Hate throwing money in the garbage?
Hate wasting your food waste?
Want to live more sustainably?
Think that composting should be easier?
Love to grow your own food or flowers?
Love the idea of a worm bin but don't really want worms in your house?
Me too! That's why I designed the Beautiful Ruby Origami Composter.
The special design makes it beautiful and strong, with enough area to support a lot of composting critters and yet have a small footprint in your garden.
Ruby is made in the United States from double-faced corrugated plastic sheets, using High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and 50% post-industrial scrap that is 100% recyclable so she has a lighter footprint on the earth.
Origami Ruby works with nature.
Worms come in from the bottom, hang out, eat, lay some eggs then go out into your garden and do what worms do best, dig tunnels and poop! Those tunnels and worm castings (fancy name for worm poo) are what feed you plants and help with moisture control!
And because the Origami Ruby Composter works right out in your garden you never have to turn it. In fact your worms wouldn't appreciate that very much!
For years I used direct composting in my garden.
And it was good but not perfect. I experimented with various forms and in various containers But it was too much water, not enough air, too much odor, not big-critter proof... And it was pretty disgusting sometimes, I admit, but I am so committed to the value of composting food scraps that I soldiered on.
One day a friend said that she wanted to compost but it was just TOO GROSS! That is when I knew that I had to do something to make composting not only less gross but absolutely artful.
So I got serious and used my years of composting experience to create the perfect food scrap composting container. It's taken a few more years to work out the bugs, or rather work in the right bugs in the right way so that you never actually have to touch any bugs!
Ruby's design is the key!
Beautiful yes, but not just another pretty face! The special design makes it strong. Plus water and air flow to the right places. Ruby keeps the right amount of moisture in, along with the odor and decomposing action necessary for awesome natural fertilizing to happen.
And Ruby is the perfect worm hotel! Drinks, dinner and a place to hang out with other worms and make more little worms! Did you know that worm generations adapt and are better suited to eat the food they are hatched near?
Ruby will make your garden shine!
And not just because she has a sparkly glass knob! She is so pretty that your neighbors will think Ruby is a beautiful piece of art in your garden. And it is!
Risks and challenges
This is my second attempt at funding Ruby. I learned from the first time and changed some things.
I worked with my manufacturer to get affordable shipping to me of a smaller quantity so I can get composters to you with less actual cash needed. Thank you Judi! You are a gem!
I packaged and shipped a composter so I know how much the shipping and packaging will cost. It's too bad that shipping is so high but everybody's gotta eat, right! And in the future if I am able to have larger quantities produced and shipped the overall cost may go down.
I have sourced the ties and knob and latches. Actually using easily obtainable, durable and cost appropriate materials was one challenge I set from the beginning.
I am just as proud of what I left out of my composter design as what I put in. That is why Origami Ruby is $29 instead of $129.
