Overnight Success* is a documentary film revealing the past, present and future of the band Honor Society.
A band from the suburbs of NYC, we got our start as most bands do, playing to no one. But we had a clear vision of what we wanted to do musically and we never doubted we would make our mark.. and then we did.. sort of.
It couldn't have been written any better: we were discovered at one of our NYC club shows by who else, but the Jonas Brothers at the height of their world-wide success. They were vocal in their interest in us for who we were, and not intent on making us clones of them. We were quickly whisked away to Los Angeles, signed to a major record label and thrust into the national spotlight. But the national spotlight wanted us to be Jonas 2.0, and the more we tried to fight it, the more that association stuck to us. And just like the seasons, things come and go...and as the curtain came down on the “new car smell” of our band, we had to look at each other and decide if we had what it took to stand on our own. There was no doubt in our hearts, but circumstances, the rigors of the minute-to-minute changing music industry and lasting associations from our past were more challenging than we ever could have imagined.
We had to hold on for dear life, buckle down, check our egos and re-discover our identity from every angle. Even at the risk of losing the national fan base we had been exposed to. It even meant parting ways with one of the founding members of the band.
We spent two years of non-stop writing and touring to show people what we are really made of. It proved to be gut-checking, but rewarding to know we had what it took. But even with all the growth, development and successes along the way, we are still held back by parts of our past. Now in 2013, we continue to encounter people who pass judgement as though we are frozen in 2009. A Google search yields images of a brief moment in our distant past and undoes all of the hard work we've done over the past few years to grow beyond our former associations... which begs the questions: what will it really take to make our mark? Will we be able to succeed without a net? Can we continue to do this and make a living? Is a full reinvention what we need? A name-change?
We play music for the sheer joy of the experience. We can gratefully say we've played to 6 people and 60,000 people and our effort never, ever changes. We experiment with sounds, shows and ways to play with our audience. We own what we do because we are the ones doing it. Our new single and EP of the same title “Serendipity” have been our first baby steps at resetting and the world is responding. It is a transformative experience and we want to share it with the world because becoming who you really are is a universally-shared experience…and we want to share our experience with you.
This is our documentary. This is our life, our music and our story still in-the-making. It is an insane roller coaster, but an exciting experience that we are living. We have something to say and we will not give up…and we want you to experience it all.
Follow our journey to freedom. The freedom to make the music we want to make, the freedom to play our show, the freedom to make a documentary to show fans and newcomers what the music industry is like for a band that's been clinging to bubble of the next level for two and a half years. In retrospect the 'making it' part was easy, the staying there and going to the next level has been the fight of our lives.
We are asking for your support to make this film happen. We know our fan base always has our back, but this story is bigger than all of us, so we hope that people who have never heard of us will also join in! It is a real look at what a band goes through to get to that first moment that the world embraces. It is the countless hours of hard work and dedication, the blood, sweat and tears, the successes and failures... it is the Overnight Success*
*10 years in the making
Risks and challenges
We've never made a film of this magnitude before, but the concept is pretty simple: interview the important people on our journey, film everything every day and collect a ton of video footage (which we've already been doing) and then edit all it into a cohesive, compelling piece that tells our crazy story. What kind of risks and challenges are there in accomplishing this? In our opinion, not many!
We are already in discussions with a handful of video editors and film makers that specialize in documentary films, so we don't anticipate any difficulty there. We've been capturing tons of video footage over the past several months: footage from tour, the recording studio, our homes, our personal lives...plus we have loads of old footage from "the vault" over the past several years. Not to mention, we'll continue to capture video from now until the completion of the project, so there will be lots to work with.
That being said, the only real question is: how does the story end? As of now, we don't know because the story is still being written. We may find that the story-line of this documentary finishes within the next 6 months...or it could take a year. It could end with a cliff-hanger...or it could end neatly with some catalyzing event in our career yet to happen. We really don't know, and that's a big part of what makes this project so exciting to us! There's an amazing story to tell, which will be made all the more interesting by what happens over the next 6 to 12 months.
As for the soundtrack portion of the project, we can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that it will pose no risks or challenges that we haven't confronted before. We've made numerous studio recordings, so we know what it takes to get the job done. The biggest challenge in recording is almost always budget, but we've built this Kickstarter project to include the budget we would need to make an all-original, professional-quality soundtrack recording. That's a lot of BRAND NEW MUSIC! We're psyched.
We are men of our word. If this project is successfully funded, you will not be disappointed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
