Putting the Last 36 Hours into Perspective

Posted by Human Things (Creator)

There’s a few major events in your life that come up when you know everything in your life is about to change. Seriously, you guys have allowed what started as a passion project to become something much more. This post isn’t going to have pretty graphics and tech demos (though we’ve hidden a demo link in the comments section) - those will come later - I’m going to let our incredible designer and engineer rest this weekend after putting together an incredible launch. Here’s some figures we can all high-five over:

  • In under 20 minutes, 100 backers strong
  • In 2 hours you helped us blow past our funding goal
  • And in the first 24 hours you have propelled us into Top 10 Gaming Hardware Project on Kickstarter of all time (and top Nintendo accessory ever!)

In the meantime we received over 200 messages from Kickstarter, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and email. I think we tackled them all but here’s what we’re hearing you REALLY want:

  • Audio Input / Mic Support (Fortnite!)
  • Joy-Con Color Combos
  • Pass-Through Charging

We’re both super excited about these opportunities and nervous because they introduce uncertainty in a lot of the things we thought we had pretty much finalized. So our promise to you is that we’ll prioritize and dive deep into these three opportunities, communicate all the things we uncover about each, and get feedback from you along the way.

I’m also debating whether to do smaller more frequent posts or meatier bigger posts. I know everyone gets enough spam out there but at the same time we also want to make sure that we’re keeping the community up-to-date. With that said, we’ll try to balance it enough so that we’re making the content relevant and at least worth a read.

Game on, Eddie

Please don't rebuild the product if you have a finalized design and a manufacturer who has agreed to make it. This Kickstarter (like all of them) will be delayed. Whether or not it is an annoying delay depends on how many changes are made.

Thanks for the updates and congrats on the amazing success of the project so far.

Put me in the column of folks who are looking forward to the project as it was initially presented. No need for upgrades, it sounds awesome as is! Pass through charging is hardly “a must” IMO. Bring on the Bluetooth!

    3. Chandler Van De Water on

Looking forward to updates on receiving as that's a make-or-break feature for me.

I appreciate that you guys are looking into making a product with even more features but please take notice of what myself and others have written in here; I pledged for what you are offering, NOT a potential delay and features that where not part of your initial offering.
I would go as far as to pull my pledge should changes/delays happen due to changes in the core product.

Thank you for making this amazing Bluetooth adaptor for Switch!

Please add pass-through charging if possible since I'm sure receiving Bluetooth signal continuously will consume battery power.

Is it possible to receive voice via pairing of a Bluetooth headphone with a built-in mic (bidirectional Bluetooth connection) without audio issues?

Joycon color combo is a nice-to-have in my opinion, as black will always work with the Switch's already black unit color.

Keep up the good work team! Look forward to more updates soon.

Yes to pass-through charging. Big time. That makes your stand a viable solution for long distance airplane flights.

Mic support would be great, but I don't really have any desire for the other features - it's not a big deal to unplug the device to charge and I wouldn't be leaving it plugged in permanently anyway, it'd mean not being able to use any cases, and probably not being able to use a dock.

Colour-wise, all grey would be ideal - I'm sure a lot of Switch owners wouldn't have the red/blue combo, and it'd look terrible against the flourescent yellow joycons.

I don't care one bit about joycon color combos, and I don't need pass-through charging. I'd love mic support, but if it can't do it, it can't do it. I'd probably plug my headphones in (Arctis 3 BT) anyway if handheld, but it'd be nice for docked. I'd love to see that able to be accomplished, but I already backed the product as it is for a reason so if it stays as it is, all good too.

Pass through charging was the first issue I saw with this device. I think that is a must follows by the headset mic capabilities. Would increase my pledge by ten bucks if that's what it takes

Please remember MVP. Get an awesome minimum viable product out there. Get that cash rolling. Put in the extra features on new versions. I care more about getting product sooner than those new features.

    11. Jared on

It's in definite agreement that we backed what you already showed us.

Switch doesn't support any Bluetooth headsets... now you're making it able to support 2 of them. Any features past that are great, but all can wait until a Genki Pro release... Mainly so we can get it in our hands sooner without any compromises.

I've seen creators give "Early Access" to the previous backers to new ideas they've come up with... Years after the campaign ended and item shipped out.

So maybe when and if you do make a Pro version, that's your way of rewarding the backers for the support in these early days.

    12. David Heseltine on

I think mic support and at a minimum grey joycon colour options are 2 features you should try very very hard to include. Passthrough charging is far less important and I would be disappointed to see shipment delayed because of it.

Stay the course! Don't pull an Ossic. There can be later iterations of this idea that can incorporate more features in the future. Focus on what you have now and take the time to properly flesh out the tech before trying to cram it all in at the last minute like a college final. I'm more than happy to pay for this product as it is now and buy an upgraded version later. Thanks!

Bluetooth audio was the reason I backed this immediately. I can see why people would want mic support, but I worry that it would be extra complication with little return. Isn't fortnite the only game that would even support the mic? Usually the Nintendo app is required. The power and bricking situation always worries me so I'm not even sure I'd use it if you could do pass through.

    15. Jesse Sims on

Agreed with other commenters, the new feature ideas are really cool and all but I say focus on your initial vision and get a functional high quality product out the door.

Some way to charge the Switch on the go and have wireless audio would be fantastic, but if it isn't possible it isn't possible.

    17. Human Things Creator on

Just thinking out loud here and I hate posting anything that I can’t commit to but here are my initial thoughts. I don’t want to do anything that will delay the product or require an extra cost burden to the core product.

The first problem is likely more of a software thing and thus we could stagger releases by saying those who want it now we can ship and those who want to wait we can update when it’s ready. Unfortunately updating the hard code can’t be done on the user side.

The second problem is more of a quantity and assembly logistic issue. If you ask anyone behind the NikeID offering, even with the add-on pricing they ultimately lose more then that in offering the service. And let’s be frank there are a crap load of color combos. I’m confident we can cover grey buttons at a minimum but we’ll probably need a survey earlier on to find out what everyone wants and if there’s some innovative customization process we can pull off. So yeah no risk to delivery times at least for the default color!

Thirdly... yeah this one. We frankly can’t do this without turning it into a dock. It’s going to be bigger, costlier, require way more certification and take a lot more time. Basically passthrough for a usb audio device is impossible but a hub/dock/charger/battery with passthrough for GENKI could in theory work (we’ve tried a combination of hubs and converters but no luck yet)

Again to reiterate none of the ideas above have been vetted through the manufacture or even our tech mage :)

I'm glad you guys listen to demand. While some of these feature set is great to have, I hope these won't cause unnecessary delay by redesigning things that already final. You guys already make something I really wanted, if you can't make it work within the timeframe, please don't pursue it too much.

    19. BL on

I thought pass-through charging was impossible since you had to either receive power or send it, not both at the same time through switch's USB-C. Either way, if you figure it out, more power to you! All I want is mic support pls!!

    20. Yagami Kira on

Mic support and color selection would be nice to have if possible. Personally I'd rather not have pass-through charging. With all the recent bricking drama, all it takes is a handful of reports to bury Genki six feet under. Also, I bet there will be at least one or two genius that will try to dock the Switch with Genki attached if there's a female USB-C below. While I trust the team to do a good job, I simply don't think the reward is worth the risk.

Update wise... in my humble opinion, twice per month would be great. Minimally at least once per month if the team is really occupied.

    21. Ben Walter on

My honest opinion of those three emprovments save them for the Genki 2 or a pro version. Focus on the project you have and getting it out. I've seen too many hardware Kickstarters fail or come out with a subpar product because of feature creep like this.

The extra things you mentioned sound nice and all, but honestly it would all just be extra for me. I backed this project because you offered what I was looking for: a low latency USB-C Bluetooth transmitter for Switch. Pass-through charging sounds like a great idea, but I think adding too much would fundamentally change the product and push back development when all I wanted to begin with was a transmitter.

I think it would be nice to get a update at least every week, if you guys can as I know you're hard at work on genki

Pass-through charging would make this a 100% must-buy for sure! That would be amazing!
