Austin's ONLY *free* 3-day Community Street Band Festival returns March 22-24 2013: 20+ bands play free in the streets and parks of ATX
HONK!TX is a 3-day Community Street Band Festival that features some of the most exciting, original, and talented radical marching bands playing absolutely free in the streets and parks of Austin. After a successful debut and a wonderful encore, we are returning for our exciting third year March 22-24, 2013.
For the past two years HONK!TX brought live music into Austin with unconventional style and flair, transforming everyday spaces into organic stages where the line between performers and the crowd dissolves. The response was magical, and performers and audience eagerly wondered aloud: when will the next HONK!TX be? Well, with your help - it's coming again in March 2013!
For the duration of the Festival, more than 200 musicians will be housed by generous neighbors and friends; local restaurants will provide food for performers and volunteers. Scores of community members will donate hundreds of hours of labor to make HONK!TX a brass-tastic success. In return, 20+ bands will transform the city into a joyful sonic carnival and visual spectacle, at no cost to the public.
The bands vary greatly in size and costume, each of them bringing a distinct sound and visual theme to the carnivalesque atmosphere This multi-day free and family-friendly event about music, community, and public space is imbued with the playful energy these bands are famous for.
Did you know none of the bands will be earning any money for the festival? They travel and play free because to share the love and joy of street music and expression. The modest stipends some bands receive cover only some of their travel expenses. This is where you come in!
In our third year we're branching southward, while keeping our tried and true roots strong. HONK!TX returns to Hyde Park (Adams Park and Hemphill Parks), and East Austin, but we're also heading south of Lady Bird Lake for the first time.
We'll be inviting back all of the bands who helped get us here (because we love ‘em!), and we're also inviting new bands from far and wide (and from right here in Tejas!) This year's parade should be bigger and better than ever thanks to support from KreweDCM and volunteers from Theatre Action Project, and it's still open to you and your community group to become involved.
Most important of all, we'll be keeping HONK!TX free to Austin.
WHY DO WE HONK?
(courtesy of honkfest.org) Across the country and around the world, a new type of street band is emerging. Acoustic and mobile, borrowing repertoire and inspiration from a diverse set of folk music traditions – New Orleans second line brass bands, European Klezmer, Balkan and Romani music, Brazilian Afro Bloc and Frevo traditions, as well as the passion and spirit of Mardi Gras and Carnival– these “honkers” all share a commitment to several core principles. Metaphorically speaking, they honk their horns for the same reasons motorists honk theirs: to arouse fellow travelers, to warn of danger, to celebrate milestones, and to just plain have fun.
First and foremost, they honk their horns – or beat their drums, or wave their flags – to enliven and embolden their audience. Members vary widely in age, class, ethnicity and background, and although they often wear some kind of uniform, there is also always an emphasis on individuality and a “DIY” (do-it-yourself) sensibility to their instrumentation and attire. These bands play music that is by, for, and of “the people.” The distinction between performer and audience, just like the distinctions between different musical genres, is just one more arbitrary social boundary they aspire to overcome. Spectators often think “Hey, I could do that!” and, indeed, these bands often recruit new members right off the street.
WHAT'S THE MONEY FOR?
HONK!TX is a grassroots, non-profit event that is made possible by the financial and in-kind support of thousands of local residents and businesses and the donation of performances and self-funded bands who will be traveling from all parts of the country.
HONK!TX has an estimated budget of over $30,000 that includes:Street Closure Fees
Police Officer Wages
Equipment and Supplies
This fundraiser's $10,000 goal is to bring in the Austin community and beyond at a high level to demonstrate their stake in making this engaging festival happen again.
These unique bands performed at the very first HONK!TX in March 2011. We look forward to seeing - and hearing! - man of them again, as they had such a fantastic time that they can't wait to come back! (Also, check out their websites and support their music!)

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We couldn't be more confident as we enter our third year:
* We have a solid, strong committee that enjoys the challenges HONK!TX presents, and the opportunities for teamwork and collaboration.
* Austin's brass band scene is blossoming, and regional representation promises to be strong.
* Bands from across the country continue to express interest in making the annual pilgrimage to share their wonderful music with the Austin community for free.
* Community partnerships continue to be a source of strength, and the community response to the festival couldn’t be more positive.
* We are continuously blown away by the constant stream of amazing individuals that go out of their way to share in the creation of this festival. All of the volunteer hours invested in planning, creating, hosting, organizing, running, participating, and being HONK!TX is much more than an investment in the community: it's coming out and giving Austin a big HONK!ing musical hug, followed by a high-five.
HONK!TX is the musical equivalent of an uncontrollably huge grin.
