These are Not the Type of Peppers you'll Find at the Grocery Store
Our varieties include superhots like the Carolina Reaper (the world's hottest!), Ghost Peppers, and Scorpions, along with lesser-known superhots like Big Mustard Mama, Swamp Thing, and Coyote Zen White. We also have super rare peppers like the Peruvian Aji Charapita, the Wild Brazilian, and the Pimenta Biquinho (aka Bird's Beak Peppers), along with classic favorites like the Scotch Bonnet Habanero, the Shishito Pepper, and the Peruvian Aji Limon (aka Lemondrop). We even have authentic Hatch Chili Peppers with seeds from Hatch, NM. Seasoning peppers like the Aji Dulce, the Habanada, and Fatali's round out the Scoville scale as well. This is just a sampling--there are 45 varieties in all, so you can experience the true taste of some of the world's rarest peppers.
Throughout the harvest season (starting in September) CSA members will receive a monthly box bursting with different chili peppers of all levels of the Scoville scale, ranging from the mild and flavorful to blazingly hot.
Since peppers freeze really well, you can stock up and enjoy them all year long. We'll include complete instructions for storing and freezing your peppers, as well recipes to make your own hot sauce, pickled peppers, smoked peppers and more!
Each CSA share box includes:
6 different types of peppers (18 total), History, Scoville Scale and flavor profile of each pepper Recipes ideas for making your own hot sauce, infusions, dried peppers and more. Storage instructions for freezing, dehydrating and pickling your peppers so you can enjoy them all year long. We'll also include tips for saving seeds from your peppers, so you can grow your own at home!
For the past four years, we have grown some of the rarest peppers in the world, selling them to some of the best chefs in the country from our farm stand in Union Square in New York City and Brooklyn.
We scoured the world to find super rare varieties and had seeds shipped from all over the globe to grow at our farm in Kutztown, PA, just 2 hours west of NYC. All of our peppers are started from seed in February, and we recently planted more than 5,000 plants totaling 45 varieties, covering all levels of the Scoville Scale.
Sustainable Farming Methods + Certified Naturally Grown = The Healthiest Peppers You Can Find
At Homesweet Homegrown, we use only biodynamic growing methods to encourage robust soil microbes, for the healthiest soil and pepper plants possible. We choose cover crops over chemicals to keep our plants healthy and happy. Our field is Certified Naturally Grown, and we never use any sprays or pesticides.
And, unlike the majority of farms which use black plastic mulch (a petroleum-based product that leeches god-knows-what into the soil) we use an organic paper mulch called Weedguard Plus. This is a biodegradable alternative that actually adds nitrogen and organic matter back into the soil, and allows the peppers to have a breathable soil surface, reducing the chance of disease, and boosting our crop production by an average of 25%.
For the past 4 years, we have specialized in growing hot peppers, selling to some of the best chefs, restaurants, and stores in NYC, including Momofuko, Print, Gramercy Tavern, Superiority Burger, Dean & Deluca and more.
Grown and Picked by Us
We handpick the peppers ourselves, recruiting community members who want to make a few extra dollars with a fun side hustle. We pay a fair per bushel wage (fast pickers can earn $20-$30 an hour!) and we have a no-stress approach to picking. We post flyers in our college town, and a lot of community folks come out to help---and it's always a fun time (with the most interesting conversations taking place in the field.
In 2013, we became the highest funded hot sauce on Kickstarter because we grow the peppers ourselves. We are super excited to be a part of Kickstarter Gold, offering shares of this year's harvest. Last year, we launched the world's first hot pepper CSA, and it was a huge hit. So we are back, with more pepper varieties than ever before.

Risks and challenges
