Our Kickstarter campaign is nearly over, but you can still follow the project at www.cultmoviecards.com
Fifty-two cards. Fifty-two of your favourite cult movies. An awesome deck of playing cards for people who love cinema as much as we do.
Each beautifully illustrated Cult Movie Card will be inspired by an iconic film, with an original cult movie pattern on the reverse.
We’re keeping our cards close to our chest for now. But you can bet that cinema’s greatest Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks and numerical-themed heroes and villains will star in the Cult Movie Card deck. Ace and the Seven Samurai are just an early glimpse of what's to come. Rest assured, all cards will be revealed by the end date of this project.
And don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten the two Jokers...
We want to make a deck that film fans can cherish forever. Cult Movie Cards will be USPCC-approved, as used by the world’s best magicians and poker pros, produced with the highest quality printing methods available.
- A full 52-card USPCC deck (plus two Jokers)
- Classic, durable Bicycle playing card stock with an air cushion (linen) finish
- Cellophane-wrapped and presented in a custom-designed box with a Bicycle seal
- Each card features original artwork inspired by a cult movie character
Each card will be lovingly designed by award-winning illustrator Paul Willoughby, creative director at Human After All. Paul is both a great artist and a true film fan, who will pour all his passion into this project (just take a look at him drawing Natalie Portman).
Flip the cards over and you’ll also see a unique pattern on the reverse. Human After All's creative Eve Lloyd Knight has designed an original cult film pattern especially for the deck.
Premium Reward Tiers include:
DOUBLE IMPACT: Take two decks – one for you and one for a friend, or maybe one for playing and the other to keep? Your call.
THE DECK, UNCUT: You receive DOUBLE IMPACT (two decks) plus a limited-edition Uncut Sheet of Cult Movie Cards, direct from the USPCC press. It's not an art print per se, but makes a tasty way to display the deck in all its Cult Movie Card glory.
MAY THE FOURS BE WITH YOU: Four decks of Cult Movie Cards.
THE BLACK (& GOLD) JACK BUMPER PACK: An exclusive, signed, limited-edition black-and-gold giclée print of all four Jacks on premium paper, plus a limited-edition Uncut Sheet and DOUBLE IMPACT Cult Movie Cards.
THE DIRTY DOZEN: Twelve decks of Cult Movie Cards (a 'brick', in the parlance of cardists) plus a limited-edition Uncut Sheet.
We're a London-based creative agency who believe in connecting people with their passions. Our passion? Movies, of course...
Cult Movie Cards is the brainchild of our editorial director Jonathan Crocker, a film journalist who’s written for the likes of Total Film, the Guardian and Time Out for more than a decade. Plus our extended team has almost a decade of experience in designing, illustrating and writing for film.
Our movie-themed work includes:
- Film mag Little White Lies, which we co-founded and designed for 8 years
- BAFTA 2014’s Film Awards campaign
- SXSW 2012’s film tote bag and poster
- London Film Festival 2011’s visual identity
- Official posters for The Fighter, Insidious and À Bout de Souffle
- Criterion Collection’s DVD artwork for Quadrophenia
- A world-class collection of alternative illustrated ‘70s film posters at colette Paris & Kemistry London
Oh, and Rob Lowe was pretty happy with Paul Willoughby's Wall Street Journal portrait...
In June 2013, thanks to 828 backers in more than 40 countries, we successfully produced a self-published book, Curious Iconic Craft: Designing Magazines That People Love, right here on Kickstarter.
Human After All's creative team is kept very busy with our day-to-day work, but we'll be using every spare minute we have to develop the Cult Movie Card deck over the next four months.
We'll share updates of the illustrations as they happen on @HumanAfterAll and the completed deck of Cult Movie Cards will be printed in Autumn 2014, with delivery due before Halloween. If you plan ahead, they'll be the perfect Christmas gift.
Risks and challenges
Paul, Jonathan and the rest of Human After All creative team are still creating the Cult Movie Card deck. It’ll be a challenge, but we'll keep them well fed and watered, and Paul will be tweeting [@willoprojects] updates of his illustrations as he goes.
Ultimately, this is a labour of love and will attract the same attention to detail for design, handling, shipping and fulfilment that goes into every piece of work we produce.
Production will occur in the US and we'll assign a dedicated distribution company to deal with dispatch and orders. We've worked with these distribution firms for numerous projects over the years, both for our Kickstarter project Curious Iconic Craft, and for major clients including Google and Facebook.
Risks & challenges outside of our control include natural disasters or problems during shipping/production.
Final production schedules are determined by USPCC and our partner printers for rewards, so delivery dates may vary. Please note images shown are mockups and the final product may vary slightly, but always with the highest level of detail.
We'll continue to update our backers on the project development, production and shipping status, and we'll be available on Kickstarter mail, email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Twitter (@humanafterall) for any questions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
