Update 12/31: A Big Thanks!
Happy new year! I hope everyone has big plans for 2019!
The campaign will be closing out in a couple days and I wanted to say thanks for everyone who has supported this project and getting us to the goal. I removed the stretch goal for "The Eleven" and throwing it in for ALL backers:
Why? I really want to do something cool and special for you backers, so consider this my late holiday gift. Cheers!
House Rules is an absurd game: a bonkers battle royale where all players clash with off-the-wall weapons under rules of engagement chosen by each player. Players can even create their own rules but in this game, with great power comes great... something something.
Since the dawn of fun, since games and people were left unsupervised in the same room, there have been rules that exist only among a certain group or in a certain place. These informal rules are known to many as House Rules. Now, conjure up that intimate feeling whenever you want.
Glad you asked. This video will give you the lowdown:
Armed with weapons designed to disarm your opponents psychologically as well as physically, your goal is to collect the biggest weapon stash by clashing with your friends! The lazy game designer forgot to finish some weapons, so you need to use the included dry erase marker and tailor them to your specifications.
House Rules is all about giving every player the tools to rig the game in their favor. Before each round, each player lovingly and secretly hand selects between two rule cards with care...before they are abruptly shuffled up with the rules chosen by all the other players. To start the game, reveal the first three rules and play by those rules for that round.
For those brave souls that forge their own path, write your own House Rule and toss it into the mix! Be wary, your House Rule must get approval from at least one other player before it can go into effect. So no, you can't (or at least shouldn’t) write a rule that says “I Win”, drop the mic and walk away.

By backing the House Rules campaign, you will have access to campaign exclusives like custom Backer Cards and The Eleven!
Yea! House Rules is your game! You choose the rules, you make the weapons better, and you make the game better by playing it more and more! So, why not let the backers include weapons that they want in the game? These cards will be exclusive to Kickstarter backers and come included with each copy of the Kickstarter version of game. Guidelines for Backer Cards are detailed in the Stretch Goals section.
That's right! You get a boat, and you get a boat and....What? Sorry, this isn't Oprah's Favorite Things. Oh. Not free boats? Okay then moving on.
The game will ship for free to US addresses, and $7 to Canada, EU and Australia. Save some money and back the game NOW rather than paying more for shipping later!
Included in the explicit edition is the Base Game in addition to 45 extra weapons that are intended for mature, adjusted adult people that need a little more help behaving like children. Weird I know.
I'm really excited to see what kind of weapons you come up with, but first a few guidelines:
- No Hate Speech
- No existing characters or intellectual property
- They are going to be moderated by the creator. If I can't decide, I will put it to a vote.
Sound good? We Cool? Awesome. When you fill out your backer survey at the end of the campaign, submit a weapon that you want included in the game.
Hello, my name is Eric Williams. I'm an electrical engineer in real life, but my main passion is playing all kinds of games! House Rules is my first game design, and I hope to share it with all of you.
House Rules began as a simple card game where I tested the core mechanics with a group of friends. As we played, we threw rules out of left field and everyone pitched the other players on their own crazy rules and found out what they could get away with. It dawned on me that this creativity and randomness was the fun in the game!
The most unique thing about House Rules is that players are in the drivers seat and are empowered to make the game their own and have really unique moments every time they play!
I'm working with an experienced fulfillment company that can easily ship the game to the USA, EU and Canada. Shipping to the USA is included in the price of the game. If you live in the EU/Canada/Australia, shipping is an extra $7.
Target completion date is July 2019.
If you are interested in the breakdown of costs, I made a donut chart showing how the project is budgeted:

Risks and challenges
House Rules has been in development for four years, and has thoroughly playtested both with the designer (me, hi nice to meet you) and extensively blind playtested. While this is the second backing campaign the cost has been brought down, the quality of the game has increased, and countless lessons have been learned along the way in order to make this launch successful.
House Rules is working with an established printer, and logistics company, to bring the game to you. These guys have been in the business for a while and will get the job done right.
House Rules is my passion, and I hope you'll support this game through my publishing efforts. I'll do everything I can to keep my promise to you backers, and deliver a unique game that is uniquely yours.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
