We're added stretch goals to our rewards, so that we can make the most of this momentum.

At $2750...

We'll add more content to our anthology - that means more illustrations, a few interviews, and extra surprise BONUS CONTENT to the print and digital issues for all our backers to enjoy. We'll also have tote bags to add on to your pledges. You can even vote on those on our Twitter and Instagram shortly - and we'll also take votes in our survey once the campaign closes.

At $3000...

We'll establish a seed fund to create more issues of HumanxNature! It will give us enough cash to pay a team of contributors, from writers and illustrators to guest editors. We'd love to make this zine self-sustaining, and this would be a HUGE step toward making that a reality.

We believe in this, and in you. So let's do it!

ABOUT OUR ANTHOLOGY

HUMANxNATURE is an anthology of writers reaching out from beyond the confines of their disciplines to engage the natural world. This collection of essays is a recognition of the ways the world shapes us—and how, increasingly, we leave our own inescapable print on the world. As our relationship to the natural world changes, we ask writers to explore what nature gives to us, and what we might owe in return.

Topics include: recolonizing the vegetal record, plants and myth, why we love (and need) to name plants, and misunderstood desolation.

This project grew out of a desire to stretch the bounds of nature writing, to allow it to grow in the fertile soils of literature, science, and language as well as engagement with the natural world. We were never really separate, but our fates are now intertwined in an urgent way. We wanted to dive into what that complicated relationship looks like for writers from a broad range of backgrounds.

Missy is a production editor by trade, and has successfully launched two volumes of her own zine, Moonrise. After working together in both issues, we wanted to find a new and more in-depth project to work on together.

We've had months' worth of conversations about the kind of writing we wanted to read but couldn't find, writing that interrogated the lines between humans and nature. There were voices we wanted to engage with that we couldn’t hear. So we decided to reach out and publish that writing ourselves.

We knew the roles we wanted to fill: Missy in production and illustration, and Haley handling the contributors and line editing. With the writings of our contributors in hand, numbers crunched, and all our ducks in a row, we’re ready to ask you to help us make the zine a reality!

LET'S TALK LOGISTICS

We’ve confirmed receipt of all our written submissions, and are paying the writers out of pocket. We’ve also paid some small, associated projects costs upfront, like a domain name and test prints of the rewards.

Once funded, a portion of our proceeds will go toward reimbursing the editorial staff for those upfront costs. Out of the rest, we'll double the pay for writers for a total $100 per contribution. Then, the bulk of our funds will go toward printing costs, reward production, and shipping fees as detailed in each tier of support. And, finally, we'll make a $200 donation to the local organization SEED, ROOT + BLOOM, which supports BIPoc nature and herbal education in Boston.

Additional funds beyond our goal will go toward setting up an e-shop to sell additional copies of the anthology and merchandise—and possibly toward additional issues of the zine!

Risks and challenges

We've already worked out most of the editing and design work for the anthology, so that means the risks for this project are minimal.

The anthology design is in the final stages of refinement and pre-production, and will be ready to send to the printer as soon as the campaign is successfully funded! Additional rewards are print-on-demand, including our enamel pins. With the project funded, we’ll be scheduling our mailings by mid-September.

While there are sure to be occasional hiccups, we’ve spent several months front-loading the commissioning and production process to ensure this project is ready for success, right this minute!

All rewards are designed to stack, each tier adding a perk. We invite you to choose what works for you! No matter what you give, all backers will receive a digital copy of the anthology, if you choose. We'll send out a survey after funding to collect info on preferences.
