Release Date, New Videos, DeviantArt… N’ Stuff
The time is nigh my friends. Well, not that nigh, but pretty nigh. The bad news is that we are going to exceed our estimated December 2014 ship date. The good news, is that we are only going to exceed it by 3 weeks. :)
I do apologize for this slight delay, especially because I’ve mentioned a couple times this year that we are on track to deliver before December. The tail end of development has proven to be the most challenging and time consuming bit. But, I do take comfort in the fact that we are still within a fairly reasonable launch window, relative to our estimated date. The extra time will make a big difference for us, and for you. A lot can be done in just a few weeks. With that said, I hope you’re pumped for Jan 21st!
I have a lot of work to do between now and then and these updates do take some time to put together. So, if I don’t do an update later this month, or possibly even during November, just know that I’m bustin’ ass over here.
P.S. If I don’t have your survey response by the end of November I will assume that you do NOT want to be listed in the credits, as that seems the safest option given the mature nature of the game. So if you’ve been sitting on that, get that in!
Dev Vlog: Date Gift System
Here’s another behind the scenes development video showing off our date gifting system. When you go out on dates with the girls you can bring special gift items with you that, when given to your date, will have some type of effect on the puzzle. It adds a lot of depth and strategy to the experience and it’s fun to put together different combinations of gifts to try and win your date over.
HuniePop on DeviantArt
We’ve built up so much awesome art for this game that we’ve decided to start our own DeviantArt profile to share the wealth. We are going to be posting up a new piece of art almost every weekday from now until at least the end of the year. It might be old, it might be new, it might just be a concept sketch, but it’s all going to be high res, downloadable, and absolutely beautiful.
The best part is it’s just going to be a taste of what you’ll get to experience in the game and certainly in the artbook for those of you that ordered that. So, if you have an account on DeviantArt, give us a watch! We’re gonna be throwing up a ton of great stuff.
Intro Scene Previews
Check out these preview clips of the intro scenes for a few of the girls, including everybody’s favorite Kyanna/Audrey scene, now repurposed as an intro scene (because quests were axed, but there was no way I was letting this gem go). Though I’m sure it goes without saying, these scenes are how the girls will be introduced to the player early on in the game. Kyu will follow you around and give you advice on how to approach each new girl. She’s really good at this stuff, she’s been doing it for years.
In posting these scenes though, I think it’s important to re-stress a very important fact about this game that seems to get lost on a lot of people.
HuniePop Is Not a Visual Novel
Kyu brings up a good point. Whenever I see HuniePop being discussed online it is almost inevitably being referred to as a visual novel. I’ve even been guilty of it myself on rare occasion. You might call it a pet peeve, but I actually think it’s a really important distinction. If you go in expecting a visual novel you’re going to be disappointed; or pleasantly surprised, depending on your tastes I suppose. Scenes like the few above are uncommon and ultimately serve a gameplay purpose. There isn’t a linear narrative to follow, you get to choose who to visit on what day and at what time.
Forgive me if this comes across as a little ranty. I just don’t want my players going in under the illusion that they are about to be furiously clicking through dialog for hours on end. Instead, what you can expect is a dating sim / puzzle game hybrid that’s highly polished, full of strategic depth, packed with collectables, and hopefully just not quite like anything else you’ve ever played. Gameplay is and always has been our focus, it’s literally the second sentence on the Kickstarter.
Over the course of development, as we’ve iterated and refined our designs, this fact has never been more true. We try things and we find out what works and what doesn't. We’ve found that a comedic approach to our dialog fits the overall theme nicer than drama. We’ve discovered, within the confines of the game flow, lust provides a much stronger incentive than love (especially when you consider how many girls there are). Oh, and as you know, we’ve happily stumbled onto the notion that having some characters who are obnoxious, miserable and/or bitchy is funny and strangely endearing; though I leave that for each of you to decide.
Our approach is what sets us apart from the other dating sims out there and what I believe will make you love the game.
More Legend Tier Reward Previews
Just for the hell of it, let’s finish it off with a glimpse at a few more of the custom paintings that were created specially for the legend tier level backers since they were generous enough to share them with us. Thanks guys, enjoy!
