"He lazily wrapped his mouth around the barrel and placed his toe on the trigger. The terrifying howl of the deer slug loaded shotgun shook the southern Florida craftsman style home.
Jessie had let herself in to check on Carl since she had not seen him for a few days. When she heard what sounded like a bomb going off in the upstairs bathroom of the Wright house, she sprinted toward the sound of the blast, absolutely fearing the worse. The thoughts raced through her head as she made it up the stairs.
Did Carl’s mother kill herself? Did Carl kill himself? Did Carl snap and kill his mother? Or vice versa?
As Jessie made her way to the bathroom, the air smelled of dense and recently fired gunpowder. She stood frozen in the bathroom door way in horror." - Excerpt, Rise Like a Phoenix

About the Author:
"Rise Like a Phoenix" is the debut novel written by myself and is the first book of a trilogy. After my own bout with serious depression, I too have suffered through some of the same trials and tribulations faced by the main character in this book. For most people, this is just a fictional story. But writing this book saved my life, because a bit of it is my life.
I have been through the ringer with harsh times, untimely deaths, and my own attempted suicide back in September of last year. While I was in the mental hospital for a 96 hour evaluation, I rediscovered my muse in writing and actually felt a lot of that weight lifted off of my shoulders and it has helped me tremendously. My road to recovery has continually grown better, and will continue to get better for months and years to come as long as I have a pen and a notepad.
I sit before you as a former firefighter, former law enforcement officer and most recently, a humbled writer, asking for your kindness and generosity to help make this project happen. I need your support to self-publish this novel because I believe that everyone should have a shot at their dreams. Life's too short to not enjoy doing what you love for a living.
After the death of his father, a USMC Pilot, Carl Wright must look deep within himself to determine how to find his own way. Dealing with the loss of his father poorly, Carl’s childhood friend Jessie is wracking her brain to figure out how to help Carl. Will he heed her words, or will he continue on his self-destructive path and drive away everyone that has ever loved him?
Risks and challenges
The challenge as a writer is trying to break into this industry as an unpublished, non-agent writer with a debut book. All costs will go towards ISBN registration, and self-printing through the great folks over at DiggyPOD. I'm counting on your generosity to help me overcome that hurdle and help propel my status as an established author, and to gain lifelong fans.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
