About this project

While its estimated over thirty per cent of our newest veterans returning from our wars in the Middle East suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), only seven percent of all veterans use the VA for their medical needs. The rest rely upon their family or community for support. History repeats itself, over four times the number of veterans who died in Vietnam have committed suicide, over 1/2 million went off to our prisions and jails. Getting home from war can be half the battle.

One learns in the military that you never leave a brother or sister behind on the battlefield, and in the streets. Dryhootch is a veterans community based center where veterans and family can come for support and assistance. They learn from other veterans who have been through their own trials of PTSD, addiction, family readjustment, homelessness, etc how to move forward.

Getting home from war is half the battle

But hows does a veteran understand what has happened to him/her? The struggles are well known by other veterans who have been baptized by fire. And many times the signs of trouble come long after their combat. This book is written by a combat veteran, himself a permanently PTSD disabled veterans who's journey took him through the best of life and through addictions, jail, suicide attempts, and stays in mental institutions. It was his immediate family and other veterans who helped pick him up and get him the treatment he needed for his war that refused to to leave him.

And on the other side of that journey to hell, he started a veterans peer organization, Dryhootch, that has help hundreds of veterans and take him to the White House in 2012 to be honored as a Champion of Change for his innovative work in helping our nations newest veterans rerun home safely.

Now this book can reach out to veterans and families to help them discover the journey they returned from in their own words, and how they can find the help to get them there. Its a radical change from most books on war trauma written in the language of PHD's diagnosing a war they never experienced, smelled, felt, or tasted. And why can never fully understand, or explain fully to veterans what is going on.

The funds raised in this campaign will allow the technology, design and editing services to get this book published at a low enough cost that veterans struggling can afford or check out of a Dryhootch or other veteran service location. Besides publishing as a paperback, it will be available in versions for kindle, iPad, and other devices.

With fund raised above our target we will provide books to be available to veterans and families at Veteran Summits and workshops.

Dryhootch has grown from a borrowed tent and some coffee to locations in 4 states that has helped hundreds of veterans and family members. This book can expand that reach and help thousands who suffer in silence today.

Risks and challenges

The largest struggle is finding the graphic design and editing to provide an experience to the veteran that let them feel that we have all shared a common journey without being judged by those others who never walked in their shoes.
This can open a door, or slam it shut for those who find it hard to share their trauma.
To address this, we are working with two firms who have worked with agencies in the space of veteran suicide and careful but mind opening messages.
Additionally, getting the word out to family and veterans is a struggle. We want to fund a book and healing tour to bring this book out nationally.
The more funds raised, the more complete the book & healing tour can occur.

$6,000.00 will pay for a multiple state tour

$10,000.00+ will pay for a nation-wide tour.

Its takes a community to bring these veterans home to their families. We cannot count on the government to solve all our problems. But you can help, by referring a troubled vet or family member to a Dryhootch or VA. And by supporting this project!
