Maya Bamboo, LLC is the producer of Hot Bambú lump charcoal, a sustainable charcoal used for grilling. We operate in partnership with sustainable bamboo plantations; utilizing clean retort technology in our process.
We are proud to supply a choice in natural carbonized charcoal that uses no trees, no fillers, and no chemicals to chef’s and week-end grilling warriors everywhere.
We recognized the need for a sustainable product choice in the market for a charcoal that doesn’t contain trees, and with your support Hot Bambú aims to become a name you can find on shelves wherever you buy your grilling charcoal.
Not all charcoals are created equal. Our motivation is to make a superior product that is sustainable and brings people together. Through our bootstrapped efforts we have proven market readiness, which represents a huge opportunity. But our production capabilities cannot answer the demand and excitement all of you have shown. And we want to fix that.
The United States alone consumes 1 million tons of charcoal annually. Demand for wood charcoal encourages clear-cutting practices in developing countries. Traditional methods of production release harmful gases and particulates into the atmosphere.
Bamboo is a rapid growing and quickly renewable resource that sequesters carbon from the atmosphere at a faster rate than traditional slower growing hardwood and softwood crops, and it produces a yield up to 25 times that of traditional timber sources.
Maya Bamboo is currently the only bamboo charcoal company in the Americas and we want to build a U.S factory that will utilize renewable biomass, promote sustainable harvesting methods, and create jobs. The funds will provide the first production run in the United States and bags of American bamboo grilling charcoal for all of you.
Bamboo charcoal is manufactured by carbonizing bamboo in a retort under controlled airflow and temperature. Our technology recycles harmful gases and volatiles back into the production process with extraordinary efficiency.
Our mobile retort will travel to bamboo stands in the U.S, produce a ton of finished charcoal in 48 hours, and then return to our production facility to be bagged and shipped out.
We’ve taken all our experience building our initial production in Mexico, and made awesome improvements to apply to our new bamboo charcoal factory right here in Austin, TX. Because near sourcing products builds communities and jobs.
We have had fruitful discussions with municipalities in the interest of partnering to remove waste bamboo, which is a challenge for many predominately southern counties and states for forestry management and fire prevention. We've had outreach from people who have huge groves and cannot manage the fast growth. We also have a great deal of interest from retail outlets wanting to carry Hot Bambú.
We’re branded, trademarked, and the website is done. We’ve brought our hot, healthy, green charcoal all the way to a test market with a Whole Foods market, proving consumer readiness for a sustainable grilling product. We’ve brought Hot Bambú this far and really need help to take our production capabilities the rest of the way. On top of what we have invested, we need $28,000 to bring our production capabilities to the states.
- The retort to char the bamboo– a clean, mobile retort that removes costly fuel, time, and labor from the logistics of production.
- The space to work– a 40 ft converted shipping container parked on small parcel of land outside Austin. Economical space.
- The FDA permits– for the retort .
- Funds– to prepare and ship all the rewards.
- Kickstarter and Amazon fees.
The monies raised during this campaign will go directly to helping us purchase our equipment to increase production, lock down a great location for packaging, and to provide an American made bamboo grilling product.
By helping us fulfill our goal of building production line, you will not only be contributing to a great step forward for a small entrepreneurial business, but will be helping to reduce the strain that traditional charcoal production puts on the clear cutting of trees.
It’s up to you, our friends, family, and people we’ve never met to work with us to get the word out and expand production!
Once we reach our goal, we will build out our bamboo charcoal production line and be running as soon as possible. Our plan is to be in production by April 2014. We're confident that six months will provide us enough time to build our bamboo charcoal production line and be able to send you your Kickstarter Hot Bambú rewards.
Check the dates because many of the rewards will go out right away and you will have immediate gratification, although Hot Bambú is worth the wait.
We will be in contact with updates over the next several months. It is important to us that you to see how your contributions are being used. We'll also be sure to let you know if there are any unexpected delays.
Risks and challenges
For the product:
Competition makes you stronger. We expect that this will bring competitors. Really good ideas do. Currently there are over 20 successful lump charcoal (made from wood) companies in the U.S market. This is only 10% of the entire charcoal market, which is dominated by briquette products. There is room for competition. We intend to use our niche and grow responsibly and thoughtfully.
For the Retort:
We follow all EPA standards and certifications for compliance of Carbon Dioxide emissions. The mobile unit is outfitted with the best catalytic system to remove any particulates and smoke from the process. However, there is a bit of CO2 and water vapor that leaves the system. There may be time constraints placed on the processing of paper work with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (or any other state we will be processing in).
From grove to manufacturing and distribution we have learned a great deal about the challenges of logistics. We aren’t just making a phone call to a co-packing company and ordering a container. Supply concerns, contract negotiations, and logistics will bring challenges. It is the nature of the business and we welcome the opportunity to continue to find sustainable and smart solutions moving forward.
It does not impart any sort of bamboo flavor to your food, so the benefit goes to your meats, marinades and veggies. The low smoke and high temperatures allow for great desserts, breads, and pizza's. If you like smoke add your soaked chips for the desired flavor.
Bamboo is denser than the hardest hardwood, and the finished high quality bamboo charcoal retains that density, even though it is lighter weight the BTU potential output is the same.
Doesn't matter the grill, Hot Bambú burns hot. We get very high searing temperatures, great for steak! Remember to keep the airflow down, and you'll be up to cook time in about 10 minutes.
It has little ash, and the ash retains the majority of the carbon. So, it's great for your compost.
Simply use Paper and a match, NO lighter fluid or other liquid igniters are necessary!
