Why ESEX Needs Your Help
The Dota 2 section of ESEX is two people, myself (@Hot_Bid) and Marc (@SirJolt). I worked on it as a side project while I was at TeamLiquid and it was never really something that was financially viable nor was it something I spent the bulk of my time on. I can remember so many articles we weren't able to write and drama-filled events that could've received the "ESEX treatment."
Now that I have left TL, I'd like to do Esports Express full time. We are very passionate about ESEX and we believe it provides something that is unique to each game that it covers: humor and levity in a sea of terrible but often hilarious drama. With your help, we'd like to see where ESEX can go.
Funding the Dota 2 section of Esports Express guarantees a few things:
- ESEX coverage of Dota 2 from January 2015 to post-TI5 reshuffle
- More frequent, high quality coverage that doesn't miss any drama
- New special features like hacked Gmails, photoshops, etc.
- We can pay our writers and ideally recruit more
Just in case ...
$15,000 - Harry Potter Dota 2 Rewrite
We will rewrite select chapters through the Harry Potter series where instead of magic, it's Dota 2. The final product will be roughly 15 chapters and cover the entire series. We've already written a sample chapter that you can read.
$20,000 - Dota 2 Satire Comic
We'll create a satire-based Dota 2 comic released weekly.
$30,000 - Untitled Dota 2 Video Series with GD Studio
We will make a video series with comedy-based journalism focused on Dota 2 similar to the style of Jon Stewart and John Oliver, written by ESEX and produced by the GD Studio.
Risks and challenges
We believe there will be no problems fulfilling what we set out to do in 2015. The biggest question really is what happens after that?
"Is writing funny articles about Esports a sustainable business?"
Frankly, we're not sure yet, but funding this project lets us spend the next year figuring it out. Meeting our funding goal is a great indicator of how much support and interest we have from a specific game community. It allows us pursue our eventual goal of sustainability and also guarantees a period of coverage for one of our favorite games.
We will be looking heavily into how to make this model work beyond the promised period, because we want ESEX to be around for a long time. We'll be experimenting with ads, Patreon, and other ways to turn ESEX into a sustainable business.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
