About this project
The Winter Project is a true story documentary about backcountry snowmachining in Alaska. The story will stick to the roots of its origin as it will be as rigid as the backcountry it is being filmed in - featuring world class athletes, world class riding locations, created by a team of award winning filmmakers. Winter Project will not only capture backcountry snowmachining, it will also pay special tribute to the Alaskan filmmakers who influenced the early days of this sport. This portion of the film will be told by featuring the pioneers from High Life Films (Turnagain Hard Core series) and Frontier Films (2 Stroke Cold Smoke series).
The Winter Project will feature X-games medalists, riders featured in Slednecks film series, and the guys of High Life Films / Frontier Films including:
Hybrid Color Films will be taking the drivers seat for this film. Our team includes two Emmy Award winning members; Kyle Aramburo (Director - Post Production - 2013) and Richard Cooper (Best Cinematography - 2008). Here is our 2013 Demo Reel:
Our goal for the film isn't to just tell the story, it is to tell the legend of Alaska backcountry snowmachining. We've seen a large portion of the existing snowmachine films and although they are adventurous and exciting, no one has quite captured the actual people behind the huge jumps, gnarly drops, and x-game medals. So we would like to have a positive influence on snowmachining films, to take a look at the personal lives of these great athletes, and to create a documentary that captivates riders and non-riders alike. Our goals are fueled largely by our tireless passion for snowmachining.
To get funding for a film that could potentially change the way the sport is viewed isn't as easy as it sounds. Unfortunately for us, the athletes, and all the viewers that want to see this film - the snowmobile industry doesn't just write blank checks. So after trying to get momentum funding this film in a more traditional way, we decided to put the fate of our project in the hands of the people that will be interested in viewing it. That is where you come in, nothing says this project should get made more than getting the people who are going to watch it on-board. Now that the project is live and we have Winter Project backers, a couple incredible companies that share our vision have signed on and are now backing us too - those compaines (AMDS, A2D Sledworks, Continental Featherlite, Davis Block, Team CC, Slednecks, and Friends of Chugach National Forrest Avalanche Information Center) and YOU - are giving this project the boost we need to turn this idea into an incredible film!
Our goal is to raise $140,000. We've done a lot of math to make sure we are asking for the right amount. This balancing act is similar to that of blue bird day after a massive storm when we want nothing more than to shred all that new powder, but we have to calculate the avalanche danger and make the educated decision to go or not. In this case the last thing we want to do is make the crowd-funding mistake of asking for too little or asking too much and not reaching our mark. Thus, we are seeking what is required to turn this vision into a reality. The $140,000 will pay for:
- Heli Time ( to include Cineflex + Quad + Film Crew Heli )
- Production ( to include Equipment and Music )
- Expenses ( to include Talent and Travel )
- Operations ( to include Permitting and Accounting )
- Reward Fulfillment
- Payment Fees ( to include Amazon and Kickstarter Fees )
- Top Ramen ( fund for Hybrid Color and Crew )
The really cool part of backing a project on kickstarter - you aren't just giving away money is you'll actually be receiving something! Whether you are after a DVD, t-shirt, or your own backcountry experience - we have something for you. After our project is successfully funded, we will send out a questionnaire to see what size or which poster (see options below) you want on your order.
International Shipping: More Countries! More Continents!
Our reward levels are available to backers in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the USA. (But please note that additional charges for international shipping apply - add $10 to any order that requires shipping outside of the US.) We're so happy to have you aboard.
Risks and challenges
To successfully complete this film we will have several challenges & risks to overcome. The first and foremost is funding it - which is where you come in! After this project is funded we will have the unpredictable weather factor. Luckily for us we have been mitigating this factor for years and we will leverage technology and our gear to battle this one. Another major risk will be avalanches and the normal everyday backcountry hazards. We will be working closely with our friends at Chugach National Forrest Avalanche Information Center, the training we have received, and our gear to mitigate a very large portion of this risk. Putting all of these pieces together (including your support) is the only way we can successfully complete this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
In a scenario where we don't reach our goal of $140,000, no one is charged and unfortunately the film doesn't get made. This is a worst case scenario and this is why we need everyone to team up with us and support this documentary.
We are pleasantly overwhelmed by the amount of emails we have coming in offering to carry equipment, shovel jumps, and come show their skills. Huge thank you for the interest in our project. The answer to this question is we aren't even thinking outside of the kickstarter at this point. We are putting 110% of our effort into getting this thing successfully funded. That being said we ask that if you have the same passion for this sport as us – please share our project on your social media accounts. The majority of the people visiting our kickstarter came from social media – so that would be a huge contribution to our project!
Now that KICKSTARTER is on the scene it's really awesome because we can reach out to you our fans and the fans of snowmobiling/snowmachining to see if this is a viable project that you all want to see. We can make a movie together!
