About

So, what's this about?

Computers, something we cannot live without anymore. It's something that exists for a long time, but affordable since 40 years now. I'm sure, you're now remembering your first computer. Was it an early Tandy? Perhaps a Commodore, Sinclair, Atari? Or is your first memory a blue screen of Windows 95?

And at March 17, 2018 you'll be able to relive these memories!

Enter the HomeComputerMuseum

HomeComputerMuseum Logo

Enter the first room. The whole atmosphere feels like you're back in 1977.. and there they are, the computers. Ready for you to try out what you remember. The signs next to the computers will tell you about the computer and what you can do with it. Make sure to check out the information using the QR-code on the signs. You'll go to our website and find in-depth information about this particular computer, including the story of it's (previous) owner. Why did he buy this computer, who was he/she? Most important, give it your best shot or use this computer using the information, or try to solve one of the puzzles that will guide you in a playful way in the museum.

After you've see this, you'll enter the next room. Everything changes in 1980, so does the atmosphere and computers. Again, computers are on and ready for you to trigger that nostalgic feeling of first using your computer.

A little history about Bart, the creator:

This 2011 photo is how Bart's collection started.
This 2011 photo is how Bart's collection started.

When I was buying old computers, I found out several of these sellers were having amazing collections and they weren't doing anything with it. So I asked them, "what if I have a big location where I can showcase these computers in their original state? I won't be the owner (unless you specific tell me so), I'll only borrow these computers from you for a while." Some of them were not that keen of lending out their precious machines, which I totally understand. Others were happy that I would help them out taking care of their collection of old computers.

Only a museum? Nooo!

No, not at all. It's more of an amusement park than a museum. Try to repair a computer yourself in our Repair Lab or watch a beautiful documentary in our movie theater, if it's available. If not, it's probably set-up for an old school LAN-party. Remember games like Red Alert and Whacky Wheels? We'll make sure the computers are networked and playable together. Just sit behind one of the computers and this time, you don't have to bring that heavy monitor ;)

Some mice...
Some mice...

So, what else I need to know?

There will be a few rooms themed rooms dedicated to one purpose. For example, a bedroom from the 80s, including a random computer from these years who people could've had in their room. Maybe the next month this room is transferred to an office location from the 70s or a living room of the 90s. Who knows!

This is not something I can do alone, so I contacted several collectors and friends to collaborate with me. For multiple reasons. This is not "Bart's computer collection", I envision (and know) to become so much more. I think this would be the centre of computing history in the entire Benelux, so it simply can't be only me. Also, these collectors will also lend out their computers and the museum isn't relying on one person only. Not now, not in the future. It's is a museum made by enthusiasts for everybody. Combined we currently have 6 people in our staff, all with their own field of expertise.

Feeling tired and want to drink something? Visit the Arcadecafe inside the HomeComputerMuseum where you can play on old-fashioned Arcade-machines, NES-computers, Playstation, Atari and many more computers and consoles. For everybody there will be fun somewhere there.

Do you have a computerclub and want to meet in style? Do you want to have an old-style LAN party or any other meeting where our computers and/or location fits? We will have the best place for you in our multi-functional room. Helmond is close to Germany and Belgium and we'll provide a big space with decent electricity for all your old computers to be run. If they break, feel free to use the repair center for replacing broken capacitors, power-supplies and drives. We will have logic analysers, oscilloscopes and devices your may need to fix the broken computer.

Location

We're lucky to have found a location in the centre of Helmond, it's 621m2 and easy accessible by car (and enough parking places nearby), train and even airplane (3 airports within 45 min drive).

Building
Building

But, the whole building is empty.. literally. That's where Kickstarter kicks in (get it?)..

Where will the funds go?

As stated under location, we need funds to have the building set-up. We're talking about walls, electrical circuit, lights, tables, showcases and safety/alarm. At some point, people have to be paid too for actually working in the museum. The current staff consist of 6 people who'll decide where the money goes and to make sure the museum will stay as it is.

Well will you open?

March 17th 2018 is the openingsfestival. Names there will be announced soon. It will be worth a visit and you'll get food and drinks!

Convinced?

Currently with nearly 100 computers ready to be played with and over 400 computers to be shown, We know this is going to work. We only need to make it look nice when you visit and to have, you know, lights and electricity ;-) so you can actually see what we have and make it the best museum experience ever!

Risks and challenges

Our challenge is to make computers and the history of them interesting to everybody! That's also the reason why we make this museum as interactive as can be, we will make sure the museum is more of an experience than just to watch things behind glass. Additional challenge is to make people come back and not a 'once in a lifetime' museum, but a museum you want to come back. Our risk is minimal and we have multiple backup plans to make sure this museum will have a building and will be visitable.

    Access + Book '8-BIT KIDS'

Amicom Retro Books & Records made an incredible book about being a youngster in the 1980's.
Your status was measured by how many discs and the amount of popular games you possessed. The kid with the new and highly desired games was ruler of our world.
Many bubble-gum, A-team gaming cards and even BMX bikes traded hands for these new, not so new and even cracked games. Nothing mattered more than being Knight Rider, the A-team and even ET for a moment. An amazing and beautiful book to bring back a lot of memories. Amicom gave the museum his blessing and he provided a part of his stock for our backers!
