The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon was founded in 1995, and is the longest continuously running Lovecraftian event in the world. Over 18 years, the festival has grown from being a film festival to a full fledged 3-day convention that brings together filmmakers, authors, artists, and other creators, for a meeting of minds that you won't find at any other event. The 18th Annual festival will take place May 3-5, 2013 at Portland's historic Hollywood Theatre.
To maintain the awesome scope of this event, we need your help. Normally the upfront costs of the festival come out of our pockets and are supplemented by corporate sponsorships. The cost of putting on the festival has gone way up, and the poor economy has caused companies to spend less money with niche events like ours. This situation could threaten the future of the festival and in the short term necessitate a much smaller event, but Kickstarter provides a way for you to come together with other members of the Lovecraft community to actively invest in the longevity of the festival while reaping unique benefits that we have created just for you.
Want to attend? Pledge at any ATTEND, VIP, or ALL ACCESS reward levels to the right. All of those come with festival entry (and exclusives you can't get if you buy tickets later).
Can't attend, but want to contribute? Get all main swag shipped to you at the $100 SHADOWS OUT OF TIME level. Reward levels between $10 and $75 also include various items shipped to you.

This will be available on both men's and women's style shirts (we'll contact you for size and style). The top 9 backers of this campaign will have their initials incorporated in the design along with their astrological symbol. Work shirt is short-sleeved black 65% polyester/35% cotton, Hoodie is black 90% cotton/10% polyester.
MESSAGES FROM BEYOND: Find yourself in the pages of the DAILY LURKER, a 1930s style newspaper that we are creating to commemorate the event. Printed on real newsprint and containing faux articles and historic photos, as well as fiction and content from our contributors. You can appear in the year 1933, without all the mental agony that comes with a Yithian brain swap.
Or maybe you'd like something a little more morbid? Write your own (or your alter ego's, or maybe your Call of Cthulhu® character's) fantasy obituary and supply a photo (period dress, monster costumes, etc., are encouraged) to take your place among the real and fictional individuals who passed in 1933 at our IN THE VAULT - OBITUARY level!
ALMOST SQUAMOUS: You're front page news! We can't promise it will be pretty, but it might make you infamous. You'll be the main subject of a front page mythos-related news story, written by Cody Goodfellow, Daily Lurker special correspondent and author of “Radiant Dawn” and “All Monster Action”. This comes with all sorts of other goodies, check out the full description in the side bar.
Where would the Mythos be without the artists who have dared to look Beyond and bring back their sanity-shattering visions to show us the true meaning of reality? From Richard Upton Pickman to Henry Wilcox, art is a central theme in Lovecraft's fiction. Turn your home into Pickman's Gallery with these visions of madness from the most innovative Lovecraftian artists of today.
At the Arcane Arts level, as well as the Servitor of The Outer Gods, Thousand Masks, and Great Old Ones levels, you can take home a special limited edition Wood block print from Liv Rainey-Smith, whose explorations of Medieval wood block printing techniques produces haunting images that would be at home in the Necronomicon. This is not a digital reproduction, but an actual print, hand-pulled from an inked wood block, carved by the artist. Liv is a festival regular and long-time vendor in the Mall of Cthulhu, so when we asked her to create a print and do a special edition run just for us, we were thrilled when she accepted! Here's a sneak preview of her "Cthulandia."
Also at the Arcane Arts level, as well as at the VIP level and above, you will receive the official 2013 festival poster, created by Nick Gucker, the winner of last year's Pickman's Apprentice live art competition.
ART PACK BY MIKE DUBISCH: Those who partake of our The Tainted (Ink) Well, Horror in the Play, Almost Squamous, and Thousand Masks levels, will receive a piece of original art by Mike Dubisch. Mike is also a long-time participant in the festival, and will be back this year to try to unthrone Nick Gucker in the Pickman's Apprentice competition. The illustrator of your nightmares, as well as books like "Morbid Curiosity," "Weirdling," and "Flesh Crawlers" (which are also included in the art pack), Mike Dubisch channels terrifying visions of a dimly lit underworld, inscribed on black paper in the glowing hues of subterranean N'Kai.
H.P. Lovecraft invited his author friends to use his otherworldy entities and lore, and even encouraged them to take part in adding to his mythology. This created a collection of shared universe fiction by several of his contemporaries, and is a legacy that continues today as more writers contribute to his oeuvre.
Joe S. Pulver, Sr., is one of the modern Lovecraft Circle's most respected and prolific authors. His works incorporate Lovecraft's mythology as well as taking great inspiration from Robert W. Chambers (who also inspired Lovecraft) and his masterwork The King In Yellow.
You can take a place among the stars as you become a character in a short story by Joe, commissioned specifically for this festival, which will be published in the Daily Lurker and possibly included in one of his future collections.
The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society thrilled the Lovecraftian world with their award winning film adaptations of “Call of Cthulhu” and “The Whisperer in Darkness.” However, Sean Branney and Andrew Leman have been bringing the old gent's stories to life for over 20 years through live role playing games, music, and now 1930s style radio plays. Their series of Dark Adventure Radio Plays dramatize Lovecraft's fiction with stirring voice acting, musical scores, and atmospheric special effects.
You have the opportunity to participate in the walk-on role of a lifetime in this year's LIVE performance of a Dark Adventure Radio Theater production on the festival's main stage!
Not content to merely watch films from the comfort of a theater seat? Step through to the other side and be a star (spawn) on the festival screen! Send us your photo and we will burn your image into the retinas of all who dare view our shunned shorts by including you in a festival bumper. You will also consult with the Festival Directors to help them choose the Best Short Film for our traditional awards ceremony on Sunday night. Take some of the madness home with you with signed copies of Thomas Nicol's “Window Into Time” DVD featuring “Bedtime for Timmy”, Robert Cappelletto's award winning “Pickman's Muse”, and the Weird Tales Collection featuring Aaron Vanek's “The Yellow Sign.”
Tom Gliserman, Will Severin, and Mary Jane Hansen, filmmakers of the feature film "The Thing on the Doorstep" have generously offered 6 pieces of prop art, which we are adding to this level! Check out our update for more details!
Maybe you've heard of this game “The Call of Cthulhu®”? While many Lovecraft fans were introduced to the Master of cosmic horror through books, films, and even art, a vast horde were introduced through a gateway drug known as role playing games. Early editions of Dungeons & Dragons referenced the Cthulhu Mythos, and in 1981 Chaosium released The Call of Cthulhu®, written by legendary game designer Sandy Petersen. In 1997, Adam Scott Glancy, Dennis Detwiller, and John Tynes created the Delta Green contemporary setting for The Call of Cthulhu® game, bringing a modern para-military spin to the investigation of the world's dark secrets. You now have the opportunity to play with the masters!
Reserve your seat at the table for a scenario lead by either Sandy Petersen (limit 2) or Adam Scott Glancy (limit 5). You can specify your preferred storyteller, but it's first come first served (and no backsies if you don't get your pick. Both games will be legendary!). This level also includes a full 3-Day festival pass, VIP party ticket (added to this level on 2/27 to thank our backers for getting us to almost 60% funded in only one week), limited edition Squidgate Sigil T-shirt, gold-level lapel pin, signed Lurker in The Lobby book, personal use Cristoforo font (more info on the font below), the official Festival poster with art by Nick Gucker, and the digital download of digital art and exclusive audio tracks.
More than a mortal, not quite a god; still a good place to be! From out of the writhing masses, your voice will be heard! Your VIP treatment includes a vote for Best Short Film, 3-day pass, top-level lapel pin, Green Room access, VIP Party, t-shirt, signed festival poster, signed Lurker in the Lobby, Cthulhu Mythos Bibliography & Concordance, download pack, Liv Rainey-Smith woodblock print, commercial use Cristoforo Font (regular, italic, symbols), message in the Daily Lurker, download of the "Die Farbe" soundtrack, a signed copy of "Pickman's Muse" and "Window Into Time" DVDs. We've passed our initial goal! Thanks for your support in getting us this far! This means we'll be able to cover many of our upfront expenses and put on another great show this year. However, there's still more we can do to make this year's festival truly epic. Help us unlock these big plans by spreading the word about our Kickstarter!

Risks and challenges
If we reach our goal, we'll have the resources to expand the programming, fly out more guests, and provide an even more amazing experience. If we don't reach our goal, we will have to scale back our grand plans. This will be our third festival as directors, so we are comfortable with all the processes that make up the festival.
Once successfully funded, we will need to start the process of printing T-shirts, producing the lapel pins and other physical rewards. These jobs have already been arranged and are just waiting for us to greenlight them at the end of our Kickstarter project. We expect this to take no longer than 30 days from the completion of the Kickstarter. With successful funding, we will also be able to begin planning special events and guest bookings, as well as book additional films that provide historical perspective on Cosmic Horror in Cinema. As a backer, you will be kept in the loop on all these developments leading up to the festival, so that you can be sure that we are fulfilling our end of the bargain.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
