FEATURES AT A GLANCE
IN THE PRESS
Humism was founded in 2017 as a design studio that re-imagines time. To us, a watch is more than a timekeeper. Instead, the watch is an art canvas with an unique possibility: movement.
We are inspired by the potential of using time's movement to create visual beauty, and perhaps even philosophical meaning.
Design isn't easy though. Each new Kinetic Art design is born from hundreds of drafts and renderings, the work of months of meandering experimentation.
As we bring the idea into reality, each new prototype undergoes rigorous testing. The margin of error is tiny, as we craft our Kinetic Art on discs that are vanishingly thin.
We draw inspiration from the Kinetic Art movement, vibrant in the early 20th century. Kinetic artists broke from traditional static art pieces, and created art that produced beauty through movement.
These innovative visual experiences created new interactive relationships between the artwork and the viewer, compelling the viewer to become an active part of the artistic process.
Our designs reject the role that time has taken in the modern world, a number that regiments our lives.
Instead of a keeper of routine, our watches turn time into spellbinding art, revealing the beauty of the flowing present.
Time is no longer a number — time is beauty, time is art. The present is no longer to be planned away, but to be appreciated, as the flow of time mesmerizes and enchants us.

A WORD FROM THE DESIGNER
My latest Kinetic Art designs were born on the road. It was a journey of inspiration, from the spires of Edinburgh, to the tiles of Marrakech, to the stained glass of Lisbon. Each gave a little to my art, inspiring new movements and forms, helping me push the limits of the Kinetic medium. The new designs that emerged are more complex and refined, representing an evolution on my use of the medium.
Credit must also go to the hundreds of backers of our last Kickstarter. They have been wearing our watches for over eight months now, and have been a constant source of feedback. Their suggestions have pushed us to make continual improvements to our watches, and have made them even more aesthetic and polished.
I'm proud to share with you my new designs, Kato and Rhizome, along with the new Helios limited colorway.

The New Collection: Philosophies (II)
Our designs are intentionally abstract, so they can act as springboards from which each viewer can draw different personal meanings and inspirations.
Each Kinetic Art piece is different from its siblings, as they are each centered on different aspects of the Kinetic possibility.
All our watches are unisex, suitable for both men and women.
Founded on the simplicity of concentric circles, this design achieves an harmonious complexity. Different layers of petals bloom alternately, slowly building up to a climax as 48 petals all open simultaneously.
Perhaps our most ambitious design yet, this design draws you in and confuses you. A deceptive symmetry creates the simultaneous illusion of expansion and contraction. The design returns briefly to a balance, before beginning its journey again.
Limited Edition: Helios
In quite a drastic departure from our monochromatic roots, we are excited to unveil HELIOS, a limited edition colorway. This is the first new colorway we are launching, and it was selected by our past Kickstarter backers out of more than four dozen possibilities.
DASEIN (Limited to 290 Pieces)
Using three sculpted discs instead of two, this design allows for more variation across time. Patterns change in symmetry and size as the hour and minute discs move across one another.
EUDAIMONIA (Limited to 190 Pieces)
Four concentric rings of circles constitute this design. Alternating expansion and contraction make a play of perspective. Round forms, linear layers and smooth animation scales produce a balanced design.
To commemorate the launch of our new collections on Kickstarter, the first 300 watches backed (including both the Philosophies and Helios collections), will be limited 'Founders Editions.'
Our Kinetic Art time-pieces have found homes with happy customers in over 40 countries. Here is what they say about us.

If David had not stepped into the world of design, he would have worked in the non-profit field, having spent stints in Guatemala and Sierra Leone. Even now, giving back remains a personal necessity in each of his design projects.
To keep with this vision, 5% of our sales is donated to charity. One watch provides a month of emergency food rations for a child impacted by natural disaster.
We are partnered with Mercy Relief, a humanitarian relief agency responding to disasters around Asia, such as earthquakes, typhoons, and flood. They have provided aid to over 2 million people across 25 countries.

For Art to endure, it needs a strong foundation. Every one of our watches is meticulously crafted from premium materials sourced from around the world, and painstakingly quality-controlled. There are no short-cuts to Quality.
In the past year and a half, with the feedback of hundreds of past backers, we have steadily improved upon every aspect of our watches. Having worked with our manufacturers for over 2 years now, our processes are battle-hardened, and our watches have become even more durable and refined.
WHAT IS AN AUTOMATIC WATCH?
Unlike quartz watches which are powered by batteries, automatic watches are powered by human motion. Your arm's movement propels the hundreds of gears and springs precisely assembled in the watch mechanism — a feat of engineering artistry, and a refreshing change from the electronic circuitry we have gotten so used to.
The Japanese Seiko NH35A that powers our watch is famed for its durability and reliability. A generation ahead of the already robust 7S26, the NH35A is more refined and more accurate.
While we turn time into art, through the automatic watch, you turn movement into time. This relationship is symbolized in our custom rotor design, showcased through the open case-back.
The design is also a tribute to the Kinetic artists of the last century, who pondered the tensions between human and machine.
DIAMOND-LIKE CARBON COATING
To plate our watch cases black, we'll be using Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating. Considered the highest tier of PVC coating, DLC gives the color coating diamond-like hardness and resistance.
Sapphire Crystal is incredibly scratch-resistant, rating '9' on the Mohs scale of hardness, just a spot behind diamonds. We use sapphire crystal for both the top and bottom glass, with additional anti-reflective coating applied on the top glass.
316L SURGICAL STEEL
To frame our kinetic art, we designed a case that is minimalistic, almost geometric, with carefully balanced proportions, symmetrical bevels, and clean, angular forms.
The case is made from brushed 316L surgical steel, a step above the more common and less resilient 304L steel.
KINETIC ART DISCS
To ensure accuracy and durability, our discs are impossibly thin and light. Products of years of research, these discs are crafted with proprietary Japanese technology.
We use full-grain leather for our straps — the strongest and most natural-looking type of leather, as it comes from the uppermost surface of the hide, where all the "grain" is preserved.
Our leather is vegetable-tanned — a natural leather processing method that is much more time-consuming than the more commonly found chemical-based chrome-tanning method.
All our straps are built with quick release pins, allowing you to easily change styles.
We are perfectionists here at Humism. All watches are put through a series of stringent quality control tests, such as water resistance and drop tests. We manually regulate each watch to ensure they keep time accurately.
Multiple inspections are carried out throughout the assembly process, and each watch undergoes a final painstaking personal inspection before packaging.
Our watches come with an 18 month warranty.
316L MILANESE MESH ADD-ON
First forged in 19th century Italy, these straps are uniquely stylish, comfortable, and hardy. Available as an extra style option, add a set to your order if you'll like to change it up, or foresee getting your watch wet.
Our watches are designed to be unisex, and can fit both men and women.

Design is an incremental and often meandering process as we research, experiment, discard, and refine. Here's a brief timeline of our journey.
Risks and challenges
Making these watches has not been easy, as both precision and innovation were required to bring our artistic vision to life. However, we have worked with our manufacturers for over two years, and have successfully shipped watches to happy customers in over 40 countries, so we believe we are several steps ahead of other projects. It is always possible for delays with production though, so we have added some buffer time in our estimates to provide for this. We'll keep you informed every step of the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
