EXPEDITION TO R'LYEH
Join us for an Expedition to R'lyeh! This year's rewards and theme center around a secret return trip to the island by the Miskatonic University's Explorers Club. Live the excitement with Kickstarter exclusives like the Expedition Log Book, the map of the island (with landmarks named after several of the explorers... that could be you!), a box of sculpted artifacts, and show your allegiance with our official MU Explorers Club lapel pins and shirts, or be one of the cultists in our limited edition winged Cthulhu lapel pins and shirts. Either way, be sure to grab the goods you want now because most won't be available outside this Kickstarter.
Here's the run down on how to add-on to your reward level. Find the add-on you want, then increase your pledge by the amount shown, without changing the Reward Level you've chosen (in other words, if you are pledged at the Supporter T-shirt level ($25), but want to add the Expedition Kit (a $35 add-on), simply increase your pledge to $60 ($25 + $35) while keeping the Supporter T-shirt level selected. At the end of the campaign, we'll send you a survey to find out what you added on, sizes, designs, etc.
Add-Ons that require shipping may only be added to Reward Levels $10 and above.
20 YEARS OF H.P. LOVECRAFT IN PORTLAND, OR
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival® in Portland, OR! We invite you to join us for this celebration of film, literature, and art. Much of our programming is still being confirmed. Expect big announcements soon!
We'll be presenting the Howie Award to our Guest of Honor Charles Stross (the Laundry Files), a special anniversary screening of the HPLHS's Call of Cthulhu, a catered 1930s Speakeasy VIP event on Thursday, Oct. 1, plus a pre-party at Portland's own original Lovecraft bar! Add to that the usual over-full weekend of amazing films, panel discussions, author readings, art competitions, vendors, and live performances, and you've got a weekend of unique experiences and memories.
FOR EYES ONLY
July 6 1935, Arkham, MA - Calling All Explorers! Miskatonic University Professors William Dyer and Henry Armitage are mounting expedition to mysterious island in the South Pacific! They have taken what they learned from 2nd Mate Johansen's account of his encounter with the Alert, and using key documents from the Miskatonic University's rare books room, have calculated when the next rising of the mysterious island will occur, and how to safely explore it without triggering the vault doors that hold the creature, Cthulhu, in his slumberous prison. WARNING! We have discovered evidence of spies among the Explorers Club membership. Be on guard!
We reached our initial funding goal in about 36 hours, which is stupendous! Thank you! So, why keep contributing and sharing? Our initial goal was designed to cover our most basic upfront expenses, but not much else. Also, keep in mind that we don't "keep" all the money that has been pledged. After Kickstarter takes a percentage and we're charged for credit card processing (all together close to 10% off the top), we then use a portion of the funds to create all the rewards, which can cost us 30-50% depending on the particular reward item - the rest goes into the Festival. So, there's still a long way to go. You can help us get there by continuing to share this campaign with your friends and family, anywhere in the world, regardless of their ability to attend the fest. Every T-shirt we sell to someone across the country (or cosmos) will enhance the festival, and also make some of the rewards themselves cooler.
You can support our Kickstarter whether you just want the Exclusive stuff we're making, or you plan on attending. We have levels for both! Many levels feature Lovecraftian goodies like t-shirts, sculptures, prints, and other rewards that are exclusive to our Kickstarter.
ATTEND Levels that include a 3-day pass will include perks, like front of the line privileges on opening night, priority entry at events that have limited seating, and other extras that will unlock with stretch goals.
VIP - SPEAKEASY PARTY at Circa 33 is on Thursday, October 1st from 5-8 pm for the first session and 8-11pm for the second session (your session depends on the level you pledged at). Although Prohibition was repealed in 1933, speakeasies and supper clubs remained popular for long after. At Circa 33, you'll gain entry to the backroom through a secret locked bookshelf. (Tell the bartender the secret password and you'll receive the code!) Enjoy a finely crafted cocktail, local microbrew, and tasty hors d'oeuvres while you mingle with your fellow VIP backers, Guest of Honor Charles Stross, and other select guests. A ticket for this event is included in all VIP levels, Experience levels, and All Access levels. *Circa 33 is located at 3348 SE Belmont Ave.
3-DAY PASSES - A full 3-day pass to the festival comes at the $95 level and above (look for "3-Day Pass" in the reward level description). This gives you access to all main programming in our three auditoriums and the E.O.D. Center for the duration of the festival. Regular passes will also go on sale after the Kickstarter, however, the only way to get the special Miskatonic U Explorers Club and Winged Cthulhu lapel pins, limited edition T-shirts, and other limited edition items is by reserving your ticket through this Kickstarter! Support us now and get something unique that you can wear to show others your love for the event.
SOUVENIR TICKET - Each 3-day pass in our backer reward levels comes with a souvenir ticket! This will not be available outside the Kickstarter. This gives you access to the festival and also becomes your badge. This will also help us identify you as a 3-Day pass holder and let others see that you're one of the chosen (you backed this Kickstarter).
BREAKOUT SESSION WITH JEFFREY COMBS! - Jeffrey Combs starred in at least 9 films based on Lovecraft stories, and now 10 lucky backers will get to spend an hour chatting about whatever they want to with this most prolific Lovecraftian actor! We will randomly select 5 backers from the 3-Day Pass levels and 5 backers from the VIP levels to be in this breakout session.
BREAKOUT SESSION WITH CHARLES STROSS! - Charles Stross is coming all the way from Scotland to drink our Portland beer! (And we're presenting him with an award.) 10 lucky backers will get to spend an hour chatting about whatever they want to with our Guest of Honor! We will randomly select 5 backers from the 3-Day Pass levels and 5 backers from the VIP levels to be in this breakout session.
BREAKOUT SESSION WITH ADAM SCOTT GLANCY! - Have you heard any of Glancy's classic festival stories? The Dog Head? The Christmas Present? Rumor has it, he has a few new ones. Be the first to hear it straight from the master's mouth. We call it a breakout session, but it could just as well be called story hour with Scott. You'll be entertained, we promise! 10 backers will be randomly chosen from any level that includes a 3-Day pass.
LAPEL PINS - 2 DESIGNS!
This year we have TWO different lapel pin designs: the Miskatonic University Explorers Club pin in silver, gold and color fill details, and the Winged Cthulhu pin in antique copper. All Attendee levels, VIP levels, Experience levels, and The Searchers After Horror, Shadow Out of Time, and Traveler Between the Stars levels will get to choose which design they prefer. For levels that already include one pin, you can UPGRADE to both by adding $17 to your pledge. All Access levels will receive both pins. (see right column for details). These are being produced exclusively for attendees (including the "there in spirit" levels) and are not available separately or outside the Kickstarter.
LIMITED EDITION SHIRTS
SUPPORTER TEES – 2 DESIGNS! Both the MU Explorers Club and the Winged Cthulhu designs (designed and printed by Sigh Co. Graphics) are only available to backers. The MU Explorer's Club design features the essential sextant and a silver key with elder sign embellishment. The School's monogram is boldly emblazoned in the center. The MUEC logo embodies the principles that exploration and discovery of the world are the keys to security and is printed on a charcoal gray shirt. The Winged Cthulhu design features a representation of Cthulhu, wings outstretched and crowned by the eye of Azathoth from the Squidgate Sigil. This emblem, worn by the elite sect of Cthulhu cultists that have infiltrated the MUEC for the purpose of awakening Cthulhu and liberating him from his slumbering sepulchre, strikes a sense of unease and foreboding in all who gaze upon it, and is printed on a black shirt.
This is available on both men's (S-5XL) and women's (S-2XL) style shirts (we'll contact you for size and style when the campaign ends). Printed on high quality 100% (preshrunk) cotton, a t-shirt is included at many levels, but can also be added to any level ($10 or above) that doesn't include it for $25.
SUPPORTER WORK SHIRT OR HOODIE Get a work shirt or full zip hooded sweatshirt of your choice of the MU Explorers Club or Winged Cthulhu design for $50. (The design is printed on the back of the work shirt and hoodie.) Work shirt is short-sleeved, black (for the Winged Cthulhu) or charcoal gray (for the Miskatonic U. Explorers Club), 65% polyester/35% cotton. Hoodie is 50% cotton/50% polyester. If your reward already includes the t-shirt, you can upgrade to a work shirt or hoodie by adding $25 to your pledge.
TAKE A TRIP BACK IN TIME
MESSAGES FROM BEYOND: Find yourself in the pages of the DAILY LURKER, a 1930s style newspaper that we are creating to commemorate the event. Printed on real newsprint and containing faux articles, historic photos, fiction, comics, film and programming information, and content from our contributors. You can appear in the year 1935, without all the mental agony that comes with a Yithian brain swap.
Or maybe you'd like something a little more morbid? Write your own (or your alter ego's, or maybe your Call of Cthulhu® character's) fantasy obituary and supply a photo (period dress, monster costumes, etc., are encouraged) to take your place among the real and fictional individuals who passed in 1935 at our IN THE VAULT - OBITUARY level!
ALMOST SQUAMOUS: You're front page news! We can't promise it will be pretty, but it might make you infamous. You'll be the main subject of a front page mythos-related news story, written by Peter Rawlik, Daily Lurker special correspondent and author of Re-Animators and The Weird Company. This comes with a 3-Day pass and all sorts of other goodies, check out the full description in the side bar.
EXPEDITION KIT CONTENTS
NEW! The Expedition Kit now contains your choice of the Miskatonic University Explorers Club embroidered patch, or the Winged Cthulhu embroidered patch. Keep sharing our campaign! When we get to 340 backers, we'll put the kit in a leather-like zippered bag, stamped with the MUEC logo!
Relive the expedition with the illustrated Log Book, Survey Map of the Island, and a rubbing of the vault inscription. The Expedition Kit can be added to any level ($10 or above) for $35.
THE LOG BOOK This limited edition book is the jewel in the crown and contains an account of the expedition, compiled from some of our top explorers, with numerous illustrations, notes, equipment manifests, and diary entries. Piece together the full story of the club's discovery of the meaning of the Silver Key, the hidden and horrible secrets of the land mass itself, and live the journey to this accursed island in a first person account. Portions written by A. Scott Glancy, with sketches by Heather Hudson, John Donald Carlucci, Paul Komoda, Mike Dubisch, Nick Gucker, Ann S. Koi, Greg Duthie, and others. This is a pocket-sized one-of-a-kind art book and fictional chronicle, with content by some of today's best Mythos artists and world-builders - don't leave this Kickstarter without it.
SURVEY MAP OF THE ISLAND Fairchild-2Ws are equipped for aerial photography. After they made several passes, we were able to compile the images. This 12x18 reproduction of the survey map is the final result of what we believe to be the best, most accurate map of the island. Top 10 Backers will have geographical landmarks named after them, and will get added to the map!
VAULT INSCRIPTION RUBBING A section of the vault jamb was found lying several yards away from the vault door. We have made rubbings of this inscription and are offering them exclusively as part of the expedition kit.
MU EXPLORERS CLUB or WINGED CTHULHU PATCH - UNLOCKED! The Kit now includes your choice of an MU Explorers Club or Winged Cthulhu embroidered patch!
NEW! Not getting the R'lyeh Expedition Kit, but still want a patch? Or want to add an extra? You can add one of these patches to any level (Daily Lurker level or above) for $8, or both for $15.
Artists who have committed their sanity-shattering visions to paper, canvas, and clay have enhanced and furthered conceptions of the mythos and madness. From Richard Upton Pickman to Henry Wilcox, art is a central theme in Lovecraft's fiction. Add to your own Pickman's Gallery with these visions of madness from two of the most innovative Lovecraftian artists of today.
ARTIFACT BOX This limited edition set of 3 small, exquisite idols, masterfully sculpted by Ann S. Koi, is based on artifacts brought back by our brave explorers. Each one has been painstakingly re-created in sturdy resin, and is packed carefully in a wooden box to allow you to enjoy this bit of history in your own home. (more photos coming soon!)
Included at the Cryptic Design level, VIP Yog-Sothoth level, Traveler From Beyond the Stars, and All Access levels and above. The Artifact Box can be added to any level ($10 and above) for $75.
WOODCUT PRINT Comets, Keys, Stars, Books, Skulls, and Doom: all important elements of arcane medieval woodcuts! Liv Rainey-Smith has created another fantastic print just for us. We tried to imagine what documents and texts Dyer and Armitage might have found nestled in the Miskatonic rare books room, and "Signum Advenit" embodies the kind of illustration that would have proved to be key for their calculations in safely navigating the island where ancient cyclopean R'lyeh stands.
This is an actual print, hand-pulled from an inked wood block, carved by the artist. The print is 8"x 6" on a 10"x 8" sheet. This limited edition print is only available through this Kickstarter. Included at the Cryptic Design level, VIP Yog-Sothoth level, Traveler From Beyond the Stars, and All Access levels and above. "Signum Advenit" can be added to any level ($10 and above) for $70.
DRINK TO THE EXPEDITION
(or against it) with these individually etched pint and shot glasses. Each glass is individually etched by exceptional glass artisan Robert of Drink With The Living Dead (these are NOT mass-produced). Each glass features either the Miskatonic University Explorers Club design or an original Cthulhu design for their dastardly Cultist counterparts, and each will be carefully packed for shipping. Like most of our rewards, we will only be making the number that are pledged for, and they will not be for sale later.
For the readers: Challenge From Beyond 2015 Book & Strange Aeons Souvenir issue
In 1935, H.P. Lovecraft wrote a famous round robin story with 4 of his author friends, called "The Challenge From Beyond." When C.L. Moore, A Merritt, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and Frank Belknap Long were finished, they had a singular plot written in each of their distinct styles.
This year, we asked Nadia Bulkin, Lee Zumpe, S. J. Chambers, Tim Pratt, Gemma Files, Don Webb, and Michael Cisco to participate in "The Challenge From Beyond 2015.” The finished story will be published in a special edition souvenir book. You can add on the "Challenge From Beyond 2015" by increasing your pledge by $8. A complimentary copy is included in many of the higher levels.
At 2000 Facebook shares, we unlocked Strange Aeons #18, an exclusive issue of the excellent Lovecraftian magazine, this time focussed squarely on the 20th Anniversary H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon. It will feature interviews with guests, fiction, art, and spotlights on special programming. It's the perfect companion to help you thoroughly enjoy this year's fest. Get yours by adding $10 to your pledge.
THE TAINTED INKWELL
H.P. Lovecraft was all about spreading his mythos around, inviting his author friends to use his otherworldy entities and lore, and encouraging them to take part in adding to his mythology. This created a collection of shared universe fiction by several of his contemporaries, and is a legacy that continues today as more writers contribute to his oeuvre.
Pledge at this level and you can take your place among the stars as you become a character in a short story by Molly Tanzer, commissioned specifically for this festival and printed in the Daily Lurker. Molly Tanzer, best known for A Pretty Mouth, and Vermillion, creates an effortless blend of Lovecraftian themes, Steampunk aesthetics, and Western grit in her work.
Not every member of the R'lyeh expedition is an intrepid explorer or scholar of forbidden lore- enter Neville Culloden-Briar, hapless diarist and dramaturgist... in a bit over his head. Backers at this level will receive a dossier of curious documents and images, from the strange and sinister collection of occultist J. Sheridan Osborne*. Backers will also be mentioned (and dispatched gorily) in the forthcoming experimental novel "Osborne's Pocket Grimoire Vol. 5", and receive of copy of that novel upon release next spring.
*Paranormal researcher J. Sheridan Osborne died under shady circumstances. Before his demise, he parceled out his notes in Warholesque time bombs to a few select souls.
Jess Gulbranson, local Portland bizarro fiction author, takes pop culture, philosophy, sci-fi, music, horror, and anything else that strikes a chord in his wicked little brain, and whips it into a tasty concoction topped with a bit of Lovecraftian paranoia.
THE HORROR IN THE PLAY
The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society thrilled the Lovecraftian world with their award winning film adaptations of “The Call of Cthulhu” and “The Whisperer in Darkness.”
The Call of Cthulhu is considered THE essential Lovecraft adaptation, and premiered 10 years ago! In honor of its 10th Anniversary, we will be recreating an evening at a 1930s movie palace with the talents of Sean Branney and Andrew Leman, and a collection of period entertainments to immerse the audience in the proper atmosphere for this special screening of the film. You have the opportunity to participate in this special presentation on the festival's main stage!
GAMING WITH THE GODS
Adam Scott Glancy will be killing your character in this year's Call of Cthulhu Game, but wait! There's more! This game will take place at the Festival Founder's home (Andrew Migliore) on Friday, October 2nd! As you play your scenario in the comfort of his gaming den, you'll be surrounded by vintage movie posters, games, and other movie memorabilia. If there is time after your game, Andrew may even break out some films or clips from years past! The game will be on Friday, October 2nd starting at 11 am and running until your characters are dead or insane, so you get to play in an epic game and not miss any films!
This level also includes a full 3-Day festival pass, Speakeasy VIP Party, limited edition lapel pin and T-shirt (your choice of design), the Expedition Kit, and the digital download of digital art and exclusive audio tracks.

Risks and challenges
If we reach our goal, we'll have the resources to expand the programming, fly out more guests, and provide an even more amazing experience. If we don't reach our goal, we will have to scale back our grand plans. This will be our 7th festival as directors, so we are comfortable with all the processes that make up the festival. Also, this is our 4th Kickstarter, and the first three were very successful, so we do not anticipate any problems with fulfillment of rewards, since we're pretty used to the process now.
Once successfully funded, we will need to start the process of printing T-shirts, producing the lapel pins and other physical rewards. These jobs have already been arranged and are just waiting for us to greenlight them at the end of our Kickstarter project. We expect this to take no longer than 30 days from the completion of the Kickstarter. With successful funding, we will also be able to begin confirming special events and guest bookings, as well as book additional films that provide historical perspective on Cosmic Horror in Cinema. As a backer, you will be kept in the loop on all these developments leading up to the festival, so that you can be sure that we are fulfilling our end of the bargain.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
