Elder Thing sculpture This is a replica of the Elder Thing balustrade finial that Walter Gilman pulled out of his "dream" in Lovecraft's "Dreams in The Witch House." Sculpted, cast, and hand-painted by Ann S. Koi of Catalyst Studios. Included at "Cryptic Designs Figurine," "3-Day Figurine," "VIP Figurine," "Traveler in the 4th Dimension," "VIP Yog-Sothoth," all "Experience" levels at $300 and above, and all "All Access" levels. Kickstarter Exclusive!
Challenge From Beyond 2014 Book 8 modern Lovecraftian authors - Tanzer, Pulver, Lockhart, Pugmire, Mamatas, Moreno-Garcia, Goodfellow, and Rawlik - wrote a round-robin story. Internal art is by Allen K. (Artist Guest of Honor) and Nick "The Hat" Gucker, and the beautiful cover art is by the astounding Mike Dubisch. Included at the "Searchers After Horror," "Traveler in the 4th Dimension," "VIP Yog-Sothoth," many "Experience" levels, and all "All Access" levels.
"Sign!" Genuine Woodcut print This is printed using a hand-carved wooden block, then hand-colored with genuine mineral pigments, by Xylographic artist Liv Rainey-Smith. Included at the "Cryptic Designs Xylograph," "3-Day Xylograph," "VIP Xylograph," "Traveler in the 4th Dimension," "VIP Yog-Sothoth," and all "All Access" levels. Kickstarter Exclusive!
"Seal of Nyarlathotep" T-shirts, Work shirts, and Hoodies These are included at many levels, please check reward level descriptions. You may add a (or add another) T-shirt or Babydoll tee to any level for $25, or a Work shirt or Hoodie for $50. Any level that already contains a T-shirt can be upgraded to a Work shirt or Hoodie by adding $25. Kickstarter Exclusive!
HOW DO I ADD OR UPGRADE AN ITEM? It's simple. Kickstarter will let you pledge any amount for any reward level (as long as the amount is higher than the reward level amount). So, if you've already made a pledge, just click the blue "Manage My Pledge" button in the upper right of this page. Then raise your pledge by the amount specified for the add-on you desire. For example, if you are at the $25 T-shirt level, you may add an Elder Thing sculpture ($65) and a Challenge From Beyond 2014 book ($12) by adding $77 to your pledge, but keeping the same T-shirt reward level. That way, you'll get the T-shirt (and extras), the sculpture, and the book mailed to you. It's that easy!
The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon was founded in 1995 by Andrew Migliore, and is the longest continuously running Lovecraftian event in the world. It is both a film festival and 3-day convention that brings together filmmakers, authors, artists, and other creators, for a meeting of minds that you won't find elsewhere. The 19th Annual festival takes place April 11-13 at Portland's historic Hollywood Theatre.
We discovered last year that all the unique rewards, experiences, and additions to the festival made it more fun for everyone, not just backers, so we're turning to Kickstarter again to help cover some of our upfront costs and raise the bar even higher. Theater and venue rental, film exhibition licenses, and hosting costs are all expenses we will have each year, but we know that with your support, we can continue to provide a place for our community to come together and lose sanity points while having a blast!
A HUGE THANK YOU!
We reached our initial funding goal in record time, but we still have more up our sleeve! Every dollar over our initial funding goal will be going towards bringing you more guests and events to make the festival even more fun. As promised, here are the stretch goals! As we reach each goal, we will reveal the next. Check our updates for a more in-depth look at each stretch goal.
Stretch Goal #1 Unlocked: We're doing it! You guys will be invited to a special screening party at The Lovecraft Bar in Portland, OR, on March 2nd. Pencil it in on your calendar and stay tuned for more details!
Stretch Goal #2 Unlocked: Joe S. Pulver will join us all the way from Berlin to lead us through the gates to Carcosa and back! A lucky (?) backer will have a meal with the Beast.
Stretch Goal #3 Unlocked: Robert M. Price will join us to host a live "The Lovecraft Geek" show and answer all your Lovecraftian questions. As the representative of The Cult of Cthulhu, we also expect him to start some trouble with The Temple of Yog-Sothoth.
Stretch Goal #4 Unlocked: We will produce a DVD compilation of several of the best films shown at the upcoming 2014 Festival. One copy of this DVD will be included at the "Travler in The 4th Dimension," "VIP Yog-Sothoth Package," all "Experience" levels, and all "All Access" levels. Backers at other levels may add it to their rewards by adding $14 to their pledge (add an extra $12 for shipping outside the USA).
Lost Strange Aeons issue unlocked: The lost Strange Aeons #13 fiction issue can now be added to any level for only $10. Do this by clicking the button to modify your pledge, and add $10 to the amount - you do not need to choose a different reward level. This is a backer-only item that will not be available after the Kickstarter, so raise your pledge by $10 to make sure you get one.
Put a Cthulhu On It unlocked: All backers at a level that includes a VIP ticket will now also receive a free CthulhuCon tote bag with art by Allen K.
Seal of Nyarlathotep Book Plates unlocked: All backers at the $10 Daily Lurker level and above will now receive 2 complimentary "Seal of Nyarlathotep" book plates.
Every little bit helps. The $5 level (and above) gets you a download package containing art and exclusive audio tracks by Mars Homeworld, Allen K, and 4 sampler tracks from Out of the Aeons: Music From a New Dark Age, vol 1.
VIP PARTY & ART RECEPTION will take place on Friday, April 11, from 5-6:30 pm at the E.O.D. Center*, and is the perfect opportunity to pick up your swag bag, be the first to see the Lovecraftian Art Show, browse Artist Alley, and have one on one conversations with the guests and creators who make this festival so unique! A Ticket for this event is included at VIP levels, Experience levels and All Access levels.
*The EOD Center aka the Hollywood Senior Center is our overflow venue, and is located steps away from the Hollywood Theatre.
3-DAY PASSES - A full 3-day pass to the festival comes at the $90 level and above (look for "3-Day Pass" in the reward level description). This gives you access to all main programming in our three auditoriums and the E.O.D. Center for the duration of the festival. Passes will also go on sale after the Kickstarter, however, the only way to get the special lapel pin, Squidgate Scarab T-shirt, and other limited edition items is by reserving your ticket through this Kickstarter! Support us now and get something unique that you can wear to the festival to show others your love for the event.
SOUVENIR TICKET - Each 3-day pass in our backer reward levels comes with the proverbial golden ticket! This will not be available outside the Kickstarter. This gives you access to the festival and also becomes your badge. This will also help us identify you as a 3-Day pass holder and let others see that you're one of the chosen (you backed this Kickstarter).
SUPPORTER LAPEL PIN - This lapel pin features this year's distinctive Squidgate Scarab, and is available in a lush gold and enamel finish for all Attendee levels, VIP levels, Experience levels and All Access levels (see right column for details), and will be produced by Arkham Bazaar. This is a special item for attendees only (including two "there in spirit" levels) and will not be available separately or outside the Kickstarter.
SUPPORTER TEE Our Squidgate Scarab t-shirt design (designed and printed by Sigh Co. Graphics) is only available to backers (not for sale outside the Kickstarter). According to the designer, "This symbol may be the legendary Seal of Nyarlathotep, which was shown to Keziah Mason in a dream and acted as an instruction manual for the curves she drew on her cell wall to escape into the 4th dimension. Some of the writing clearly contains the names of Nyarlathotep and Azathoth, as well as names we think were written in the Book of Azathoth, while some of it, appearing to be gibberish, may actually be mathematical in nature. We may never break the code, but the similarities with the Yog-Sothoth Squidgate seal we unearthed last year prove that our secret Organization of Lurkers is even more ancient than we thought." That's probably not all true, but you can never tell with this guy, so wear with caution in public spaces. This will be available on both men's and women's style shirts (we'll contact you for size and style). The top 6 backers of this campaign will have their names "written in the book of Azathoth" - incorporated in the design depicted as hieroglyphs. Printed on high quality black 100% (preshrunk) cotton the t-shirt is included at many levels, but can also be added to any level that doesn't include it for $25.
SUPPORTER WORK SHIRT OR HOODIE Get a work shirt or full zip hooded sweatshirt of the Squidgate Scarab design for $50. (Squidgate Scarab design is printed on the back of the work shirt and hoodie.) Work shirt is short-sleeved black 65% polyester/35% cotton. Hoodie is 50% cotton/50% polyester. If your reward includes the t-shirt, you can upgrade to a work shirt or hoodie by adding $25 to your pledge.
MESSAGES FROM BEYOND: Find yourself in the pages of the DAILY LURKER, a 1930s style newspaper that we are creating to commemorate the event. Printed on real newsprint and containing faux articles, historic photos, fiction, comics, film and programming information, and content from our contributors. You can appear in the year 1934, without all the mental agony that comes with a Yithian brain swap.
Or maybe you'd like something a little more morbid? Write your own (or your alter ego's, or maybe your Call of Cthulhu® character's) fantasy obituary and supply a photo (period dress, monster costumes, etc., are encouraged) to take your place among the real and fictional individuals who passed in 1934 at our IN THE VAULT - OBITUARY level!
ALMOST SQUAMOUS: You're front page news! We can't promise it will be pretty, but it might make you infamous. You'll be the main subject of a front page mythos-related news story, written by Adam Scott Glancy, Daily Lurker special correspondent and author of “Delta Green”. This comes with all sorts of other goodies, check out the full description in the side bar.
Where would the Mythos be without the artists who have dared to look Beyond and bring back their sanity-shattering visions to show us the true meaning of reality? From Richard Upton Pickman to Henry Wilcox, art is a central theme in Lovecraft's fiction. Turn your home into Pickman's Gallery with these visions of madness from the most innovative Lovecraftian artists of today.
At the Arcane Arts level, as well as the 3-Day Xylograph, VIP Xylograph, Yog-Sothoth VIP, Throne of Chaos, Thousand Masks, Great Old Ones, and Executive Producer levels, you can take home a special limited edition hand-colored Wood block print from Liv Rainey-Smith. Her haunting work is featured in "Arcanum Bestiarum" and in the upcoming "Starry Wisdom Library" anthology. This is an actual print, hand-pulled from an inked wood block, carved by the artist. Liv is a festival regular and long-time vendor in the Mall of Cthulhu. You may remember last year's offering, "Cthulandia," and this year she has created yet another beautiful print for us, called "Sign!" featuring Brown Jenkin and the Black Man looming over the Book of Azathoth. The print is 8"x 6" on a 10"x 8" sheet, hand-colored with genuine mineral pigments including garnet, hematite, Minnesota pipestone, purpurite, and natural iron oxides. If you pledge at any of the levels containing this print, you're getting an exceptional value! These hand-colored special edition prints are valued at $120 each and won't be offered after the Kickstarter. You can add it on by increasing your pledge by $85.
This year we thought it would be interesting to have a 3D piece to complement the 2D art. We commissioned Ann S. Koi of Catalyst Studios to create a special sculpture just for us. She came up with this beauty of a beastie! The figurine, based on the finial that Walter Gilman breaks off during his visit to the city of the Elder Things in "Dreams in the Witch House," stands about 4.5" tall and approx 2.5" in diameter, is cast in sturdy resin, and hand-painted primarily black and gray, with metallic highlights. This is a closed edition, only available through our Kickstarter rewards. Get the figurine at the Arcane Arts-Figurine level, the 3-Day Figurine, VIP Figurine, Yog Sothoth VIP, and most of the upper level Experiences. You can add this on by increasing your pledge by $65.
At the VIP level and above, you will receive the official 2014 festival poster, with art created by Mike Dubisch, the winner of the 2013 Pickman's Apprentice live art competition.
GRAPHIC NOVELS courtesy of Dark Horse Comics: Those who partake of the Yog-Sothoth VIP or Witch Cult levels will receive one of 12 signed graphic novels including Abe Sapien: Dark & Terrible, BPRD: The Return of the Master, Colder, Let Me In, Ghosted, and Witch Doctor.
NEW "EXPERIENCE FOR TWO" REWARD LEVEL! Midnight in The Witch House
Pledge at the $444 (2/3 of the Beast!) Midnight in The Witch House level and get the rock star treatment from the cast of the new Dreams in The Witch House - A Lovecraftian Rock Opera. Imagine your evening... you and a friend start at 5pm with our VIP Party and art opening, before watching the festival opening ceremonies, a night of movies until 11pm, and then the rock stars from Dreams in The Witch House, Douglas Blair Lucek from WASP, Alaine Kashian (the Witch), Mike Dalager, and Anders Fransson, whisk you away to a Midnight meal for two at Casa Diablo, Portland's own Vegan strip club, for the excellent food, drinks if you like, and whatever trouble the lovely women of Casa Diablo get you in to. We'll cover the food, but you're on your one after that! Party into the wee hours, and also get an autographed Double LP of the rock opera and a personalized photo of Doug Blair to help you remember just what exactly happened the night before. This is a VIP package for two, so you also get two "Seal of Nyarlathotep" T-shirts, lapel pins, golden tickets, a single poster, and a single code for the download package.
H.P. Lovecraft invited his author friends to use his otherworldy entities and lore, and even encouraged them to take part in adding to his mythology. This created a collection of shared universe fiction by several of his contemporaries, and is a legacy that continues today as more writers contribute to his oeuvre.
Pledge at this level and you can take a place among the stars as you become a character in a short story by Cody Goodfellow, commissioned specifically for this festival. Cody Goodfellow is a giant among the modern cosmic horror authors. His writing style combines Lovecraft's mythology, spy thrillers, science fiction, the bizarre, and anything else that tickles his fancy, then distills and delivers it straight to your pineal gland.
Everyone knows paranormal researcher J. Sheridan Osborne died under shady circumstances in an office park near Keiser, Oregon. What very few people know is that he pulled one last trick before his demise, parceling out his notes in Warholesque time bombs to a few select souls. Lucky- or unlucky- backers at this level will become Osborne's literary executors, receiving a personalized parcel of notes and documents tailored to their favorite macabre field. Become one with the story- a unique blend of weird fiction and epistolary pseudoscholarship in the tradition of H.P. Lovecraft, Lumley, Borges, and Eco.
Jess Gulbranson, an up and comer in the bizarro fiction arena, takes pop culture, philosophy, sci-fi, music, horror, and anything else that strikes a chord in his wicked little brain, and whips it into a tasty concoction topped with a bit of Lovecraftian paranoia.
The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society thrilled the Lovecraftian world with their award winning film adaptations of “Call of Cthulhu” and “The Whisperer in Darkness.” However, Sean Branney and Andrew Leman have been bringing the old gent's stories to life for over 20 years through live role playing games, music, and now 1930s style radio plays. Their series of Dark Adventure Radio Plays dramatize Lovecraft's fiction with stirring voice acting, musical scores, and atmospheric special effects.
You have the opportunity to participate in the walk-on role of a lifetime in this year's LIVE performance of a brand new Dark Adventure Radio Theater production on the festival's main stage! That's right! They'll be premiering a never-before heard radio play, and you'll get to be a part of it.
Be a cultist in a ritual to summon a surprise "guest" of honor! On Sunday night before the Awards, we will gather on the main stage to perform a ritual that will be remembered as a blasphemy to sane and rational minds! This level includes everything at the VIP level, PLUS a Dark Horse graphic novel signed by the creator, Ann S. Koi's Elder Thing figurine, and you get your very own custom-made, hooded cultist robe!
Maybe you've heard of this game “The Call of Cthulhu®”? While many Lovecraft fans were introduced to the Master of cosmic horror through books, films, and even art, a vast horde were introduced through a gateway drug known as role playing games. Early editions of Dungeons & Dragons referenced the Cthulhu Mythos, and in 1981 Chaosium released The Call of Cthulhu®, written by legendary game designer Sandy Petersen. In 1997, Adam Scott Glancy, Dennis Detwiller, and John Tynes created the Delta Green contemporary setting for The Call of Cthulhu® game, bringing a modern para-military spin to the investigation of the world's dark secrets. The stars are right and you now have the opportunity to play with the masters a second time!
Reserve your seat at the table for a scenario lead by either Adam Scott Glancy on Saturday (limit 4) or Sandy Petersen on Sunday (limit 4). This level also includes a full 3-Day festival pass, VIP party ticket, limited edition Squidgate Scarab T-shirt, lapel pin, the digital download of digital art and exclusive audio tracks, PLUS a download of the new collection of articles and scenarios, "Island of Ignorance," courtesy of Golden Goblin Press.
More than a mortal, not quite a god; still a good place to be! From out of the writhing masses, your voice will be heard! Your VIP treatment includes a vote for Best Short Film, 3-day pass, lapel pin, Green Room access, VIP Party, t-shirt, signed festival poster, download pack, Liv Rainey-Smith woodblock print, Ann S. Koi Elder Thing figurine, Out of the Aeons full download, message in the Daily Lurker, and a place in the ritual with your own cultist robe. All items will be available for pick-up at the festival. BONUS ITEM: 1 weekend pass to the HPLFF in San Pedro. (Transportation and accommodations not included.)

ADD-ONS AND UPGRADES
THE CHALLENGE FROM BEYOND SOUVENIR BOOK
In 1935, H.P. Lovecraft wrote a famous round robin story with 4 of his author friends, called "The Challenge From Beyond." When C.L. Moore, A Merritt, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and Frank Belknap Long were finished, they had a singular plot written in each of their distinct styles. (The transition from HPL to REH is particuiarly wonderful!) We thought it would be fun to give a few modern Lovecraftian authors an outlet where they could collaborate and play off each other in a direct way. We plan to continue this each year with different authors.
This year, we asked Molly Tanzer, Joseph S. Pulver, Sr., Wilum Pugmire, Ross E. Lockhart, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Nick Mamatas, Cody Goodfellow, and Pete Rawlik to participate in "The Challenge From Beyond 2014," a Round Robin storytelling project much like H.P. Lovecraft's. The finished story will be published in a special edition hardcover souvenir book. You can add on the "Challenge From Beyond 2014" by increasing your pledge by $12. A complimentary copy is included in many of the higher levels.
Here's the run down on how to add-on to your reward level. If it's not listed here, it's not available as an add-on and can only be obtained by pledging at the reward levels in the column to the right.
- Add a supporter t-shirt to any level - increase your pledge by $25.
- Add a supporter work shirt or hoody to any level - increase your pledge by $50.
- If your level already comes with a t-shirt, you can upgrade your t-shirt to a work shirt or hoody - increase your pledge by $25 (for each t-shirt).
- Add a 3-Day pass (does not include anything else) - increase your pledge by $55.
- Add a Challenge From Beyond 2014 souvenir book - increase your pledge by $12.
- Add the Elder Thing balustrade figurine - increase your pledge by $65. NOTE that added-on figurines may be need to be shipped after the festival.
- Add the hand-colored special edition print, "Sign!" - increase your pledge by $85.
- UNLOCKED! Add Strange Aeons Magazine Issue #13 the special Fiction edition - increase your pledge by $10 (includes shipping).
2014 is THE YEAR OF THE WITCH
This year, the stars have aligned on one of our favorite Lovecraft stories, "The Dreams in The Witch House." We'll be showing 1968's "Curse of The Crimson Altar" which adapts the story (loosely, but still awesomely) and stars Christopher Lee and Boris Karloff. There will be a LIVE musical performance of selections from the new "Dreams in The Witch House: A Lovecraftian Rock Opera", with Mike Dalager, Doug Blair (from WASP), and Alaine Kashian (Broadway's "Cats")! Plus, there are a couple other things we're not ready to talk about yet, but when the time is right, we'll let you in on the fun.
Both Liv Rainey-Smith and A.S. Koi created special edition items for us that are inspired directly by the story, and artist Mike Dubisch created wonderful Witch House-themed poster artwork. We also took Azathoth and Nyarlathotep (the black man of the Witch-cult) as inspiration for the darkly Ancient Egypt style T-shirt, lapel pin, and commemorative tickets. This will also manifest in the exclusive music track by Mars Homeworld that will be included in the download pack.
Don't care for "Dreams in the Witch House?" Say it isn't so! Well, only about 6 hours of our 30+ hours of programming will be Witch House themed; just enough to be a special treat for fans of the story, without overwhelming those who don't care for it.
Special Thanks to all our Collaborators!
All of our collaborators have a personal connection to the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival & CthulhuCon, and most have either been guests or attendees. They are a huge part of why this event is so unique and memorable. We'd like to say a heartfelt thanks to:
Risks and challenges
If we reach our goal, we'll have the resources to expand the programming, fly out more guests, and provide an even more amazing experience. If we don't reach our goal, we will have to scale back our grand plans. This will be our 4th festival as directors, so we are comfortable with all the processes that make up the festival.
Once successfully funded, we will need to start the process of printing T-shirts, producing the lapel pins and other physical rewards. These jobs have already been arranged and are just waiting for us to greenlight them at the end of our Kickstarter project. We expect this to take no longer than 30 days from the completion of the Kickstarter. With successful funding, we will also be able to begin confirming special events and guest bookings, as well as book additional films that provide historical perspective on Cosmic Horror in Cinema. As a backer, you will be kept in the loop on all these developments leading up to the festival, so that you can be sure that we are fulfilling our end of the bargain.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
You can add any of the available add-on items by increasing your pledge by that amount.
For example, if you pledge at the $90 3-Day Deluxe level, but you want to add a figurine:
-Pledge $155 ($90 + $65)
-Choose the $90 3-Day Deluxe as your reward
Second example, if you pledge at the $90 3-Day Deluxe level, and you want to add a book and upgrade to a work shirt:
-Pledge $127 ($90 + $12 + $25)
-Choose the $90 3-Day Deluxe as your reward
We can see that you pledged more than the reward level amount. It's important if you want a level that is limited to a certain number of backers, that you choose that reward level. At the end of the Kickstarter, we will send out surveys to collect any necessary information from you (t-shirt size, etc), and we will ask what your add-ons and upgrades are in the survey.
You can upgrade your t-shirt to a work shirt or hoody by increasing your pledge by $25 for each t-shirt.
For example, if you pledge at the $90 3-Day Deluxe level, but you want to upgrade your t-shirt to a hoody:
-Pledge $115 ($90 + $25)
-Choose the $90 3-Day Deluxe as your reward
We can see that you pledged more than the reward level amount. It's important if you want a level that is limited to a certain number of backers, that you choose that reward level. At the end of the Kickstarter, we will send out surveys to collect any necessary information from you (t-shirt size, etc), and we will ask if you upgraded in the survey.
The $55 3-Day ticket add-on only includes 3-day attendance and does not come with any other merchandise. It's essentially like buying a 3-day ticket at the box office. To get all the goodies (golden ticket, lapel pin, T-shirt, etc.) you'll want to add-on $90 for the deluxe treatment. This isn't because we're mean! Since Kickstarter takes a significant chunk of the money on a $55 sale, we make considerably less than a ticket sold through the theater box office, so we actually can't afford to include any goodies at that price. That's one reason why we offer such great incentives at the $90 3-Day Deluxe levels, because it helps us offset the money we lose from Kickstarter/Amazon fees.
The lapel pin is an exclusive item for those who back at a level that includes tickets to the festival. The idea is that it's an extra perk and a signifier that you're a "Lurker in The Lobby" - a regular attendee at the event - sort of like a secret society pin. If you can't come, we included it at two other levels, the $100 Shadows Out of Time and the $245 Traveler in the 4th Dimension, as an extra perk to go along with the idea that you will be "there in spirit" (those levels will also receive the gold tickets after the event, as if you had attended). The lapel pin is also something that attendees can only get by backing the Kickstarter (they won't be available for sale later).
We've had a couple requests to make them available as add-ons, but we really want them to be an exclusive extra nice something for the folks that attend the event (you attendees appreciate this, right?), and not just something we sell. We know that will be a bummer for some folk.
On the other hand, you can join the inner circle by joining us at the fest! It's a great vacation, flights to Portland are usually quite affordable, and (unlike most conventions) the hotel is very very inexpensive. It's one of the largest and longest-running Lovecraftian events in the Cosmos, so if you're a fan, you will have a fantastic time and we would love to introduce you to the family!
You guys are waaay over your initial goal. Why should I keep giving and sharing your project with my friends?
Our initial goal was set to cover just the barest minimum of our upfront costs (really, just one or two big expenses). The truth is, Kickstarter and Amazon take a substantial percentage off the top (about 10%), and we're also going to spend a lot of the funds raised fulfilling all the awesome rewards (a thing which we love!), which will leave us with a whole lot less than the total you see above.
Honestly, even if we kept *every single penny* of that total, it still wouldn't cover all the costs of putting on this year's show. Creating an event like this take a lot of time, and an astounding amount of money. Please help us and keep spreading the word. Every pledge gets us closer to long-term sustainability, and an ongoing place for our community of Weird creators.
