"I think artists are born with a certain vocabulary in their heads. You follow it...or you get a chance to follow it...you're lucky." - James Hubbell
It's hard to know who's luckier — James Hubbell — who's lived a life of artistic creativity and expression that few ever achieve — or the rest of us who've had the opportunity to experience his work and be inspired by the beauty and wonder of his singular genius. "Between Heaven and Earth" is a new film that provides an intimate portrait of the artist and his lifelong journey of using art to understand his life, and build the world he wants to live in.
Despite a nomadic childhood and inherent shyness, Hubbell has been driven to have a conversation with the world, using his art and his architecture to give flight to his deepest beliefs. His is a quiet, yet compelling voice which shows us that power has nothing to do with how old you are, or how big you are, or how strong you are, that creativity transcends everything.
Journey with us around California and beyond — as we learn the stories behind some of Hubbell's most iconic works. Come to a deeper understanding — through the words of scholars, friends, and the artist himself — about his art, his motivation, and his inspiring life.
But let's cut to the chase. You want to know about the rewards!
A lot has happened since the time we saw James Hubbell on film. His many new accomplishments include the expansion of his Ilan-Lael home and building more parks around the Pacific in places like — like China, South Korea, the Philippines and Taiwan. And then there are the events that showed up uninvited....the devastating Cedar Fire, Parkinson's Disease, and the challenges of aging we all must face. But through it all, it is the art that keeps him relevant in new installations like the Tides Room at Ilan-lael, and in classics like The Sea Ranch Chapel and The Palace Doors of Abu Dhabi.
The cameras have been rolling throughout James' life. It is rare to find a life so well documented in film — the public and private moments, along with many never-before-seen images we've combed from photos and scrapbooks. Interest in his work has never been greater, yet he remains a mystery to many. Learn about the man, his life, and the experiences that have made him one of the great creators of our time. Our new film will be featured on public television and at film festivals. This is not wishful thinking. Your pledge will support a film that people are going to see!
Why a Kickstarter campaign?
We're experienced television professionals who have taken on the majority of expenses of making this movie to date. And while there have been helpful funders along the way, we're asking for your support to get us over the finish line.
Time is of the essence. Jim Hubbell is 87 years old, and while age and illness have slowed him, his creative power remains strong. His art speaks to a world that is searching for beauty and humanity. His life is a love letter to the natural world that nurtured and inspired him. His legacy touches friends and strangers alike every day. This is NOT a vanity project. It's the story of a man who has used art and nature to make sense of life...and whose life holds powerful lessons for us all.
