Hello, and welcome to Being Honest With My Ex!
We were engaged for two years, and then we broke up. And then we stopped talking to each other for a year, and now we do a podcast together.
SJ, better known as Honor Eastly, is a full-time artist and occasional mental health worker. She lives in Melbourne, Australia.
Peter is a board game designer who used to write porn. He lives in Toronto, Canada.
Each week, we get together and talk about our lives. Stuff like:
- The Relationship (including the time Peter cheated on SJ, and the time SJ cheated on Peter)
- What it's like being best friends with your ex-fiancé
- The complications that come with being a straight guy dating a trans dude
- The terrifying parts of trying to make a creative living that no one talks about
- The absolute mess we made of polyamory
Our most popular episode is the one where SJ reads out the only love letter Peter ever wrote her. It makes a lot of people cry, if that's your thing.
- We've been making the show for more than a year now - we've had more than 80,000 downloads in over 50 countries, and we don't plan on stopping the show anytime soon.
In fact, we want to do it more.
We want to do it in 3D.
Look I'm going to level with you. "3D" is just our fancy way of saying "Live", but: yes! Most of our audience is in Melbourne, so we want to do a LIVE SHOW at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in September 2017.
The only problem: Peter is not in Melbourne. Peter is in Toronto.
That's where you come in!
If we can raise $2000, we can put Peter in some kind of air-car, and drive him (through the air) to Melbourne!
Once he's in Melbourne (provided he doesn't crash on the way), we'll put on a series of four live shows!
The exact dates aren't locked in but it'll be during the Fringe Festival, which is in September / October.
What does a live podcast look like? It's the brutally honest conversations you're used to, raw and unedited. We'll have questions from the audience, special guest stars (between the two of us, we have a lot of Melbourne-based ex's) and each night SJ will either sing a song or throw something at Peter. Both will be entertaining.
The truth is, we haven't been in the same room since we've been friends again. So these live shows will partly be learning how to be around each other again. It's part of why we wanted to do this live, because it's a new chapter, and one that people don't often get to see. Who knows what'll happen? Maybe it'll turn out like this:
Or maybe we'll get back together!
(We probably won't get back together.)
The shows will run for about an hour, and will be a mix of us talking smack about each other and answering the important questions in life. When we were a couple, we used to do a lot of live shows - with segments like Porn Pop Quiz and Whipped Cream Pictionary. C'mon, from the sound of those games, it's clear you can trust that we know what we're doing.
We genuinely can't do this without your help though, which is why we're running this Kickstarter! This is where you can pre-purchase tickets, get cool rewards (including exclusive, never-before-heard episodes) and show your support!
If we can raise $2000, we can make the show! If we don't hit that target, we can't - it's as simple as that.
So, how can you help?
You can travel and come see us anyway! C'mon, Peter's flying across the world for this. You can't do that too?
Alternatively, for $10 you'll get a virtual ticket!
We're going to stream the show live across the interwebs, and for just $10 you'll get access to the URL. Listen to us chat onstage, wherever you are - and then get first access to the final, edited recordings!
For $25, you get a ticket to the show! They're going to cost $30 at the door, so you're getting a $5 discount and helping make the show happen.
For $35, you'll get a ticket to the show and a signed poster! We haven't decided on the exact designs yet, but we want to have posters available for sale, and supporters at this level will get a Being Honest With My Ex poster of your very own.
Yes, we'll write anything you like on there. No, we don't mind writing really really obscene stuff.
For $50, you'll get two tickets and a poster! Bring a date - bonus points if it's an ex - or come by yourself and see two different shows. Maybe you'll meet someone there!
This is as far from a scripted show as you can get, so each night is going to be totally different.
For $99, you'll get a season pass + a poster! We want to do at least 4 shows, but if we end up adding more (see below) you'll get access to all of them for less than a hundred bucks. That's less than one absurdly-expensive cup of coffee!
(These are limited, so get in fast!)
As a special thanks for purchasing a ticket to our show six months in advance, every backer will get a copy of the three episodes that we recorded but never released!
- Late: An episode in which Honor objected to Peter telling a story about her being late, and we had a big ol' fight about it. It gets pretty raw.
- Plebiscite: For a while, the Australian government was planning on holding a plebiscite to decide whether or not to legalize gay marriage.
- Donald Trump: The week after D-Trump was elected president, we decided to do an episode about it. It was a sad time.
These episodes have never seen the light of day (we haven't even listened to them since they were recorded) but as a gesture of appreciation for your support, we're going to cut them together and send them to everyone who supports the project!
If we manage to exceed our target, we can do some really cool stuff:
- $3,000: We can do a 5th show! Season passes will include this (and any other bonus shows), it'll be included in the livestream, and everyone who backs will get early access to the fully-edited version!
We have no idea how this Kickstarter is going to go (seriously! We've never done something like this before) but if we manage to exceed three thousand dollars raised, we have some cool stuff planned!
We're the two most painfully honest people you'll ever meet.
Honor Eastly is a professional feeler of feelings. She writes things, makes things, sings things, and is obsessed with mental illness, feminism, sex, creativity, and the meaning of it all.
She's an award-winning artist who's had her work shown at the National Gallery of Victoria, has written for Daily Life, VICE, the UN (wtf?!), and has created and starred in several live shows (including That Sexy Show, which sold out at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2014).
So far she has cried on more than a dozen episodes of the podcast, but she still comes back every week for more.
Peter C. Hayward is a Toronto-based writer, game designer, and puppeteer. He wears colorful pants and aims to fill the world with as many cool things as possible.
When he's not making SJ cry on the podcast, he makes board games (more than 20,000 copies sold worldwide) and writes sitcoms. He's been featured on the front page of Cracked (talking about what it's like to write smut for a living) and has a striking blue beard.
He enjoys the podcast because he gets to talk to SJ each week, and he's still a tiny bit in love with her.
Firstly, we're going to put on a show! We'll get Peter into the country, hire a venue, print posters, find someone to help us with the livestreaming etc etc etc. We're already putting some of our own money into the project - this Kickstarter is to help us take care of the other costs and make sure this is a thing that people actually want us to do.
If we manage to exceed $2,000, we'll put that extra money into the show - both the live show and the podcast. We pay for an editor to do the first cut of the show each week (hi Lance!) as well as hosting costs and all the other expenses that come with doing this kind of project.
Not to mention the emotional cost. Seriously, SJ has to spend a lot of money on tissues.
Risks and challenges
Peter and Honor have produced more than two dozen live shows, including We Should Know Better, Geek Out!, That Sexy Show, Alan Smithee's Screen Test, and a number of improv shows.
Risks for the show are low; we're primarily running the campaign to gauge interest. If we make our funding goal, we'll know that there's enough demand to do the show.
We have the resources to cover any unexpected problems, and really the biggest risk is that Honor will start crying on-stage, her tears will leak into a microphone, and the resulting fire will singe Peter's blue beard.
Fortunately, we're prepared for that: Peter will be bringing a spare beard with him from Canada, and Honor will always have a box of tissues on-hand to sob into.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
