Can you name a Bing Crosby tune that's not a Christmas song? How about a Mildred Bailey tune? Or Al Rinker? All three of these outstanding performers called Spokane home. Yet, when members of Hot Club of Spokane interviewed random people in the Spokane community, most could not muster an answer. (Watch the video for some comical responses!)
Hot Club of Spokane is an organization of musicians in Spokane, Washington dedicated to the preservation of jazz, swing, and blues. Founding members met for the first time not one mile from the Mission Swimming Pool, where almost a century earlier, Al Rinker recruited a happy-go-lucky character named "Bing" to play drums in his band called The Musicaladers.
If not for Al Rinker, Bing may not have made it to Los Angeles and the career that waited for him. Al's sister, Mildred Bailey, had been corresponding with both, encouraging them to come find work with her in the booming music industry of the 1920s. Al and Bing left Spokane in 1925 in a $40 jalopy, but Bing slept-in the morning they were to leave. Al had to wake him up, and pull Bing's sleepy "happy-go-lucky" self down the stairs and out the door to meet his destiny.
In a few years, Al and Bing were two parts of the Rhythm Boys (along with Harry Barris), the singing trio and featured act of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. Mildred followed soon after, becoming the first woman to front a national touring dance band, paving the way for others like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.
Hot Club of Spokane invites you to kickstart their debut CD project, which will feature over a dozen songs from the repertoires of Spokane's jazz royalty.
Tiered Kickstarter packages also include tickets to the CD release party at the Bing Crosby Theater in Spokane, WA on May 2nd at 1pm. This is the same theater where Al Rinker and Bing Crosby played show-stopping tunes for Spokane audiences at intermission and between movies. First known as the Clemmer, "The Bing" celebrates 100 years in 2015.
Additionally, all packages include free downloads of five Christmas tunes just recorded by Hot Club of Spokane, including the Bing Crosby classic -- yes, you guessed it! -- "White Christmas." These tunes will be available for download immediately, and in time for this Christmas season! Downloads available from SoundCloud:
On behalf of everyone in the Inland Northwest, and the generations of musicians and music-lovers to come, please help kickstart this important project to preserve and extend Spokane's incredible music heritage.
Risks and challenges
CD recording projects carry risks associated with the recording process and the production of CDs. But, Hot Club of Spokane's crew is loaded with professional musicians from local organizations like the Spokane Symphony, the Spokane Jazz Orchestra, and local music department faculty at Gonzaga University, Whitworth University, and Eastern Washington University. While this is a debut project for our group, most of us have recorded and produced professional recording projects before.
Additionally, bandleader and rhythm guitarist, Garrin Hertel, is the publisher of Nostalgia Magazine, a local history and memories magazine. He's a skilled project manager and very familiar with deadlines.
In short, we're built well to succeed with this project. We're ready to produce a quality project that our friends, family, and city will be proud to share.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
