We introduce Buzzard, U.S-Inspired multi-tool EDC neck knife by Hydra Knives.
Buzzard is made of premium quality materials. Its stunning design is inspired in the U.S. Tactical knives; Buzzard combines the perfect proportions of an EDC knife with different tools such as a screwdriver or a wrench.
Buzzard's design is inspired on the EDC trend from the U.S.A. We tried to stay loyal to that tactical-like design but always focused in the functionality of all the elements that compose Buzzard.
Buzzard has been made inspired on the current EDC-Be prepared tendencies, for those who like to travel swiftly and still ready for everything.
The result is an elegant and light-handed knife with more functionalities than a regular knife, keeping the balance between a good blade and the tools you may need on your every day.
Buzzard's design is inspired U.S.-inspired but entirely made in Europe. We have tried to combine the designs and the way of making stunning products from the U.S. with the traditional knives from Spain. The result speaks by itself.
We are knife makers, but more than that, we are EDC (Everyday Carry) addicts. We have noticed that many of the knives that are considered EDC are just small knives. Nevertheless, Buzzard has been designed to contain a few tools inside the handle: an interchangeable screwdriver that can be adapted to any situation just by changing the bit key; and a wrench made with m6, m5, m3 sizes.
Buzzard’s sheath is fully customizable; do you want to carry buzzard on your neck? Do you prefer to carry it on your belt? Are you a right or left user? We have tried to cover every possibility so Buzzard will be always with you
Buzzard has been made having in mind those who want to carry a safe tool in any situation
Buzzard’s secret resides on its design: a blade that allows the user to do precise and straight cuts; a seax point and an ergonomic handle that adapts to the user’s hand. Its ergonomic handle is the icing on the cake; this ergonomic handle ends on a safety ring that allows the user to ensure a firm grip while projecting more strength.
Buzzard is our little tiny beast; it has been created to survive to your everyday life: from opening a box, unscrew the wheels of your bike, litting fire, or cutting wood. Do not be fooled by Buzzard size, it may look little, yet It is a knife to endure like a honey badger.
Buzzards are one the smallest birds of prey, they can be found everywhere (depending on where you live they are called “hawks, vulture, etc.”). Since names such as “hawk, eagle, vulture” are being used by almost every knife maker in the world we decided to name our child as “buzzard” but, why?
Buzzards are well-known for their speed, small size, quickness, efficacy and majesty. They can be found worldwide, even in places where humans cannot reach and they have that badass look.
If pigeons would be civilians, buzzards would be Commandos!
We tried to reflect that ultimate survival spirit in our knife, Buzzards are adapted to almost every environment. At the beginning Buzzard was a curve knife. But we decided to modify it with this hunter-like straight lines. Buzzard is an EDC knife made to endure even the hardest tasks.
In order to do so, Buzzard has been made on 5 mm 1.4116 steel, we do not like sleak blades. In addition, Buzzard has some tools inside its structure such as a screwdriver , a wrench, a safety ring; thumbs serrations to reach the maximum potential to Buzzard, and a firesteel nick. Everything packed up with a great kydex® sheath and other accessories.
Many knives companies just launch a new design to the market without testing them, they just have an idea and make it real, that is good. However, sending your new knife to experts to test it is GREAT!
Buzzard has been tested for more than 30 different people, from survival to Bushcraft experts, from Russia to Canada, many different reviewers have tested buzzard and shared their impressions.
It has been even tested by members from different security forces and emergency services. Their feedback was that Buzzard is an awesome knife that can be carried by everyone.
For more information about the reviewers check out our updates and FAQ.
BUZZARD TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
- Overall lenght: 17 cm (6,69")
- Blade lenght: 8, cm (3,35")
- Edge lenght: 7,5 cm (2,95")
- Handle lenght: 8,5 cm (3,35")
- Steel width: 5 mm (0,19")
1. Firesteel nick: Feel like a dragon and make a fire quick using the nick located on the upper side of the spine, by the end of the blade. This spot has not been grinded to ease the use of a fire steel or a fire rod.
2. Thumb serrations on the blade helps while cutting with more precision and safely using Buzzard.
3. Thumb serrations on the blade secures the grip, especially when carrying it or using the safety ring. It also helps users with screwing or unscrewing with both tools.
4. The safety ring is meant to secure a firm grip, It also eases the extraction. It can be used to smash things (like a glass in case of emergency or a coconut) and make possible to hold Buzzard with your whole hand while projecting more strength.
5. Wrench: Buzzard has been designed to be used on both, wild or urban environments for every user, I personally use it to screw and unscrew my bike wheels when they have loosen up. (For more instructions please read the section about using buzzard with the sheath)
6. Bit key hole: Your personal screwdriver, just replace one bit key for another and you will have your own personal screwdriver. We have included a Phillips® head, but you can replace it for a Torx®, Cross-head®, etc.
7. Seax point: We took the inspiration for our point from the Buzzard’s beak. To resemblance the birds of prey, we decided to make Buzzard with a seax point. It gives Buzzard this tactical overall shape as it helps the user with precise cutting.
8. Powder coating – Textured Powder coat: Powder coating make the knife frictionless, it is said that helps the user to extract a knife from different materials. It also protects your blade from corrosion so it helps it to endure corrosive environment such as a salt water. It also gives the blade this tactical look. Our coating is made of an epoxy base with polyester on it. Coatings are a classic on the knives industry by some brands like TOPS®, ESEE® or Fallkniven®
Buzzard is made of 1.4116 stainless steel (you may know it as X50CrMoV15 or 420MoV), a well-known steel among cutlery users.
Some of the top cutlery brands such as CRKT®, Cold Steel® or KA-BAR® make some of their great knives out of it. This steel is highly appreciate on kitchen knives as well, due to their exceptional corrosion resistant.
If we wanted to make Buzzard a user-friendly knife that would survive any situation, we could not think of a better steel. Since buzzard is meant to be used as an EDC tool by all users (experts or not) their properties make it the ideal steel for this purpose
1.4416 is perfect for beginner sharpeners, it is really tough yet flexible, it comes with an exceptional corrosion resistant, and even if it does not hold the edge that well you can get a razor in a couple of minutes with a bit of experience in sharpening.
Its high content in molybdenum and chromium gives this steel awesome corrosion resistance, it is considered as one of the most resilient stainless steel ever made. It also provides great mechanical hardness.
Because of this natural corrosion resistance, you can clean the surface of Buzzard just by washing it with a neutral soap and water, firstly rinsing Buzzard with water to remove completely the cleaning agent, and secondly drying the surface to preserve a good superficial condition.
The hardness of 1.4116 is between 55-57 HRc. Some users would say that the secret behind this steel is the heat treatment; with the appropriate heat treatment, you can get a lightsaber. This is the reason why the old Puma® knives made of 1.4116 steel are recognized by the users as top-notch knives.
To find the right balance between flexibility and edge retention Buzzard comes with a cryogenic treatment. This process enhances the steel properties, improving them and increasing a bit the edge holding.
Thanks to this cryogenic treatment, we can reach 58 HRc on Buzzard
Buzzard comes with no handle since even a simple G-10 scales would increase its weight quite a lot. If we wanted it to be an EDC knife, we would have to remove unnecessary parts. We removed the handles and rounded the edges, so that it grips smoothly on the handle.
You can string Buzzard’s handle (with the included paracord) or even a spearhead.
The key of Buzzard’s design resides in the safety ring. Everyone who tested Buzzard told us so; the safety ring secures a firm grip and allows you to use the knife with the entire hand. Moreover, it also helps you to use the tools inside of Buzzard when applying all the mighty power of your hand while cutting.
SHEATHS TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
- Sheath lenght: 11,8 cm (4,64")
- Sheath height : 5,3 cm (2,08")
- Max. sheath width: 0,9 cm (0,35")
Kydex® is a material born and made in the U.S; it is one of the best materials used in all-around sheaths. Kydex is a thermoplastic acrylic-polyvinyl chloride material. What does this mean?
It means our sheath combines the rigidity and formability from Acrylic with the toughness, chemical resistance and good interior finish ratings from PVC
Kydex® is the perfect material to any tactical sheath since it ensures the endurance in any environment and will last for generations. Furthermore, you can adjust how tight the sheath is just by heating it and molding it again. Kydex is waterproof, scratch resistant (Rockwell scale "R" hardness of 90) hold and its shape lasts forever, will not stretch or shrink under normal conditions and has lower friction than leather. What else can we ask for?
Kydex is used on kydex sheaths, seat backs, telescope tubes, autonomous marine vehicles, safety helmets and even on aircraft fairings.
Buzzard’s sheath comes with an extra hole on each side; these holes are meant to hold the bit key while the knife is sheathed. The point ends on a drainpipe to remove any fluids or excess of moisture.
The sheath comes with eight eyelets that ease stringing the sheath. These eyelets have been precisely designed to allow carrying in vertical and horizontal ways, whether using a TAC-CLIP® or not.
Finally, the sheath has been customized with our pattern and our logo engraved, it comes with a white liner that gives it that extra fancy touch.
To know more about the TAC-CLIP or the Paracord please check out our FAQ. (we have run out of space on our campaign, so we had to post it there)
Inspired in the actual and trendy designs from the U.S. Buzzard is a hybrid between a knife and different tools. On one hand, Buzzard has been made out of 1.446 steel of 5 mm thickness which comes with a hollow grind edge that ends shaping a seax point, helping the user with the cutting. On the other hand, Buzzard proportional measures have been studied meticulously to ease the handling, have a firm grip and moreso, using the tools with ease when needed.
We tested Buzzard for many hours, but the final test has been given by more than 30 random testers (that includes some of the best survival and Bushcraft youtubers in the world), who have given us their impressions.
Buzzard has been made with the collaboration of members from different security and forces of the Law, firefighter brigades and rescue and medical teams.
Members from different official security forces of the Law and firefighter brigades have tested Buzzard. They reviewed it and gave their feedback
Buzzard has been designed to be a useful EDC neck knife; we tried to give it as many tools as needed in a regular and a survival scenario.
Firstly, buzzard comes with a firesteel notch; this spot comes ungrinded so the firesteel rod will make sparks just by rubbing it.
There is something in making a fire that makes you feel like a shaman!
This fire notch is small and do not compromise any of the buzzard structure, you may not use it on a regular day, but you will be glad it is there in any camping day.
Buzzard also comes with a fixed wrench in its handle, what does this mean? It means it comes with of nuts: m6, m5 and m3.
These are the most common sizes of nuts, they are almost everywhere and if you pay a bit of attention you will find them in your bikes, cars, skateboards, etc.
This wrench tool comes along with the “hex" hole, you can put into it any hexagonal bit key. These keys are sold usually together and there are a lot of different sizes and heads. Buzzard comes with a Phillips® key, but you are free of replacing it with your favorite ones.
These tools can be used with ease thanks to the safety ring. The safety ring is designed to ensure a firm grip, easing the extraction and applying more force while using Buzzard. However, it shines when using the two most basic functions of buzzard: Cutting or unscrewing (with both tools).
The safety ring allows you to carry buzzard in many different positions, it also allows the user to carry it firmly with the whole hand since one of the fingers is inside the ring. It also minimizes the risk of being cut if Buzzard slips because hand and knife became one.
The two thumb serrations or jimping help you with fine and precise cuts, by also applying more strength when needed and usability of both different tools.
The icing on the cake is Buzzard’s sheath which takes all these uses to a new whole level. As we will see, Buzzard sheath has been designed to use these tools effectively, safely and quickly, with no risk for you at all
Buzzard only weights 79 grams. Here are the buzzard different weights depending on how you carry it:
- Buzzard knife only: 79 gr (2,78 Ounces)
- Buzzard sheath: 30,10 gr (1,06 Ounces)
- Buzzard sheath with Tac-Clip: 106 gr (3,74 Ounces)
- Buzzard sheath with belt loops: 41,60 gr (1,47 Ounces)
In addition, Buzzard can be carried on different positions: hanged on your neck, on your belt, on a molle system, on your bag, etc. Carry it on your left or your righ. The choice is yours, you may find ways to carry it beyond our imagination!
Buzzard has been designed to endure any of your everyday tasks, but obviously not to chop a tree down (some of our testers tried), but it becomes handy when you need a blade or a tool with you.
Since our testers come from different countries, they have granted Buzzard lots of different uses:
One of them used it as a tool to make an oven.
Meanwhile others preferred just to use it as a chef Knife.
Buzzard has been designed to be user-friendly and help you on your daily tasks, to be with you the whole time until you may need it, from opening a box to litting a fire, Buzzard will help you on these tasks and many more. ts uses are unlimited.
Buzzard steel 1.4116 is a more than decent stainless steel and makes buzzard perfect for those who want an all-rounder steel. It is flexible yet hard, it has a nice edge retention and more importantly: it can be easily sharpened again in minutes, ideal for those who likes to sharp the knives to their taste.
Just out of curiosity, Buzzard handle and sheath can be stringed with paracord (or any cord of your choice) to make a nice handle for it; you can even be creative and make a spear! can also be thrown! We did not know you could until one of our testers threw it their first time.
Carry it your way; carry it your style, your adventures just begin now!
CARRY IT ON YOUR NECK, HIDE IT LIKE A NINJA OR SHOW IT WITH PRIDE
Among all the possibilities there is one that keeps us hooked: Carrying Buzzard in your neck. Keep Buzzard simple. Remove your Tac-Clip (or not), string the paracord to the sheath and adjust the length of the cord to your taste.
Thanks to its low weight, Buzzard can be carried without even noticing it is there. The safety ring allows the user a secure extraction.
If you do not want it to bounce around you can even put it under your clothing, that way Buzzard will be still instead of swinging around.
On this section, we will try to explain some ways of carrying and using Buzzard, this is just the basics; Buzzard has been designed to be adjusted to your preferences, do you prefer carrying buzzard on a diagonal way? You got it! You can adapt Buzzard and its sheath to your preferences. Before carrying Buzzard you have to know that:
- Buzzard sheath is ambidextrous.
- Buzzard sheath can be put on multiple positions (horizontal, vertical and even diagonal)
- Buzzard sheath can be stringed to carry Buzzard on your neck.
- Buzzard is so small that you can carry it inside your bag or a big wallet.
- Buzzard will make your friends green of envy
There are two ways of carrying Buzzard, with and without the Tac-Clip. Here are some examples:
As an extra, we included two pieces of PVC that acts as “belt loops”.
These belt loops allow you to carry Buzzard in your belt or bag strips, vertically or horizontally depending where you attach them.
As being said previously, Buzzard tools can be easily used without being cut, how’s that? Just sheath it.
As you can see, Buzzard sheath has been designed to be used as a “handle” while using it as a wrench or screwdriver, in fact, its width is optimal for a regular hand but if you need an extra you can string your cord around.
Here is a couple of pro advices, if you put a bit key inside the hole while the knife is sheathed, it will act as a “lock”, so you will not be able to draw Buzzard of the sheath without removing the bit key.
Another pro tip: Replace the Phillips® key head we gave you for the ones of your taste. Adapt Buzzard to your daily routine and get the maximum profit.
If you prefer to use the tools without Buzzard’s sheath, you can always use the safety ring to avoid bouncing/swinging Buzzard, it will also help you with slipping and sliding and more importantly, you can apply an extra strength when using them. In addition, the two jimpings on Buzzard’s spine has been designed to match with these tools as well as to help you with fine cutting.
Our final pro tip: use your imagination: our testers has surprised us by finding new uses for Buzzard, its sheath and its accessories, just be creative! It is a knife meant to be carried every day so different people may find different ways to carry and use it.
I am used to carry it with me while practicing “downhill”, I unscrew the bike to its bits for maintenance and then make a good barbeque using Buzzard
On its early stage Buzzard blade was curve. The first buzzard prototype was made by the knotty hands of a farrier. He is one of our closest friends and the one of the most experience farriers in Europe.
He learnt to be a farrier in Germany. When he was 18 he decided he wanted to know more about this job, so he packed it all up and travelled to Germany where he stood for more than 5 years learning how to shoe a horse. Right now, he is both respected and known on Europe as one of the few experts on the field.
In one of his many lessons, he learnt how to forge a blade from scratches, when we showed him the first buzzard prototype, a piece of steel with the overall shape; he knew what he had to do. He took his oven, hammer and anvil and started forging the first buzzard.
That is how the first Buzzard was born, from hammering and forged by fire. As you can see the first Buzzard was curve! Buzzard final grinding and sharpening was made by machinery. The result speaks by itself:
This first design gave us an idea of how well the knife performed, the right size and how the tools would work. Buzzard was redesigned on a later stage; we decided to give it a new aspect, with a modern aesthetic more straight than curve and a new seax point; it all for the good of the product.
Buzzard has been designed at Albacete, the cutlery capital from Spain; At Albacete, we produce knives for the biggest cutlery brands worldwide.
Every component of Buzzard is from the EU or US: Our steel comes from Germany, Kydex® comes from the US; the Tac-Clip is made and assembled in Spain, etc.
Buzzard materials comes both from the EU and the US but it will be finally made on Europe. We have avoided any shortcut, if you want to make a quality product there is no easy ways to do it, we have been working on this business for so long and we have seen (and suffered) the impact of taking the easiest way to make your product. (aka manufacturing in third regions)
Buzzard has been made combining new technologies with handmade processes. Our blades are cut by CNC by a water machine to avoid heating them up.
The thermal treatment is carried out by our supplier on Europe, as well as the cryogenic treatment. We grind, sharpen and give the final touches in our factory.
Once buzzard is finished, we are just missing the engraving by our laser machine.
If we speak about the black vulture version things chance a little bit, the powder coating is applied after grinding, and then we sharpen the blades.
We are Hydra, a newborn cutlery company from Albacete, Spain.
We are a team composed by a small but talented crew who has been working on the cutlery business for more than 15 years. We have worked for the main knives-makers worldwide, in fact we still collaborate with them! However, the time has come to stop making projects for other companies and start our own.
Hydra name comes from the union of the many people that have helped us already; we have many collaborators both in EU and in the US willing to help us in our adventure. That is why we decided to be named “Hydra” since our company is composed by many heads, many people fighting for the same dream, thanks a lot to everyone who helped us and keep supporting us every day, bear with us guys! We would be nothing without your help!
The time has come to make our own designs, to start believing in us and start taking risks. If you have read to this point, thanks a lot for your time, I hope you have chosen to come along with us on our adventure and be part of Hydra.
We hope you enjoy Buzzard as much as we do, we are always open to new ideas, so do not hesitate to ask us for what you may need, do not forget to share your impressions as well! Remember, always use your own imagination, Buzzard is a knife to experiment with, you may find new ways to use and carry it.
We would be nothing without all the people who helped us. From Canada to Australia, from Spain to the U.S., from Germany to Russia, we would be nothing without all the people who lent us a hand on this project.
Before making this campaign, we didn't know we had a limitation of 35.000 characters (including images and videos) on the campaign. There are many reviewers so we could not include them on the front page, so we include them on the FAQ page. Besides that, we will make updates from time to time showing their videos and what they say about Buzzard.
Everyone on this list agreed to help us selflessly; they decided to help us even when there was no reward. We will owe a BIG one to everyone on this list for our entire life. On this list, you will find many of the reviewers that has helped us, our graphic designer, our industrial engineer, our photographer, etc. I hope I am not missing anyone as it is really important for us to honor our word and give full credit to all of them.
