Welcome to the first Hurlbat Limited Kickstarter campaign. We have built a prototype modular 28mm scale gladiator arena and we want to raise funds to develop it into a polished retail product.
The arena is available either as a kit or completely assembled and painted. All of the curved sections use the same footprint so can be swapped around to give a variety of layouts and new straight sections will allow for different arena shapes. We have designed arena floors which suit a variety of games and these can be bought separately from the arena sections.
Our initial funding goal will show us that there is demand for this product and will fund the development of:
- Straight sections, giving more variety of layout
- A detailed PDF guide to the assembly and painting of the arena model which will be free to download
- Retail-friendly packaging
The initial funding goal is quite low as we already have all of the manufacturing equipment we need and have completed all of the initial section designs. We won't put the arena on general sale until after we have shipped all Kickstarter rewards and the retail prices at launch will be higher than those during this campaign.
Our stretch goals will allow us to take everything to another level with:
- Upgrades – design tweaks and extra design features which improve the quality of the existing sections so that everyone gets a better product
- New Sections – additional designs which can be chosen as part of the complete arena pledges or as add-ons
- New Add-ons – new gaming accessories which can be purchased as add-ons for any pledge level
We hope that you will take a look at the pledge levels and other information below.
Show Your Support
If you would like to show your support for our project but do not wish you receive any rewards then you can pledge £1.00 or more at the "Patron" pledge level and receive our eternal gratitude and a mention on our website Hall of Fame for the project. We appreciate your noble sacrifice for the gratification of the crowd.
À La Carte
Want to bag some goodies but none of the other pledge levels suit you? Select the "For Those About to Die" pledge level to receive our PDF assembly and painting guide; any other PDF rewards we unlock and access to purchase any unlocked add-ons from the menu further down. Since we don't know what you'll be buying, this pledge level does not include shipping which will be calculated and invoiced after the campaign concludes (see the "Add-ons" section for our shipping estimator). You'll also be included in our website Hall of Fame.
The "Blood and Sand" pledge levels get you a single arena floor to use in your Gladiator games, either in unfinished wood or painted and varnished, depending on which pledge you select. You can choose from any of the unlocked designs and shipping is calculated based on your location. You'll also get the PDF guide; any other PDF stretch goals we unlock; your name in the Hall of Fame and access to purchasing add-ons. You will need to pay additional shipping for add-ons, as explained in the "Add-ons" section.
Arena façades are a new set of pledge levels which offer a cheaper alternative to a complete arenas but are still a more attractive playing area than a board alone.
Façade pledges include an arena floor of your choice and a set of interior walls in either stone or wood. The façades include torch brackets and the same detailing as the fronts of arena sections and will include several doors and spare pieces for extra variety. Façades are available as either a kit or assembled and painted.
Note: The final versions will have 1" deep bases for extra stability.
EXTRA-LARGE FACADE - For anyone looking for truly epic gladiator fights or wanting to use 40mm or 54mm scale models we have just added two new pledge levels for a 30” diameter round arena with a 9 piece interlocking floor and choice of wooden or stone façade approximately 10 cm / 4” high. Since this façade set is of a different scale, it is not compatible with our arena sections or other arena floors. The designs of the walls will be the same as the standard façades but larger!
This is the main attraction - the "Editor" pledge levels offer a complete arena model either as a kit or an assembled and painted model. The graphics below explain the options available and you'll also get the PDF guide; any other PDF stretch goals we unlock; your name in the Hall of Fame and access to purchasing add-ons. If you are from outside of the UK, you will need to pay additional shipping for add-ons, as explained in the "Add-ons" section.
We'll contact you after the Kickstarter to confirm which arena sections you want to receive.
Early Bird Incentives
We wanted to reward those of you who were prepared to back the project early on but didn't want to clutter up the pledge levels with "Early Bird" versions of every pledge. In the end we decided that the first 50 backers who pledge for a complete arena (8, 10 or 12 section; kit or assembled and painted) will get £10.00 credit to spend on any of the starting or initial add-ons.
The "Lanista" pledge level is only available to established retailers (bricks & mortar or online) and you must contact us with proof of your retailer status before selecting this pledge level. You will receive five 10-section arena kits at approximately 30% discount off the Kickstarter retail prices (which are already discounted from the post-Kickstarter prices); access to purchasing add-ons; and we will list you as a stockist on our website. We'll work with you come up with a good mix of arena and add-on options.
We have selected high-grade laser ply for this model. It’s more expensive than MDF, but provides a better finish for painting; less charred edges; less smell and has a natural grain which looks great when stained to represent wooden structures. The painted model uses a mixture of stains; acrylics and dyes and the arena floor is also matt varnished for durability.
Pictures of the final designs for Stone Straight I and Stone Straight II will be available shortly.
Work In Progress:
Our arena floors are available in four layouts to fit with the different configurations of arena.
The middle sections of the lozenge floors can be removed in order to convert a long lozenge to a short lozenge or a short lozenge to a circle. Arena floors can either be supplied plain or have a design engraved into them. Our initial designs for round arena floors are shown below and we will hopefully unlock a variety of new designs for all arena layouts as part of our stretch goals.
We already have a small but growing range of gaming accessories made from a variety of materials including ABS plastic, wood and photo-printed metal. Some examples are below and you can see loads more on our website:
Through our stretch goals we hope to fund the development of a range of gladiator themed tokens and other gaming accessories which we will make available to purchase as add-ons. Some of our initial ideas include tokens for dropped equipment; bases; status markers like wounds, blinded, fatigued; popularity trackers and more still to be revealed.
If we exceed our initial funding goal then further stretch goals will fund the development of new accessory products and other enhancements to our new gladiator range.
Would you like a little extra?
After selecting any pledge level you can increase your pledge in order to select unlocked add-ons from the menu below. Shipping for add-ons is not included in any of the pledge levels except the full arena for backers in the UK, so will need to be added after the campaign closes. We only charge shipping at cost and a shipping estimator is included below.
You can estimate the cost of shipping using the table below but we will calculate and invoice for the exact amount once the campaign finishes and you confirm your choice of pledge options and add-ons. Please bear in mind that boxes and other packaging materials weigh something too!
We don't want this campaign to be a one-way sales pitch so please get involved and share your ideas for design improvements, new sections and new game accessories.
As well as commenting on the campaign and sending us messages via Kickstarter, you can also visit our Facebook Page or website. You can also read all the great feedback we've been getting from our eBay sales.
If you've pledged for a complete arena then unlocking stretch goals will mean design improvements for your model so please help us spread the word!

Risks and challenges
Equipment failure is a major risk for a project like this where we intend to do all of the manufacturing ourselves. When we produced a short-run of prototype models last year, a fault developed on our laser cutter and some customers were left either waiting a long time or we had to turn away their orders. We’ve learnt from this and we now have two fully operational laser cutters and a full set of spares for each as well as resin casting; 3D printing; dye-sub and other equipment.
It is possible that we could be victims of our own success and end up with pledges for a large number of painted arenas that take us longer than anticipated to assemble, paint and pack. We believe that we have set a reasonable timetable for delivering rewards but in the event the we get significantly more pledges than we are expecting then we plan to add a temporary employee and take short-term additional space in our office building.
We are a small organisation with one full-time and three part-time staff so long-term illness or other major problem could leave us short-handed and potentially at risk of delivering our rewards later than expected. If necessary we believe that we could get additional short-term resource to assist us with reward delivery.
Shipping rewards quickly, accurately and efficiently is a significant part of any Kickstarter which offers physical rewards. We have been operating a small but busy mail order business for several years now and one us has as significantly longer experience of mail order in another organisation. One further risk is that we have significantly underestimated the costs of international shipping and end up making a loss on some international pledges. We have a completely built and test packed one of the prototype models and obtained multiple shipping quotes so hopefully we have got it right.
The third parties involved in this project have been deliberately kept to a minimum and we will be using established suppliers for raw materials and packaging. All the rewards will be manufactured by us using existing equipment that we use regularly in order to avoid the possibility of incurring unexpected costs or delays from third-parties.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
