Joy-Con Color Matching

Let's talk about stretch goals.  We all like stretching but...

  • Stretch goals take a lot of planning and forecasting that can screw up a project
  • We're seriously committed to delivering on-time
  • It sucks when you sell out your friends and it seems just within reach...
  • Everyone is going to complain about how we prioritize each level
  • And we think we have a better alternative...

So with that in mind, we're just going to keep making sensible improvements that we can confidently deliver. We think this is a win/win and we think we'll delight everyone rather than use it as a sales tool.

So the first win is we’re able to consider more color combinations - yay! But alas I don’t think we can serve every single color combination out there so we want to hear from you what you want so we can best plan accordingly. More than likely if there's enough demand for a color its likely going to be a Kickstarter exclusive.

So please click the graphic below to vote, it shouldn’t take more than 20 seconds. Please vote even if you just want our default neon red/blue so that we can at least get a fair representation of all voices!

Please only vote once, don't rig the election, seriously...
Please only vote once, don't rig the election, seriously...

Great, all done voting? We're not going to say there's only going to be one winner, we just want an indicator to best tackle the problem. We’ll close the voting at the end of this week, so hop on it.

Hate to leave you on a cliffhanger, but we’ll save the detailed mic update for next week. Basically, we have spent this week literally identifying all the potential options to go through and we’ll share a more detailed update next. We’re operating under the principle of not delaying shipments while also covering those who want/need voice chat so I’d say overall we think we’re onto a solution that can satisfy both parties, but in the meantime, more testing is needed.

As for power pass through - the good news is we’ve learned it is possible to charge the Switch while using GENKI with a jungle of adapters that basically looks like a fire hazard (sort of like what you see on the right side of the above photo).

For now we recommend using the dock for charging with the dock adapter - there isn’t a practical way for us to add passthrough charging without (at least) doubling the size of the Genki circuit board, as we would need to include a variety of controller chips to manage USB data, and a power delivery systems (which honestly is scary as some of those power delivery hubs get really really hot when used with the Switch). We'll try to identify some options for you guys and maybe a good starting point for building a portable dock for us someday - but let us focus on delivering our first product before our minds wander!

Okay, just one more thing - and this probably would've been a stretch goal but we're starting to prototype a packaging that you won't just throw away, but actually be used as a case as well. We want to minimize waste but I can't make any promises right now as this honestly requires a huge upfront order commitment (custom packaging etc).  Anyway, stay tuned!

Thanks from Eddie and the GENKI team

Sounds like you guys are truly on the same page as the large dedication of your backers and that's awesome. Colors if possible, but realistic. No pass-through charging, and working to try mic support. Awesome work guys, and can't wait for the next update!

Okay at first we didn't expect the color to matter that much but wow with over a 1000 votes we can at least confirm there is a lot of viewership of these updates!

Joshua - Thanks and hopefully the next update will be more up your alley!

Adam - We’re thinking along the same lines here and not suggesting that we’re going to use extra materials, we just want to make creative use of it so that it serves beyond packaging. Actually would love to chat more with you about our idea…

Luca - We have identified 3 options we are still thoroughly testing and assessing for feasibility and viability. Each of them have their trade-offs. Will share more in our next update!

Yagami - Wow, I mean really thank you. I’ve actually lost like 5lbs (but its probably a good thing haha) since the launch of this project and all of us ended up passed out in the middle of the day working through the weekend. We kind of wish we had run the campaign slightly shorter now, but as much as this sounds crazy each of these challenges are exciting to tackle but it really is a rollercoaster. Anyway always a good reminder to step back and breathe (or eat and sleep properly!)

Ron - So we definitely played around with this idea, and we even came up with a DIY kit like LABO where you get to assemble GENKI, and have all the colors to choose from, and glue it together. We learned all this stuff for snap fit and customizations though is really really difficult for us at this size. So we inevitably were faced with making it like 30% thicker or optimizing its size with sonic welding and well we moved forward with the original plan.

Patrick - not sure but either way its fixed now!

Michael - thanks that did it. Thanks for the heads up with Pebble, and I had no idea Nintendo struggled with the red/blue (I thought it was just more demand!) We’ll definitely take this into consideration

Dominique - its our fault for calling it a vote, realistically we just wanted to know what everyone has so we can find the best solution to make the most people happy :)

Diego - I have not heard about NoA colors… wait are you saying you work for NoA? If so would love to talk!

Jay, Jake, Niraj, Ishmeet, Alex, Larisa, Casey - hope you all got your votes in the official way :P

I have the grey joycons but I don't mind whatever color it is. I just hope for microphone support. Thank you

Just my opinion here: The case idea is cool, but honestly it is small enough to fit in the majority of Switch cases (I'm actually planning on tossing mine in my headset case where my current 3.5mm adapter stays). Your adapter is so small it doesn't need a case, which I'm guessing is one of the main reasons that this Kickstarter has gone so well; I know that is why I'm backing it. So if reducing waste is your goal, go simple instead of using extra materials to create a custom case that isn't going to be used.

I'd prefer to receive the device later but with mic support

Thanks for the update, keep up the good work! I know things are probably hectic now but don't forget to get sufficient food and rest!

I think Neon Red and Blue is the most iconic and communicates the 1P/2P nature most effectively. However, if there was a solid modular way to remove the base color buttons and put other colors on that would be pretty neat. Perhaps something magnetic, with the actual button funtion underneath (think the Xbox Elite Controller's removable paddles).

In order to vote you need to log in to your Kickstarter account.

So that’s embarrassing I think I fixed the link!

You need to update the survey form to let your backers open it. Instructions here: https://support.google.com/docs/answer/160166

Also, chiming in to say that I'd rather see the team focus on one color -- Pebble ran into tons of production problems with different colors of plastic, and Nintendo also saw limited availability of red/blue joy cons in the earliest runs because it's harder to get colors right than to just do gray.

genki must be using the same voting system as the last presidential election -_-

    12. Casey on

My vote is for grey. I'd like both a grey option and a blue and red option though if possible since I'm buying 4 units.

I don't want to sound like a parrot, but I can't access the voting page. I don't know which colors I like best, so maybe I'll stick with P1 as neon red and P2 as the darker blue (for NOA employees only 😤)!

The voting won't let me vote says I need permissions, so I'm just gonna join the band wagon and vote here. I would like to see grey please.

    15. Alex Chipman on

Vote form is permission restricted. Standard switch grey please :)

Same about the form, ain't working for me

    17. Niraj Sanghvi on

Note: The permissions on that form to vote on colors are not set correctly: "This form can only be viewed by users in the owner's organization."

    18. Jake on

Agreed, I can’t see the survey because I am “not in the owner’s organization”
