Lightning Strikes

Apple debuted their new connector yesterday for the upcoming iPhone5, its 80% smaller, all digital and works in both orientations. We will be designing and making a bolt-in swappable mount for the new cord as soon as we can get our hands on a sample. The width of the new phone didn't change, so it should fit well in the pocket and make these future proof.

On the manufacturing front, we have less than 15% left to get through bead blasting and anodizing. This, as you know, has been a very frustrating step in this big project. The new vendors we brought on have had a high percentage of rejected parts - mostly from uneven surface finishes on the hard to control micropolishing step where they dip the docks in 210° bathes of mostly nitric and phosphoric acid. As we have learned, the chemistry in these bathes changes throughout the day so samples have to be frequently taken to the lab for titration and then chemical levels adjusted.  We had to bring them to a halt a half dozen times to get their processes right and have been working with them directly on their shop floors. Refinishing those non-passed parts makes them take about 4x as long to do because they have to be inspected, stripped, re-blasted and anodized again. I think these final docks should go out the week after next if our anodizers stay the current course.

Thanks,

Casey & ElevationLab

Hey Casey, how will the new connector affect the Elevation Dock+? Are you adding a DAC chip and op-amp to the board to feed the 3.5mm line-out? Will that easily swap in as well? Thanks for the feedback.

They told me this on the 28th of September:
"Casey is estimating to have the lightening connectors available if all
goes according to plan within the next 40-60 days. Please keep
      checking our website for updates."

Mine just got shipped,.. Too bad they couldn't hold them and ship them with the new connector :(

I am sticking with the 4s so I am not having the issues described by other backers above. I am however having the issue that I STILL HAVENT GOT MY DOCK. When you told us it was going to be April I was a bit disappointed but given the production problems you were having I understood the long lead time. It's now OCTOBER. This just went from painfully slow to completely ridiculous!!!!!!

I created myself a little adapter allowing me to use the Lightning USB cable which comes with your phone and install it within the Dock. Meaning that I am now able to use the dock with the iPhone5 and it is no longer a paperweight. If you have access to a 3D printer, feel free to go to my blog or to thingiverse to get the file and get it printed. http://mikehellers.com/blog/2012/09/30/3d-printing-iphone5-adapter-for-the-elevationdock/

Used my dock for only a few weeks before it became a paperweight. Please create the iPhone 5 adaptation fast. We all don't want to wait another 6 months to use our docks again.

People, please stay away from this kickstart project; their products MAY be nice but their communication is flawed.. People are still waiting on the original dock, and any questions regarding that are ignored.

Stil waiting for mine, which was 'promised' end of may...

Estimated delivery of April 2012 - still no news on my dock, now have an iPhone 5 as well so even when it does arrive I can't use it and then I'll have to pay for the new bolt-in lightning part when they get that done I suppose?

      Really disappointed.

    18. Gurkenglas on September 27, 2012

Please don't think on a new dock for iPhone 5. Please ship all the waiting backers.

Thank goodness I still have an iPhone 4!!!
Don't wont to further upset all the iPhone 5 owners, but after reading this: http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/09/dont-buy-cheap-iphone-5-cables-because-they-dont-exist-yet/… it seems to me that you guys won't be getting a lightning swappable cord mount anytime in 2012.

    21. chaomanX on September 26, 2012

Waiting and waiting and.... How will I know if my docks got shipped?

    22. Scott Halstvedt on September 26, 2012

      Hey guys,
I know it can be discouraging to wait for a long time to get your Kickstarter swag. And it might seem like you'll never get it. But these people are actually working tirelessly to make a kick-ass product, and it ended up being as awesome as they said it would be. That's no small feat, and I commend Casey and the crew for making quality their top priority. I waited a long time, and then a stunning, functional object showed up at my door. I would not be nearly as happy had it come in half the time but with imperfect fit and finish.

International orders are hard, and I hope you get your docks soon. They're coming!

    24. Chan Thye Chuan on September 26, 2012

Everyone, be prepared to be disappointed. From how things are progressing, I can see a few things they are so going to fuck up:
      1) No safety stock for lost shipments
      2) No shit given to all kickstarters for waiting so patiently for even just a response via email whether they sent the dock or not even though we already sent an email request as instructed for a notification.
      3) If they make the converter for the iPhone 5 dock connector via a mount or a kit to change the elevation dock connector, they are going to fuck it up like they how they fucked this one up.
      4) If anything is broken for overseas orders, we are fucked since they have no safety stock or any concept of prompt delivery in the first place. Assuming they actually are going to send me the dock.

Oh man, this just get worse the more I analyse it.

So maybe Kristina is overreacting a little. Let me add some facts Christopher. I paid for my docks (the sweet sum of 190$) on February 11, 2012. In two weeks that'll be exactly 8 months ago.

From an Elevation Lab email in March I quote: "Our production timeline hasn't changed, still on track to be shipping in April." In two weeks that'll be six months ago. That's half a year.

I understand about being popular and being delayed, but frankly this is getting to be really, REALLY, ridiculous. And the fact that by the time this dock actually arrives it'll be just in time to be useless because of the iPhone 5 doesn't do much to lighten the mood.

It's about time some people got their act together and started delivering on promises.

    28. Christopher Bowns on September 25, 2012

@Kristina: this project closed funding in February. If it was a 30 day funding period, you could have, at the very most, have funded it 8 months ago. “almost a YEAR” seems unnecessarily hyperbolic.

    29. Athanasios Kalavritinos on September 25, 2012

I hope these are being shipped fairly, so the orders go to those who pledged first.

Apparently it will be hard (if not impossible) to make cables for iPhone 5. Great! So my two docks will be useless.

With 15% still to make, when can I expect delivery of my order that was promised for some months ago? The current model would suit my iPhone 4S just fine.

    43. Rob Yeichner on September 22, 2012

These make great paperweights for those like me that upgraded to the iPhone 5. Just put you paper in the desired location, pick up a dock and place it on the papers. There - the papers will not blow away. I never had a need for 4 paper weights like I have now but at least I am prepared if the world reverts back to a 1960's style of fan cooling and all-paper communications.

Alternatively, I would love to be notified in 2014 when the new bolt-in connectors are available.

    44. John Luker on September 22, 2012

@Jeremy: You can send it to me if you like. I still don't have mine and I'm not upgrading to the 5 for a while...
