About this project
Hotdog is a little “spinoff” of Skooba Design – a small but well-established business owned by a family with more than two decades of bag design and manufacturing experience. We’ve spent most of that time making award-winning bags for photography, laptops and other electronics, but always wanting to find an “excuse” to pursue something that related to our passion for yoga. That excuse came in the form of a mat bag our founder made just for his own use. It got so much attention in the studio and at workshops, that we wound up putting it into production, and for the past year it’s sold faster than we can make it. The great reception and love we’ve gotten from the yoga community have encouraged us to turn Hotdog Yoga into something much more than a side gig with just one bag. We want to use our experience and knowledge of how to design and make exquisite bags to create more styles and reach more of the yoga community.
The Hotdog Yogatote
The Yogatote follows on the heels of our first hit product, the Hotdog Yoga Rollpack. Like its predecessor, the Yogatote is designed to be more practical and versatile than any standard mat bag. It starts (of course) as a full-featured yoga bag – with mat carrier, divided compartment for block, shoes or sweaty stuff, water bottle pocket and more. But its unique design lets you hide all those features away – the mat sling turns into a pocket, the divided compartment tucks away, and the water bottle caddy zips out of sight. So in seconds, you’ve got a gorgeous, roomy bag that you can take anywhere… not just to the studio. The Yogatote is sure to be your new best travel buddy.
It's perfect for a weekend getaway, a trip to the beach, your daily commute, and more. This is one bag that doesn’t need to stay in the closet when you’re not headed to practice.
After decades of bag-making, we can tell you for sure that you get what you pay for. That’s why we don’t skimp on anything that goes into our bags – from high-end luggage grade micro ballistic nylon to powder coated metal swivel hooks (no junky plastic here), our materials are first-rate. And our craftsmanship, attention to detail, and obsession with quality are uncompromising.
As a huge thank you for supporting our campaign, we are offering the bag as a reward starting at a $50 pledge. This is 60% less than the $120 retail value of the bag when it hits the market.

Why We Need You
We’re a small, privately-owned boutique company, and proud of it. Of course, that comes with limitations – especially the limitation of not having the deep pockets of a gigundo corporation. So we’re turning to Kickstarter, and you, to help offset some of the costs of first-run production and launch marketing.
The Sampling Process
The yogatote is in final pre-production sampling. The pictures shown here are of the most current piece. The expected final production sample is on the way and will have the following changes, which are anticipated to be in the final production version:
- Reduce excess loose webbing on mat straps (don't worry, it will still fit all size mats, even with towel)
- Only one shoe pocket, on the left side of the bag (sized to fit pair of shoes, or block, or sweaty clothing)
- Only one water bottle pocket on the right side of the bag
- Decorative, double-needle blue trim stitch down the front of the bag to break up the large open area. (Kickstarter prohibits us from showing renderings, but if you saw our Kickstarter ad on Facebook or on our site, that's what it will look like)
- The top of the bag will be entirely closed when zipped (current sample has open-ended flaps)
Ideation, Production & Fulfillment
Initial product design and development: This phase was completed in November/December 2013. Concept sketches, enhanced renderings, and detailed manufacturing specification packets were produced at our Rochester, NY design headquarters.
First prototype: Completed December 2013, reviewed and tested, and used to make revised factory specifications for second prototype. We made functional and aesthetic changes.
Second prototype: This is the bag shown in the video and photos, completed January 2014. Reviewed and tested, and used to make notes for final production approval sample.
Final production approval sample: In progress now, due to be completed around second week of March. This will serve as the official factory reference piece.
Production: The results of this Kickstarter campaign will factor into the exact timing and first run quantity, but our plan is to have bags in the works on our regular production lines in April (these are lines already making bags for us regularly, so there are no risks or concerns about sourcing manufacturing – this is what we do). Normal material procurement cutting, sewing, final assembly, inspection and packaging takes approximately 8 weeks, and shipping from the factory to our Rochester warehouse takes approximately 4-5 weeks. So, if we get started at the beginning of April, our hope is to receive bags here around the end of June. Of course we will be in constant communication with our Kickstarter supporters with production status and ETA updates.
IMPORTANT: If you are outside the continental US, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org before pledging, so we can tell you how much to add for international shipping.
Risks and challenges
Because we are well-established bag designers and manufacturers, we’re not “coming in from the cold,” and if funded, your bags will be made and delivered. The only real risk is that if we underestimate the first production run and get significantly overfunded, some later funders may have to wait for a second ship date, But we do this every day, we have ongoing production lines, and we will scramble to make more bags for anyone who doesn’t get theirs from the first batch. One of our closely-held values is in the importance of not letting people down.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
