About this project
Delve into Portland's past
In the past we've taken you on a trip to ancient Egypt and an expedition to R'lyeh, and this year we're bringing the cultists home to Portland, OR! Delve into the shadowy past of our beloved city's underground with the decadence of 1930s Chinatown as a backdrop. Join us for 3-days of weird independent film, fiction, art, and music.
For VIP backers, the weekend gets kicked off by a lavish VIP Reception at the Lan Su Chinese Garden and a private tour of the Shanghai Tunnels!
If you're unable to attend the festival, you can still pledge for these fantastic rewards at many "there in spirit levels." At the end of the campaign, we'll calculate your shipping to anywhere!
Scroll down to the "REWARDS" section to see descriptions of all the items.
If something is not included in your level, or you want more than one of them, Add-ons are additional items you may purchase in addition to your chosen reward level. Kickstarter doesn't have a way to signify that you've added something on, but we'll get that info in PledgeManager after the campaign ends.
Select an add-on by doing the following:
- Click the “manage your pledge” button on the project page.
- Increase your pledge by the amount needed to claim the add-on(s).
- Save your pledge. Do not change the tier that you originally pledged at.
- Add a supporter t-shirt - increase your pledge by $25.
- Add a supporter work shirt or hoody - increase your pledge by $50.
- Upgrade your t-shirt to a work shirt or hoody - increase your pledge by $25 (for each t-shirt you are upgrading).
- Add the Jade Hound Amulet - increase your pledge by $30.
- Add the Cthulhu Wall Scroll – increase your pledge by $30
- Add the etched Cthulhu Pint Glass - increase your pledge by $30
- Add the Cthulhu Coin - increase your pledge by $25
- Add a Challenge From Beyond 2016 double book - increase your pledge by $10
- Add a Cthulhu Patch - increase your pledge by $8
- Add a Festival Poster - increase your pledge by $10
- Add a plain 3-Day pass (normal wristband; does not include anything else) - increase your pledge by $55
If it's not listed here, it's not available as an add-on and can only be obtained by pledging at the reward levels in the column to the right.
While we've reached our initial funding goal (thank you!), this basically covers the Theatre rental. We still have a ways to go before we make a dent in most of the other festival expenses. Check out our wonderful Stretch Goals (one is already unlocked!), which will also allow us to make even more awesome stuff for you (like the exclusive Devil's Reef card game). Most of these new rewards will get added to Silver and Gold Shoggoth levels, and a few will become available as add-ons. This is where the magic happens - help us reach these goals by sharing the campaign with your friends again!
Scroll down to the image below to see if you're pledging at a level that will get these new rewards for free!
$21,000 / $23,000/ $28,000 / $30,000 - UNLOCKED! All four face cards in the Devil's Reef deck, now included in all Silver and Gold Shoggoth Levels!
$33,000 - UNLOCKED! Cthulhu Artifact Coin - This Challenge Coin, was used to challenge members of the Lodge in tests of loyalty (or just when wasting time at the tavern. This coin is now included in all GOLD Shoggoth Levels.

$40,000 - Best of 2016 DVD - We'll compile some of the best films from this year's festival on a special limited edition DVD that will be included at all GOLD Shoggoth levels, and will be available for add-on if we reach this mark. Estimated delivery Spring 2017.
You can support our Kickstarter whether you just want the Exclusive stuff we're making, or you plan on attending. We have levels for both! Many levels feature Lovecraftian goodies like t-shirts, sculptures, prints, and other rewards that are exclusive to our Kickstarter.
A NOTE ABOUT SHIPPING
This year, in an effort to streamline the survey and reward fulfillment process, we are trying out a pledge manager app. At the end of the campaign, Kickstarter will charge your account for the amount of your pledge. About a week after the campaign ends, we will send you the survey in the pledge manager app. If you are having your rewards shipped to you, you will be charged the actual weight-based shipping through the app. This means you will be paying shipping separately, but it also means you'll likely be paying less shipping because we can more accurately calculate it by what country you are in. Depending on your reward level, you can expect US shipping to be between $2-$15, and International shipping to be between $7-$35.
3-DAY PASSES - A full 3-day pass to the festival comes at the $95 level and above (look for "3-Day Pass" in the reward list). This gives you access to all main programming in our three auditoriums and the E.O.D. Center for the duration of the festival. Many Levels that include a 3-day pass will include perks, like front of the line privileges on opening night, priority entry at events that have limited seating, and other extras that will unlock with stretch goals.
Regular passes will also go on sale after the Kickstarter, however, the only way to get the limited edition supporter Shirts and lapel pins, and other limited edition items is by reserving your ticket through this Kickstarter! Support us now and get something unique that you can wear to show others your love for the event!
SOUVENIR TICKET - Each 3-day pass in our backer reward levels comes with a souvenir ticket! This will not be available outside the Kickstarter. This gives you access to the festival and also becomes your badge. This will also help us identify you as a 3-Day pass holder and let others see that you're one of the chosen (you backed this Kickstarter).
ATTEND VIP - Lan Su PARTY and SHANGHAI TUNNEL TOUR This is THE event that will immerse you in the story! The VIP Reception will be held at the Lan Su Chinese Garden on Thursday, October 6th from 8-11 pm. The Garden is a beautiful historic space, recreating the home of a scholar. With covered walkways, gorgeous architecture and landscaping, this is a sumptuous setting for a lavish kick off to the festival.
Enjoy samples of tea in the two story teahouse, sip adult beverages while enjoying the crisp autumn air in the courtyard, and nibble on tasty hors d'oeuvres while you mingle with your fellow VIP backers, Guest of Honor Stuart Gordon, and other select Guests.
During the evening, as part of the experience, you'll be escorted on a special Private tour of the Shanghai Tunnels as no one has ever experienced it before! You'll go underground and discover a bit of history you won't soon forget! A ticket for the VIP event is included in all VIP levels, Experience levels, and All Access levels.
*Lan Su Chinese Garden is located 239 NW Everett St in the Pearl District of downtown Portland. The tour site is one block away.
LAPEL PIN - All Attendee levels, VIP levels, Experience levels, Shadow Out of Time, and Traveler Between the Stars levels include the limited edition lapel pin. These are being produced exclusively for attendees (including the "there in spirit" levels) and are not available separately or outside the Kickstarter.
LIMITED EDITION SHIRTS
SUPPORTER TEES - Each year we create a special Kickstarter-only shirt design that can't be obtained outside this campaign. We often wonder how ancient cultures would have interpreted Cthulhu. This year's Shanghai Tunnels theme prompted us to look at the Great Old One through the lens of Chinese culture.
On the lapel pin and shirt designs, he is imagined as a dragon-like creature, traditionally associated with power over rain, water, floods and typhoons, bringing power, strength, and good luck for those worthy. This is available on both unisex (S-5XL) and women's fitted (S-2XL) style shirts (we'll ask you for size and style in the survey when the campaign ends). Printed on high quality 100% (preshrunk) cotton, a t-shirt is included at many levels, but can also be added to any level that doesn't include it for $25.
SUPPORTER WORK SHIRT OR HOODIE Get a work shirt or full zip hooded sweatshirt for $50. (The design is printed on the back of the work shirt and hoodie.) Work shirt is short-sleeved, black, 65% polyester/35% cotton. Hoodie is 50% cotton/50% polyester. If your reward already includes the t-shirt, you can upgrade to a work shirt or hoodie by adding $25 to your pledge.
BREAKOUT SESSION WITH STUART GORDON! - Stuart Gordon wrote and directed numerous films based on Lovecraft stories, and now 10 lucky backers will get to spend an hour chatting about whatever they want to with this most prolific Lovecraftian actor! We will randomly select 10 backers from any level that includes a 3-Day pass.
BREAKOUT SESSION WITH ADAM SCOTT GLANCY! - Have you heard any of Glancy's classic festival stories? The Dog Head? The Christmas Present? Rumor has it, he has a few new ones. Be the first to hear it straight from the master's mouth. We call it a breakout session, but it could just as well be called story hour with Scott. You'll be entertained, we promise! 10 backers will be randomly chosen from any level that includes a 3-Day pass.
TAKE A TRIP BACK IN TIME
THE DAILY LURKER: This is our festival program that we create to commemorate the event! Printed on real newsprint to look like a 1930s style newspaper, it contains faux articles, historic photos, fiction, comics, film and programming information, and content from our contributors. You can pledge for just one copy, but it is also included at all levels at and above the Daily Lurker level.
MESSAGES FROM BEYOND: Find yourself in the pages of the DAILY LURKER! With a message in the classified ads, you can appear in the year 1936, without all the mental agony that comes with a Yithian brain swap.
Or maybe you'd like something a little more morbid? Author and resident EOD Evangelist Cody Goodfellow will write your Weird Obituary! Supply a photo (period dress, monster costumes, etc., are encouraged) to take your place among the real and fictional individuals who passed in 1936 at our IN THE VAULT - OBITUARY level!
ALMOST SQUAMOUS: You're front page news! We can't promise it will be pretty, but it might make you infamous. You'll be the main subject of a front page mythos-related news story, written by Jesse Bullington, Daily Lurker special correspondent and author of The Enterprise of Death, The Folly of the World, and editor of Letters to Lovecraft. This comes with a VIP 3-Day pass and all sorts of other goodies, check out the full description in the side bar.
Artists who have committed their sanity-shattering visions to paper, canvas, and clay have enhanced and furthered conceptions of the mythos and madness. From Richard Upton Pickman to Henry Wilcox, art is a central theme in Lovecraft's fiction and an integral part of this festival. Add to your own Pickman's Gallery with these visions of madness.
The Jade Amulet “In the coffin lay an amulet of curious and exotic design, which had apparently been worn around the sleeper’s neck. It was the oddly conventionalised figure of a crouching winged hound, or sphinx with a semi-canine face, and was exquisitely carved in antique Oriental fashion from a small piece of green jade.”
Joe Broers has created this exquisite “jade” amulet exclusively for us. It is included in higher level rewards, and can be added on to any level.
Cthulhu Wall Scroll Found among the possessions of Miskatonic University Professor Emeritus Ferdinand Ashley, this depiction of Cthulhu conforms to 16th century style Chinese painting, but very little could be uncovered about its origin or history. This reproduction wall scroll is a unique piece of archaelogical history. This is included in VIP and high level rewards, and can be added on to any level.
For the readers: Challenge From Beyond 2016 Book
In 1935, H.P. Lovecraft wrote a famous round robin story with 4 of his author friends, called "The Challenge From Beyond." When C.L. Moore, A Merritt, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and Frank Belknap Long were finished, they had a singular plot written in each of their distinct styles.
This year, we asked Mike Griffin, John Shirley, S.P. Miskowski, Nikki Guerlain, Andrew S. Fuller, Wendy Wagner, and Aaron Besson (the Lovecraft Micro Fiction Contest winner!) to participate in "The Challenge From Beyond 2016.” The finished story will be published in a special edition souvenir book. You can add on the "Challenge From Beyond 2016" by increasing your pledge by $10. A complimentary copy is included in many of the higher levels.
THE TAINTED INKWELL
H.P. Lovecraft was all about spreading his mythos around, inviting his author friends to use his otherworldy entities and lore, and encouraging them to take part in adding to his mythology. This created a collection of shared universe fiction by several of his contemporaries, and is a legacy that continues today as more writers contribute to his oeuvre.
Pledge at this level and you can take your place among the stars as you become a character in a short story by Weird Author Anya Martin, commissioned specifically for this festival and printed in the pages of the Daily Lurker!
Backers at this level will receive a dossier of strange documents and images, from the macabre and sinister collection of occultist J. Sheridan Osborne*. Included in the dossier will be a unique, original short story featuring the gory demise of the backer, and a curious... "object" that under no circumstances should the backer try to open.
*Paranormal researcher J. Sheridan Osborne died under shady circumstances. Before his demise, he parceled out his notes in Warholesque time bombs to a few select souls.
Jess Gulbranson, local Portland weird fiction author, takes pop culture, philosophy, sci-fi, music, horror, and anything else that strikes a chord in his wicked little brain, and whips it into a tasty concoction topped with a bit of Lovecraftian paranoia.
THE HORROR IN THE PLAY
The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society thrilled the Lovecraftian world with their award winning film adaptations of “The Call of Cthulhu” and “The Whisperer in Darkness.”
The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society thrilled the Lovecraftian world with their award winning film adaptations of “Call of Cthulhu” and “The Whisperer in Darkness.” However, Sean Branney and Andrew Leman have been bringing the old gent's stories to life for over 20 years through live role playing games, music, and now 1930s style radio plays. Their series of Dark Adventure Radio Plays dramatize Lovecraft's fiction with stirring voice acting, musical scores, and atmospheric special effects.
You have the opportunity to participate in the walk-on role of a lifetime in this year's LIVE performance of a Dark Adventure Radio Theater production on the festival's main stage! That's right! They'll be performing a radio play that has not been performed live before, and you'll get to be a part of it!
GAMING WITH THE GODS
Last year we started a new tradition of Adam Scott Glancy killing your character in a private Call of Cthulhu Game that takes place at the Festival Founder's home. It went over so well, Andrew agreed to let us do it again! As you play your scenario in the ambiance and comfort of his gaming den, you'll be surrounded by vintage movie posters, action figures, games, and other movie memorabilia. If there is time after your game, Andrew may even break out some films or clips from years past! The game starts at 11 am on Friday, October 7th, and goes until your characters are dead or insane, so you get to play in an epic game and not miss any films!
This level also includes a full 3-Day festival pass, Lan Su VIP Party, limited edition lapel pin and T-shirt, the Jade Amulet, Cthulhu Wall Scroll, and the digital download of digital art and exclusive audio tracks.
SERVITOR OF THE OUTER GODS
More than a mortal, not quite a god; henchman of Cthulhu is still a good place to be! This is for hard-core festival fans. From out of the writhing masses, your voice will be heard! Your VIP treatment includes a vote for Best Short Film in our jury, 3-day pass, limited edition lapel pin and t-shirt, Green Room access, Lan Su VIP Party, the "Challenge From Beyond 2016" book, the Joe Broers 'Jade Amulet', Cthulhu Wall Scroll, signed festival poster, digital download pack, and a message in the Daily Lurker. To Mssrs A.M & S.G.
Two days ago, our headquarters were compromised. Several of our newly acquired objets d'art were taken into evidence by Portland Police. At least five of our brothers are in custody for questioning (never fear, we trust they will say nothing to reveal our mission). Our source inside assures us we will regain possession of our artifacts before the weekend. All should be in place at the appointed time.
Your faithful servant, R.
THANKS TO OUR CONTRIBUTORS!
We encourage you to visit their websites and check out the other fantastic art, books, and Lovecraftiana they have created!

Risks and challenges
If we reach our goal, we'll have the resources to expand the programming, take care of our guests, and provide an even more amazing experience. If we don't reach our goal, we will have to pawn everything to fund the festival. This will be our 9th festival as directors, so we are comfortable with all the processes that make up the festival. Also, this is our 5th Kickstarter for the HPLFF. The first four were very successful so we do not anticipate any problems with fulfillment of rewards, since we're pretty used to the process now.
Once successfully funded, we will need to start the process of printing T-shirts, producing the lapel pins and other physical rewards. These jobs have already been arranged and are just waiting for us to greenlight them at the end of our Kickstarter project. With successful funding, we will also be able to begin confirming special events and guest bookings, as well as book additional films that provide historical perspective on Cosmic Horror in Cinema. As a backer, you will be kept in the loop on all these developments leading up to the festival, so that you can be sure that we are fulfilling our end of the bargain.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
