Is this what it sounds like?
If it sounds like the story of a boy and his cyborg protector on the run from a soulless, shape-shifting assassin made of liquid metal, adapted for stage and told exclusively in the words of William Shakespeare, then yes.
How can you claim that this production is “presented” by William Shakespeare?
We adhered to strict guidelines regarding the usage of Shakespeare’s works. Each line and phrase is taken directly from folios printed by or before 1685, and many extended sections of dialogue are composed of individual lines from separate works. Only proper nouns and pronouns were subject to change, as dictated by the plot. In these instances, all proper nouns are supplanted only by pronouns or other proper nouns, and all pronouns by other pronouns. In some cases, corresponding verb tenses are modified. These practices enabled us to accurately retell the story of Terminator 2: Judgment Day while remaining true to the words of Shakespeare in form (if less so in intent).
How did this project come about?
In early 2010, we were looking for a way to weave a streak of independent theater into Nashville’s thriving independent music scene. We wanted to create theater that was approachable, fun, and perfectly at home on a rock club stage. We knew we wanted to incorporate Shakespeare, but we didn’t know exactly how until a late-night conversation revealed the way: combine the immortal wit and pathos of Shakespeare’s words with the unforgettable characters and story of one of the greatest action movies of all time. Shortly thereafter, we bought a pair of giant “Complete Works” hardcover collections and began to piece together the script, line by line. Eight months (and countless heavily highlighted pages of Shakespeare) later, we had our complete script. Our focus then turned to production.
Why Terminator 2?
First of all, it’s just an awesome movie. And you’d be amazed by how perfectly the themes so pervasive in Shakespeare’s plays lend themselves to the story of the Terminator: horrific prophecies, charges of madness, the terror of an implacable enemy, the fierceness of a mother’s love for her son. While it’s loaded with outrageous action sequences, one-liners and comic moments (which we’ve worked hard to honor), Terminator 2 is a theme-driven film that invests heavily in its main characters. In our reworking, we were continually struck by extended passages from Shakespeare that seemed as though they could have been written specifically with these late 20th century characters in mind.
How can I help?
As a theater company, we’re pretty crafty. Husky Jackal is a collection of craftspeople: actors, artists, sculptors, graphic designers, musicians. But we still need raw materials to work with. Your donation will help cover the expenses associated with set building, props, costumes, lighting and audio rental fees, rehearsal space, publicity, et cetera. We’ve broken down our budget item for item, and $3,000 is on the low end of our potential operating range. And that’s rehearsing in a warehouse that doubles as a moped co-op. Our hope is to raise enough to build a production that’s not only memorable, but portable. If the audience is there, we’d love to expand our reach to meet them.
