The Hookless Fishing Lure is an invention that changes the way we catch fish. Traditional fishing is done using a lure and a hook, baiting a fish to bite and snag its mouth on the hook. The Hookless Lure instead uses two powerful magnets to clamp a fish's mouth when it bites. This allows fishermen to catch-and-release fish without causing physical damage to the animal. Contrary to popular belief, fish do feel pain, and impaling a fish with a hook not only causes physical damage, but also psychological damage (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/fish-feel-pain-180967764/). Many studies like this have documented the following dangers done by hooks to fish:
1. Hooks being snagged on the fish's gills, guts, tail, eyes, and other critical areas
2. Hooks catching on the fish's mouth and ripping their lips, causing significant damage
3. Hooks being stuck in a fish's mouth/throat and becoming irretrievable, making it difficult for fish to consume food after being caught
4. Increase in mortality rates for recently caught fish
In addition to the problems with hooks listed above, there are other downsides of using a hook to fish:
1. Risk of hooking yourself and inflicting serious injury when a hook snags on a fisherman's eyes, ears, and face (https://www.outdoorlife.com/photos/gallery/fishing/2012/04/survival-skills-how-remove-fish-hook-and-treat-injury)
2. Hook snagging on weeds and rocks when fishing
The Hookless Fishing Lure solves all of the problems stated above. Our hope is that this invention can revolutionize the way we fish to be better and more environmentally friendly.
How It Works:
The Hookless Fishing Lure works by having two small Neodymium magnets on opposite sides of the lure. When a fish bites down on the attractant end of the lure, a trigger mechanism releases and causes the lure to clamp shut. Because these magnets are so powerful, they are strong enough to hold fish up to 4 pounds in weight. Even when the fish is shaking, pulling, and thrashing, the lure will hold the fish and let you reel it in.
In order to release the fish from the lure, simply pull apart the two ends. This makes it incredibly easy for fishermen of all experience levels to quickly return the fish back into the water, giving it the best chance of continued survival.
How It's Made:
The Hookless Fishing Lure prototype is designed on CAD software and produced with a 3D printer. If fully funded, plastic molding may be used instead to supply lures to project backers.
If our project is successful, we will continue to develop the lure design and we aim to make it more compact/smaller. Another improvement to the design we are working on is making some of the plastic body translucent in order to appear more life-like to fish. We have continuously worked with expert fishermen to improve the lure, and we will consider further changes in the future.
While we have proof of concept and working prototypes, we are working every day to make our product even better. Our updates will keep everyone up to speed on the design process and product testing. If you have any feedback, we would love to hear it.
The Hookless Fishing Lure is a patent-pending invention.
Risks and challenges
In order to fulfill all orders in the stated deadline, we must switch from 3D printing to plastic injection molding. While we have secured a manufacturer and taken into account budget/time, a potential challenge is that development of the final product may take longer than expected. Regardless, there should be no reason why any backers won't be rewarded by the end of the year.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
