popped and used in Ananda-square form. This line of Ananda squares is something we are VERY excited about and cannot wait to share it with you. True to form, the following would be the available flavors:
- Quinoa Dark.
- Quinoa Natural.
- Quinoa Nuts and Berries.
- Quinoa Dark Peanut Butter Cup.
- Quinoa Dark and Hazelnut.
Note: Every above-mentioned flavor of Ananda Squares' recipe has already been tried, tested and perfected. However, in order to provide you with all the sweet sweet goodness listed above, we need more support to convince our co-packer friends to do these additional product runs.
If you've already tried Amaranth, you already know what it tastes like, and you know how awesome it is. But if you haven't, let us explain it to you. Popped Amaranth is like a teeny tiny piece of popcorn, with a bit more of a nutty taste, but without that annoying bits that get stuck in your teeth. Just like popcorn, you can flavor amaranth, which we do in our squares. It's just like popcorn at the movies, you know you should only have a handful, but you can't seem to keep your hand out of that bag. But there’s no guilt, greasy fingers or unhappy belly afterward. Trust us, this stuff tastes great! And it's not just us who think so - we've taste tested at farmers markets and people LOVE Ananda Squares! So we're all good on our recipes now, and we just need to get some super awesome Kickstarter folks (gluten-free lovers, health-savvy folks, hungry vegans and vegetarians too) around the world to share our love of The Square. So if you, dear super awesome Kickstarter guru, of whom the whole world revolves and karma shines upon minute by minute, have interest in a great-tasting, healthy snack that you can give your kids guilt free (or, if you have no kids...your significant other, elderly parents, yogi girlfriend, etc.), please, please, pretty please, with super-sweet amaranth covered goodness sprinkled on top...support our project so we can give America a new option in health food snacks that actually taste delicious! You know you wanna... right?
Risks and challenges
We've worked very hard to tackle any potential obstacles in fulfilling our pledges to you. Our main commitment on this project is to hold up our end of the bargain with our supporters. To ensure this we have done extensive R&D on our recipes, organized chains of suppliers for our ingredients (with back ups), lined up multiple co-packers (in different states) with very large production capabilities.
That is to say, although we do not anticipate any delays, we've even padded our delivery times just to be safe, there is always the possibility of having unforeseeable errors. We promise, however, to be completely transparent with our supporters if these arise and notify them of estimated delivery times.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
