About this project
Hi, I'm Laura. I'm a Brooklyn-based artist who works in costume design and performance art. I've worked with the Madagascar Institute, Rubulad and Swimming Cities to bring beautiful handmade costumes to events for the past four years in New York, as well as working as a seamstress and professional costume builder for commercials, and for the Museum of Sex.
Every spring I travel to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, where hundreds of artists, musicians, and puppeteers gather each year to create, share, and perform new work in community parades and shows. This year will be my third Mardi Gras. Last year I spent three solid weeks creating a giant floral puppet narwhal, lit from within, which was mounted on a cargo bike and presented with a crew of six gowned and wigged attendants for the Eris parade. I also debuted my performance Egyptian Shumba, a go-go mummy performance, the first incarnation of Monster Puppet Burlesque, at Mudlark Public Theatre's Mardi Gras Cabaret. And last fall, I brought down a giant handsewn sparkle skeleton act involving fake prop food, for a Halloween performance and to participate in the Day of Dead parade.
Since then my repertoire has grown to include more acts featuring monster coitus, frantic dance routines, and of course, mild nudity. Called "exotic eye candy" by Time Out New York, my work seeks to dazzle, amuse and excite the audience with an array of colorful sequin and weave-encrusted fun. Funds from this kickstarter will be used to:
- Create a new act from scratch (theme and details are top secret for now, but it's the biggest one yet!)
- Ship costumes for all four routines
- Transportation to and from New Orleans for this spring's performances.
I sew and stuff each part of every costume myself, by hand, using mostly donated or found materials, and drawing on my years of training as a seamstress and costume designer. I also make my own wigs, some of which are two feet across! I greatly appreciate your support - no amount is too small. Each donation is a vote of confidence in my creative work and I thank you in advance. I hope to see you out in New York or New Orleans, and that you will catch my act and laugh and maybe feel a little funny in your pants. Thanks for helping make my glittery, puppety, pervy dreams come true!
