What is “Outbreak: Deep Space?”
Outbreak: Deep Space is a fully stand-alone pen, paper & dice Role Playing Game system made by the creators of Outbreak: Undead, the Zombie Survival Role Playing Game. Outbreak: Deep Space will allow you to simulate any type of Sci-Fi Survival Horror scenario, under any circumstances, in any setting you can imagine for your tabletop games.
Take inspiration from existing Sci-Fi/Horror Lore or create your own deadly opponents for your players to perish by. Fill them with the with fear, uncertainty, and danger that are all the best tropes of various sci-fi horror lore.
Infestation Terror - Run a campaign of Biological Infestation opponents using ‘Viral’ elements, aka “Zombies in space”.
Invasion Terror - Run a campaign where your players are attacked by sentient creatures, be they human or alien.
Trans Dimensional Terror - Run a campaign where your players are under siege from terrors from beyond our mortal comprehension. Simply replace the Viral mechanic with 'Sanity Loss'.

While the book layout is still being finalized, it is currently slated for 240 pages, as a stand-alone system. This project will be to fund the first printing in the United States.
What makes Outbreak: Deep Space unique?
In Outbreak: Deep Space, you can expect:
- A fully modular ‘Tech’ System, which allows you to create any type of weapon using a unique point-buy system based on Chassis, Power Sources, and Accessories.
- New ‘Horror Traits’ you can use to produce menacing, terrifying, and horrific Opponents that will test even the best-armed and most seasoned combat veterans.
- New O.B.M. (One Big Monster) entries that can turn the tide of any campaign. Face off against The Chimera, The Eurynomos, The Queen, and other creatures in any campaign style, or just build them into the lore of your own story.
- A brand new streamlined combat system that features combat tracking, and realistic Descriptors allowing you to differentiate between characters with different skill sets using the same weapons.
Outbreak: Deep Space steps away from our first product, Outbreak: Undead, which focused on survival horror in the modern day. Here we're bringing you the same sense of realism and terror, now set against a stark and uncaring universe. All the rich detail you've come to expect is still there, along with years of research and painstaking attention to detail.
True to the survival horror genre, Outbreak: Deep Space isn't as concerned with whether you'll die but how, and what you can accomplish in the time you have left...

Hunters Books Custom Dice
Outbreak: Deep Space uses sets of D6's for a number of reasons, such as tracking Depletion (for Ammo), Initiative, and Combat. Using our new 'D5!' mechanic, you may find yourself shooting, only to hear the "click,click,click" of your gun, or see a flashing battery light turn suddenly off.
These dice function specifically for this mechanic in Outbreak: Deep Space, come in 4 different colors (pictured below), and feature the Hunters Books symbol on the six face.

Do I need Outbreak: Undead to play?
Short Answer: No, you do not!
Long Answer: Outbreak: Deep Space is a stand alone game. If you've already played Outbreak: Undead you'll benefit from a deeper understanding of the core system but we've made sure this new game doesn't require knowledge of our previous work for those of you who missed out.
Wait? Don’t you have a PDF for this already on DTRPG?
Yes we do, but it's getting a major face lift. We've decided the system deserves its own book, rather than merely serving as a module for Outbreak: Undead, and we're also looking to upgrade to a full-color hard-bound book (something we've wanted to do for a while). We feel this is the perfect opportunity to make that happen!
What if I already own the module PDF?
We'll be updating that file. Let's make that clear: ANYONE WHO HAS PURCHASED THE OUTBREAK: DEEP SPACE PDF WILL RECEIVE THIS UPDATED VERSION of O:DS ABSOLUTELY FREE OF CHARGE.
What about Outbreak: Undead?
We're glad you asked! This is an excellent time for us to also announce something very exciting: we're working on a second edition of Outbreak: Undead! (Estimated Gen Con 2015) Curious what's coming? Make sure you select the option with the Outbreak: Undead Primer. This Primer will serve as the first step in preparing our survivors for the coming of Outbreak: Undead Second Edition, and is a booklet detailing the bridge in mechanics from 1st edition to 2nd edition. Each backer of this Kickstarter campaign at the $100 level will receive a copy of the LIMITED PRINT RUN of this Primer!
That's all well and good, but really, what is the money being used for?
Currently, we are 99% done with development and about 80% done with the book layout, and the money will be going towards printing! It's always hard to know how many books you should order, and these things aren't cheap! Our goal is to release this book at the cheapest price point we can manage. That requires a big print run, and we can’t do that without your support. Book printing and shipping are VERY expensive, and this campaign lets us hopefully mitigate some of that while also offering a bunch of perks for all you early adopters!
Who Are We?
We are Hunters Books, a team of veteran producers, marketers, and game designers who are responsible for the Award Winning Zombie RPG “Outbreak: Undead”.
Our company strives to create games that are fun, unique, and something we as gamers want to play. Every decision and ounce of effort for Outbreak: Deep Space has been about bringing you a flexible, well-designed, and most importantly exciting RPG experience.
Chris De La Rosa (Lead designer): Chris has a strong background in psychological research, and has done graphic design for both MGM and Netflix and is a well known designer in the Book Publishing field. He brings years of game development and graphic design experience to the table. Chris also re-enacts children's night terrors. He is an alumni of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.
Robert Watts (Producer/Editor): Robert currently spearheads the development of content in the film & television, literary, digital and gaming spaces for Hollywood based production and management company, Heroes and Villains Entertainment. He is a Chapman University Graduate with a B.F.A. in Film Production and a Minor in Honors - Zombiology [no, really]. Robert no longer attends Zombie Conventions after an unfortunate 'indecent' involving a conventioneer. He is an alumni of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.
Ivan Van Norman (Marketing Manager): Ivan has worked in every field of the Entertainment Marketing, from Video Game Public Relations to App Development, to Post Production Associate at Dreamworks Animation. He is a noted personality in nerd culture, and was a featured contestant on the TBS show "King of the Nerds". Ivan has an exaggerated fear of Segways. He is an Alumni of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.

Risks and challenges
With every new venture, there is always a risk in just doing it. As it is with most Kickstarters, the largest Risk is not obtaining the amount of money we need to print this book. Book printing is very expensive, and it usually takes a LONG time to do it. We know our budget with this book, and there is very few margins for error in the pricing.
This is also our FIRST COLOR BOOK, and it's very different then doing black and white. We are extremely excited for it, but it's a brand new challenge that we have not faced yet before.
Finally, we also have a deadline, Gen Con. The only way we'll be able to make it for that convention is by going to you: our fans, and the fans of survival horror everywhere. If we don't attend Gen Con, we may as well hang up our hats as developers (not to mention we also paid for the booth already).
