HUDWAY is bringing a truly revolutionary and long-awaited product to Kickstarter — a retrofit head-mounted HUD for everyone who rides with a helmet.
Meet HUDWAY Sight — a smart kit that mounts onto your regular helmet and brings information to the front of your eyes in an intuitive and natural way.
While HUD technology has already proven its efficiency for auto drivers, motorbike and bicycle riders have been lacking any solutions of its kind. Many companies approached this challenge, but most of the solutions required riders to buy an entirely new helmet instead of retrofitting what they currently own, which can be costly.
HUDWAY is not following the suit of reinventing the helmet. Instead, we’ve created something better: A smart HUD kit that you can mount onto YOUR helmet, so keep using your favorite helmet! HUDWAY Sight will upgrade your helmet into a futuristic and life-saving gadget.
Now, let us explain it all in detail. If anything remains unclear, please check out the FAQ section for this campaign or ask away in the comments.
Even though riders pride themselves on being more alert and aware of road conditions and traffic than other motorists, they have to use more cognitive resources to maintain control of the motorcycle compared to drivers of passenger vehicles.
Focused attention matters to bikers, even more than motorists, because the former are way more vulnerable to injury.
One of the statements in Motorcyclist's Safety Contract drafted by Motorcycle Safety Foundation reads:
HUD technology addresses what matters most to you when you’re riding — your attention to the immediate task and concentration on the road ahead.
HUDs are made to reduce distracted driving. They feature specific presentation of the information where only key things are displayed in an easy-to-grasp way. Distraction-free navigation is what HUDWAY focuses on while creating the software for our HUD solutions.
HUDWAY Sight’s lens is transparent so you can see clearly through it. Once your brain gets accustomed to the focus, it will comfortably perceive the image floating in front of your field of view whenever you look through the lens.
Like with every new gadget, the more you use it, the more you will tune in.
HUDWAY Sight is using a waveguide display developed by DigiLens, a Silicon Valley company who supplies technologies to many high tech and automotive companies.
Mass production will be handled by Young Optics, a company that excels at production of sophisticated optical components, based in Taiwan. They supply optics to market giants, such as Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Bosch, etc.
Simply put, a waveguide captures optic waves and makes them structured, or guided, in a specific way.
In relation to HUD technology, waveguides allow for setting the focus into infinity, and thus makes it easily perceivable by your eye and brain wherever you’re looking at. This feels very natural and allows your brain to simultaneously digest the information rendered by a waveguide device and what’s happening in the real world.
A small, lightweight, sophisticated piece of glass-like material replaces a complicated combination of projectors and optical elements that is otherwise required to create such infinite focus— and as such, opens up fantastic opportunities to apply it for everyday use (see suggested usage options below).
HUDWAY Sight is not a smart helmet— it’s a smart HUD kit that mounts onto a helmet you already own. It consists of two parts: A lens you attach to the helmet near your eyes, and a control block, or "brain" that mounts onto the back of the helmet and transmits the information to the lens.
Let's take a closer look at the components...
A waveguide display made of two layers of tempered glass glued together, in a thin aluminum full-rim frame. Fastens to the projector part using neodymium magnets. Enclosed with the kit will be a belt-mounted storage case with microfibre liner.
A miniature DLP projector with a LED light source, built-in ambient light sensor and digital video input. Powers on with individual button located on the outer side of projector body. Connects to the control block using a cable.
Adjustable mount that rotates/tilts along three axes for the lens to be set to any angle comfortable for particular user. Versatile clips allow for mounting the system to any helmet — either by clipping it on the shell edge and tightening the screws, or by removing one of the clips and sticking the other to the outer surface of the helmet.
Sticks to the back (or side) of the helmet using a strong adhesive. Includes a transmitter that 1) wirelessly receives information from your smartphone and 2) transmits it to the projector.
Supports streaming over BLE, Miracast and Apple AirPlay, and has a CVBS port to connect an external camera.
We're still working on how the control block will look, and here are the possible options. When finalised, its shape may be different from posted below:
Oh, and there is also a third component to this combo — your smartphone. This is what helps HUDWAY Sight make your helmet smart.
We have tested how the projector part will fit on main models of helmet brands popular with motorbikers, rally racers, bicycle and snowboard riders. It did fit really well!
On motorbike-like helmets, the projector part can be affixed on the plastic shell edge of the helmet near your right eye. On bicycle-like helmets, it needs to be sticked to the helmet shell above the temple.
Below you'll see how we see you can use the kit. Again, it's very versatile and can be used not only for riding, but for every other situation where you're wearing any sort of helmet and want quick access to the information.
An easy-to-grasp route view and concise directions on the next manoeuvre. Can be used in background for even less distraction.
Use voice commands to reply messages, navigate to work or home, or switch on a rearview camera. Voice control will only work when a wired or Bluetooth headset is connected — like EarPods, or a headset built in your helmet. Neither rearview camera, nor a headset is included in HUDWAY Sight kit.
Reply to incoming calls on the go — use your Bluetooth headset to do it without touching your phone.
You can view your riding stats in HUDWAY app, or integrate your own app with our HUDWAY SDK to display on the lens whatever you need: heart rate, pace, calories, etc.
Connect a night vision camera to be aware what's ahead of you when the visibility is limited and you can't see far enough in your headlights.
When a rearview camera is connected (not included in the kit), you can launch it with a voice command to get a quick overview of what's behind you.
Can be used in rally racing to view split time and get quickly alerted on critical issues, like oil pressure drop.
You can control your music as you ride in the HUDWAY app — while we'd still recommend that you pull over to perform any action that distracts you from navigation.

We’re launching it on Kickstarter again because we highly value your willingness to become the early adopters of emerging technologies, your feedback and your tremendous support which helps the companies like ours impact the world by creating useful and innovative products. We hope that it will make our driving and riding safer, smarter, and more convenient.
Here on Kickstarter we aim at collecting the first amount of orders to launch the first production run, and get the feedback on how to make the product better.
Support us now and welcome the future next spring. Thank you!

Risks and challenges
Building a new production line for waveguide optics assembly is a challenging adventure because this is a very high technology product and the quality requirements are extremely strict.
From our previous experience we know that however well the processed is planned out before the launch, once the production starts there may arise the circumstances that will influence the whole production cycle. We pledge that we will do our best to keep you informed on such events and to minimise the delays to as little as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
