Update: Because we had so many questions on social media we decided to make a video answering some of the questions. In this video, we also explain new stretch goals and the different pledges. If you have any other questions please messages us. Thanks so much.

Update: We just reached the first stretch goal

Update: New Stretch goals can be found at bottom of this page.

Update: This project is officially supported by Action VFX, Foundry and ftrack.

It’s with great pleasure that we present The complete Nuke Compositing course 2.0 on Kickstarter.

Last year we had 119 students from 21 different countries, we created over 50+ hours of high-quality production classes with the most important industry methods and techniques. We had one goal, to make the most comprehensive Nuke compositing course ever made. It was a huge success so we decided to make this course available again this year. (student testimonials can be found at the bottom of this page)

Using only production assets, we will teach you to be an Artist and not just a Software Operator. In this course, we will introduce you to the necessary soft skills to be a successful compositor. You will learn how to achieve your shots from a production and creative point of view developing a unique balance between creativity and technical skill.

This is not just a Nuke tutorial, it’s a compositing course that lasts over 15 weeks teaching you many disciplines like rotoscoping,  prep, clean up, keying, composition, lighting, photography basics, color, CG compositing, Python, scripting and much more. It will be taught by compositors for compositors. This is a unique opportunity to learn from professionals working in the industry.

This course will be developed by Hugo Guerra and Ricardo Ferreira, both of which, Foundry certified teachers, and joined by guest teacher Justin Gros Desir. It’s important to note that we are not just academic teachers, we are experienced artists still working in the industry today, this means that we will only teach production-ready techniques completely in line with today’s most advanced pipelines found in the world's top VFX companies.

Director and VFX Supervisor Hugo Guerra
Director and VFX Supervisor Hugo Guerra

Hugo Guerra is an award-winning Director and VFX Supervisor, he was the Head of the Nuke department at the Mill for 5 years and during his 20 year career Hugo has collaborated with many studios like Animech, BBC, Nexus, JellyFish, The Mill, Fire Without Smoke, Ubisoft, Deep Silver, and Sony Studios to name a few. Hugo has worked with some of the biggest brands in the world and he is a member of the Visual Effects Society and part of the advisory board for both the National Film and Television School and the Norwich Art School.

Senior Compositor Ricardo Ferreira
Senior Compositor Ricardo Ferreira

Hugo will be joined by senior compositor Ricardo Ferreira

Ricardo is an award-winning Digital Compositor with 10 years experience, He was part of the team that won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 2016 for the film Ex-Machina. Ricardo has worked for Industrial Light Magic, Cinesite, Prime Focus, MPC, Double Negative, Trixter, among others. He is an extremely experienced teacher of Visual Effects at University level, with multiple TV appearances as an expert in VFX and also as a lecturer for the Foundry.

Compositor Justin Gros-Désir
Compositor Justin Gros-Désir

And finally we will be joined by compositor and TD Justin Gros Desir

After finishing his Bachelor's degree in computer science, Justin decided to pursue his studies in Image Engineering and he got an internship as an RnD developer for Nuke at The Mill. Working closely with artists as well with his passion for creativity led him to dive into compositing for Nuke. Without forgetting his coding abilities, Justin is now a compositor and has worked in some of the biggest visual effects companies in the world such as The Mill, Industrial Light Magic, MPC, Double Negative, Fire Without Smoke, Stillers Studio and UNIT media

The 3 of us will teach you all aspects of compositing.

We are teaching Nuke because it is a node-based digital compositing application developed by the Foundry and It’s used for film, television, games and all aspects of post-production. It’s the industry standard for advanced Visual Effects and used by the world’s biggest facilities. Nuke is the software to learn if you want to work in the VFX industry.

The course itself will be pre-recorded, delivered weekly and it will run for approximately 15 to 20 weeks. All videos will be digitally and physically watermarked with the student’s name and IP.

There will be a live forum to discuss the topics covered each week where you can ask us questions in person, show "work in progress" and get to know your other colleagues. This is a key feature of this course and last year we build an incredible community in Discord.

Depending on your selected pledge, It can include weekly group calls, where you can share your scripts and take part in direct Q&As with your teachers, It can also include a full education license of the Foundry products, which can be fully upgraded to a full license for a fraction of the normal price, and, last but not least, we even have a pledge that it includes full showreel support and private calls.  (please read the pledge details for more information)

This is course is similar to a mentor experience, we will be available to answer any questions and help you along the way to become a compositor. Please keep in mind that the topics covered in this course can not be found on YouTube or any other free websites, our videos show the most professional and advanced techniques and reveal some of the secrets of compositing for a fraction of the price of a full course in VFX. This course is aimed at any artist, at any level, from Junior, Mid to Senior. No prior experience of Nuke is required but a basic understanding of computers is necessary and knowledge of creative tools like After Effects and Photoshop is very useful and recommended.

All the assets used in this course are from real productions, we will share them after you sign an NDA and some of these assets can even be used on your own showreels.

That is right! We will give you footage and CG renders so you can make your own showreel. (Please note that the amount of footage available for your showreel will depend on the extra stretch goals in Kickstarter. Extra Goals to be announced very soon)

A full course curriculum can be found on the Kickstarter page together with many student testimonials from last year. If you have any questions contact us.

I really believe that seniors artists like us, have a responsibility to share our knowledge so that the Visual effects community grows and becomes better, more creative, more efficient and above all more open. There shouldn't be any secrets in Visual Effects, we should all have the opportunity to learn from the best so we can become the best. I hope you can join us on this professional nuke course. We can’t wait to meet you!

Thank you so much for listening, until next time.

This is gold. If anyone still hesitates to take part in the course that Hugo is currently doing you should wait no more. I'm already noticing some techniques that are teached in detail in the course and we're not even in half way of it.

Paradox_Wyw

BTW, I told some of the compositors there I was taking this course and they were excited. A lot of them had heard about it and were curious about how it was. I told them it's been fantastic! Even though I'm just now catching up bc my workload hasn't let up since the year started.  If you do this again I'm sure some of the JR folks there would totally take it. Just being able to get an educational license of Nuke makes it worth it!

Fgracianava

I am a self-taught VFX Artist. Always, had a focus on becoming a Nuke compositor. Self-learning is hard cause there is no place so comprehensively teaching Nuke online. I have been pretty much-learning Nuke form any available online source including FxPHD, Lynda or Gnomon. Until I found Hugo Guerra's, Hugo’s Desk Presents: The complete Nuke Compositing course. Here he covered all the necessary fundamentals to advanced techniques. Besides, we had the chance to communicate with the trainers through Hugo's Desk forum. So much gratitude to you for making this amazing course and choosing to make it globally available.

Farhad Chowdhury

My experience on this course has been totally positive! This is the first time I’ve enrolled in an online course and it’s been totally worth it. As I was a Hugo’s Desk youtube channel subscriber, I knew that the quality of this course would be great and so it’s been. I’m so happy to be part of the team!

Gorka Paskual

Massive thanks to Hugo, Ricardo, Justin and Bjorn. The kickstarter course has been such a valuable resource for getting started as a Nuke compositor. I have particularly found the Skype calls and contact with the tutors makes such a difference in your learning. I am now working in a VFX studio and doing the course has 100% helped me get there! Thank you so much.

Lee

This course, is a amazing Course. I  thank Hugo, Ricardo, Justin, and Bjorn, for  all knowledge, and professional tips that you give us. I work with another tool, and didn´t knew anything of  nuke, but now, I understand nuke  deeper. The the teaching  is simple to understarnd but full of knowledge, and we see they are very experienced professionals that don´t be afraid to share is us large work experience they achieved, all over the years. Now, I can be a Nuke compositor. I recomend  you all to be on kickstarter couse, even if you are working in the area. Thank you all

Joao Baiao

The Nuke composting course of Hugo, Ricardo, Bjorn and Justin is a gold mine. They have been professionals working in the industry for decades. They know what thery are talking about. Also their different backgrounds allows them to explain the differences between the way to work in films, games or commercials. The course is very complete and give a full education about what compositing is, what are the tasks a compositor has to perform. The classes are interesting, easily understandable, the time format of each topic is perfect. It's a real satisfaction to be able to work on production shots. I really love the workshops, it helps build confidence and is like working as a junior! Furthermore, we have a really friendly atmosphere thanks to Discord, the forums and Skype. I recommend to pledge for the Skype calls, they really worth it. You can ask your questions live, show your work, ask for advices, have very interesting talks and get to know your teachers and mates better making this course kind of unique, not just a pre-recorded course without any interaction with the people. After this course and a lot of practice on the shots there is no reason you can't become a compositor.

Celine

The Hugo’s Desk compositing course has been an amazing experience, I’ve learned industry standard techniques and practices which have given me the confidence to pursue jobs as a professional compositor. The biggest problem when it comes to learning compositing is quality teaching, YouTube might be full of free tutorials but more often than not, the tutorials found there are not taught be industry professionals or with industry standard techniques, even worse they can even be teaching you the wrong way of doing things. If you’re like me and hundreds of other VFX graduates, you’ve probably got a degree in VFX from a university that honestly is not worth the paper it’s printed on, the truth is most academic lead courses these days are run by academic PhD’s with no industry experience. So, you might graduate with a first-class degree but still not be equipped with industry standard techniques to make it as a compositor in the industry. Hugo’s course helps fill in all the gaps left by academic course’s or by the tiny snippets of incomplete tutorials on YouTube, it not only prepares you but instils the skills necessary to succeed in this highly competitive industry. I wish this course was around while I was doing my degree, it would have made a huge difference but at least I can do it now. It’s 100% worth it.

Shaun

the Hugo's desk Class are amazing, i've being enjoyed a lot, they are very clear, all teacher are sharing the most advanced techniques of the industry, it help me to improve my skills and I'm a better professional after the hugo's desk course

Edubran

I have never had the most professional course, Surprising me,This class makes me think that what is a truly professional Compositing,Hugo is my favorite teacher, Compositing master,I followed him on youtube last year. I  thought it was an amazing learing process and I was lucky enough to join the course. Let me quickly transfer from AE to NUKE~ other teachers group Ricardo, Bjorn and Justin are very outstanding, helping me achieve the desired goal in Compositing , how to be a compositor Really capable, if Really recommend to learn real Compositing I highly recommend it, learn a lot of professional knowledge in the process, all the Compositing knowledge is to lay a good foundation for you, use the more correct way, Let me get into work faster and improve my ability. If I want to work elsewhere, I believe this class will let me get there faster. This course will allow me to get there faster. I really recommend this course. English is not my native language. If I don't write well, please forgive me. Haha

Risks and challenges

All of our teachers are highly committed to making sure that communication and transparency will be at the heart of this campaign. We will give you regular updates to everything happening in the development of this project.

If everything goes according to plan we expect to deliver the course in September 2019.

In case we have an overwhelming amount of people signing up for the campaign we may have to split the students into several groups and conduct multiple courses. These would be done "one group at the time". The students would be signed up in a "first served basis" according to the date of their pledge. We will assess the situation at the end of the campaign and make sure everyone is involved in the discussion.

As you may understand all of our teachers are professionals working in the VFX industry. They are not academic teachers. With this in mind, there might be some delays in the delivery of classes if a conflict in their professional schedules occurs. We will, of course, try to avoid this as much as we can and keep every student fully updated at all times.

All assets, videos, files or scripts in this course are copyrighted by Hugo Guerra, Hugo's Desk and VFX Vault, Ltd . They can only be used in your own personal showreel. If you need the files for your own classes or teaching engagements please contact Hugo’s Desk. To prevent any illegal sharing of files or videos from this course each student will have to sign an NDA disclosure agreement with Hugo's Desk and VFX Vault, Ltd .
