Real holographic 3D: the way it's meant to be. A unique range of color holograms inspired by Escher. All you need is light to see. Read more
This project's funding goal was not reached on August 20, 2012.
About this project
We create visually stunning holographic 3D images of technically-inspired artistic designs. For this project, we are looking to push the boundaries of the digital holographic medium through exploring geometry, perspective, shape and form. This pursuit for cutting-edge design has led us to our current goal to create designs loosely based on the works of Escher. All designs will be crafted using the latest professional 3D design tools (3D Studio Max or Maya), and will result in your receiving the most complex and novel holographic 3D images ever created by us.
The following is a list of the specific images we would like to utilize in our quest to advance holographic 3D image technology:
These images are to be created throughout the course of the project and you will have an opportunity to obtain some of them as rewards before they are rolled out to the public.
Our holograms are art. Art in 3D form. In supporting our particular mode of artistic expression you are enabling us to push the boundaries of 3D holographic technology and design. We are on the pioneering edge of tomorrow's technology. The technology that will be used to communicate and express our artistic talents in the future. Join us and have a piece of tomorrow, today.
Animation and customization
It is possible to encode a limited amount of animation within a hologram, which can be seen when you move across the image. Some of the rewards include animated features. We have also included the option for you to customize some of the holograms. With customization it is possible to include your name, a dedication (e.g. Happy Birthday) or a logo in the 3D image. Please note that any text to be included should follow the general principles of Kickstarter (not defamatory, illegal, racist etc).
Terms, postage and delivery
Please note that the images shown above are only preliminary and they may be subject to change before they are finalized. If a backer fails to specify a particular hologram from a choice of holograms then one will be selected at random. Similarly, if a backer fails to specify customization options then it will be assumed that no customization is required.
The rewards include postage to the USA only. Postage to the rest of the world (including Canada) is additional per reward. EU backers need to add Value Added Tax (sorry about that). Shipments to non-EU countries may be liable to import duty, although there is usually no duty due on photographic or similar materials like holograms. Flashlights and desk lights will be delivered together with the respective holograms.
Our color digital holograms are fabricated using a state-of-the-art holographic printing machine. The machine is effectively a giant laser printer that produces reflection holograms as a matrix of small pixels, or holopixels. Each holopixel is about a millimeter square containing an interference pattern synthesized from the 3D scene from different viewpoints. The holopixels are written into a holographic film material using red, green and blue lasers. This process is akin to putting 3D puzzle pieces together to make a complete 3D picture. The film (or the complete picture), is then laminated on to 3mm black acrylic.
The black acrylic board contains the 3D hologram and is, essentially, the completed work. However, all holograms need a light source to replay the embedded 3D image. Currently, others are displaying their holographs in big bulky boxes. But those apparatus are unnecessary with Holoxica. Ordinary lights like flashlights, LEDs and spotlights will do. You have the opportunity to receive these lights as rewards and they will also be available for purchase on our website.
Correct lighting is an essential element of any holographic 3D system and ours is no exception. All true holograms need to be illuminated by a simple point light source which brings out the 3D image. The light could be a halogen spotlight, one of our flashlights or our desk light accessories. Our flashlights are designed for hologram illumination where the optics are optimised for a spot profile. Our standard desk light is suited for holograms up to 7x7 inches (17.5x17.5cm). Success in this project will allow us to produce our next generation lighting solution, which will be suitable for holograms up to 14x14 inches (35cmx35cm).
Use of funds
The funds for this project will be used to design, render and manufacture the digital holograms listed above. We will also invest in our 3D production infrastructure. Specifically, we will beef up our servers with GPU graphics cards to significantly accelerate the rendering time of the designs. This will help streamline the production process and lessen the time from design to your mailbox. Finally, we will utilize the funds to help make our lighting sources more aesthetically pleasing and affordable for the public.
Through Kickstarter, we are able to obtain bulk discounts on the hologram materials and manufacturing, savings that we will utilize to maximize your rewards. It is purely because of these discounts that we are able to offer you hologram-rewards at a much lower rate than their actual purchase price. For example, the 4 inch (10x10cm) digital hologram for a pledge of only $49.
As you can see from the images above, which were generated from 3D models, we have several of the basic designs in place. Now, we must finalize the designs and prep them for rendering. This requires extensive work in lighting, shading and texturing. We say that a hologram is worth a thousand pictures and this is literally true, the process requires us to generate thousands or hundreds of thousands of rendered images of the scene, each from its own perspective. In essence, thousands of 3D puzzle pieces. In the final process, we must carefully put all of these pieces together at which point, those thousands of images are printed in the hologram.
Holoxica is a dynamic high tech company capable of delivering a range of 3D holographic solutions. We produce real out-of-the-screen 3D- no tricks, no bulky boxes, glasses free, the way its meant to be. Holoxica currently specializes in making full-color 3D-holograms for the scientific community. The holograms are created using CAD/mathematical models, scanned data or live images. Current designs range from medical images or molecular structures to concept cars. Here is a video of our pioneering medical designs:

Holoxica is poised to be one of high technology's industry leaders of the future. With your support, we will be able to lead the industry in areas which support the daily consumer, not just scientists, doctors and the military complex.
Interview with our Founder
It is difficult to describe the passion, dedication and professionalism that forms the foundation of Holoxica. For those of you who are unable to meet him in person, we have included an interview given by Javid Khan, founder of Holoxica, in the hope that it can convey the passion that the written word cannot.
Upon winning the Nexxus Scotland Award for holographic 3D imaging.
