About this project
HOLO is a new magazine that explores the convergence of art, science and technology, brought to you by the team at CreativeApplications.Net (CAN). An extension to one of the most authoritative art and technology blogs, HOLO is dedicated to rich, detailed stories that demand time and attention. With HOLO we are committed to telling these stories – attentively and expertly – in a patient, spacious medium that does them justice.
Published twice per year, each issue of HOLO will be comprised of 150-200 pages and provide intimate views into fascinating studios, workshops, galleries and institutions around the world, seen through the eyes of stellar photographers and talented writers. The pace, depth and sensibility of print allows us to invest heavily in each story, and craft months of research, travels and conversations into nuanced portraits you won't find anywhere else.
In addition to extensive artist features, each issue will contextualize current trends and topics in visual essays, sweeping surveys, theory, opinion and experimental formats big and small. Each issue's carefully curated cast of interdisciplinary artists, scientists, technologists and toolmakers will help us map exciting new territory that doesn't need to be covered faster, but captured better.
As we continue to beat-report exciting work for you online, HOLO will have a shelf life above and beyond that churn. As a beautiful, timeless object you can enjoy, collect and – most importantly – unplug with.
With the first issue almost complete, we're eager to move into production. In order to do that and keep HOLO independent, we need your help.
The itinerary for HOLO 1 couldn't have been more ambitious: our writers and photographers have travelled around the globe to meet leading thinkers and practitioners. Follow us into the studios, workspaces and neighborhoods of these artists, designers, gallerists and toolmakers:
Our primary features will be complemented by a variety of additional formats that provide macro and micro perspectives into emerging fields and practices. For example: lavish photo-essays on wearable technology and projection mapping, both curated and contextualized by expert contributors.
Alexander Scholz (Creative Director)
An art director, editorial designer and writer from Berlin, Alex (now in Toronto) has worked on a range of publications covering art, culture and technology over the past 10 years. Among them: SCEEN, a digital art magazine he founded and ran as Creative Director from 2005 to 2008.
Filip Visnjic (Editorial Director)
The London-based founder and Editor-in-Chief of CreativeApplications.Net (CAN) is one of the hardest working bloggers covering the art and technology beat. His vast knowledge and keen instincts have made CAN one of the best curated and most authoritative resources in the field. Filip speaks regularly at various festivals throughout Europe and curates Belgrade's Resonate festival.
Greg J. Smith (Editor-in-Chief)
A Toronto-based designer and educator who has written for a variety of respected art, technology and design publications including Rhizome, Vectors, ICON, 3:AM Magazine. Greg was also co-founder and Managing Editor of Vague Terrain, an online journal about digital art and culture from 2005 to 2011.
Sherry Kennedy (Project Manager)
A Production Coordinator at design and animation studio Township & Company and part-time generative fashion designer who has the passion and organizational skills to keep HOLO running smoothly. Sherry will oversee HOLO's day-to-day operations and help us plan and implement our production workflow.
Chris Lee (Art Director)
Holding a Master's degree from the Sandberg Institute (Amsterdam), Chris is currently Art Director at C Magazine, an international art quarterly, designs the architecture journal Scapegoat and has contributed work to publications such as Volume, The Walrus, Mediamatic, The Journal of Aesthetics & Protest and Graphic.

- Printing: The lion’s share of the funds will cover printing costs. While high quality print on 200 pages of premium paper stock is expensive in any context, operating in a niche (by industry standards) with only a few thousand copies makes per-issue printing costs skyrocket.
- Commission fees: We've been fortunate to work with amazing talent on HOLO 1. As we believe not only in creative but sustainable relationships, we committed to compensating our contributors' efforts from day one – your donation will help us to continue to do so.
- Production expenses: Expenses obviously don't end with printing, writing and commissioning photography. It's the little things like Dropbox Pro and Basecamp that allow us to run HOLO as a day-to-day operation.

First Issue & Subscriptions: HOLO 1 will be completed in the spring and shipped to you in April. Subscribers will receive the second issue in late fall. We'll be working with a top-notch fulfillment service to make sure your issues arrive promptly and in impeccable condition.
T-Shirts: We are really serious about T-shirts. Designed by Amsterdam's Studio Moniker, they will be printed on sweatshop-free top quality fabric, come in dark grey as either the CAN or HOLO 'versions' and will be available in S, M, L, XL and XXL. CAN Memberships: As a thank you for supporting HOLO, all donations greater than $30 will receive a year long membership to CreativeApplications.Net (CAN). Casey Reas, Chandler McWilliams and LUST's text Form+Code: In Design, Art, and Architecture is one of the most authoritative books on code and creativity published over the last several years. John Maeda describes the book's success as bringing the "invisible realm of code" into focus and the impeccably-curated text is jammed with documentation of fascinating projects as well as a number of exploratory Processing tutorials aimed at beginners.
Joshua Noble is one of the most thoughtful practitioners active in the creative coding community. In Programming Interactivity (2nd Edition) Noble provides a comprehensive (650 page) hands-on guide to working with Processing, Arduino and OpenFrameworks with practical exercises, interviews with tool designers and loads of insight. It is ideal for novices, and a helpful reference for designers that are more experienced with building interactive systems.
Sifteo Cubes are a tangible, interactive game system that "get your hands and mind moving" in the tradition of Lego and building blocks. Recently named a Fast Company Innovation by Design Award finalist, these devices communicate wirelessy to respond to each other, a player's gestures, and come with four preinstalled games. We're offering the '3 Cube' interactive system starter kit (which retails for $130 USD) in our campaign.
Marius Watz has spent the last several years exploring how to get 'beyond the screen' with his work and was one of the first new media artists to make serious forays into digital fabrication. Watz, MakerBot's first artist in residence, has agreed to produce a limited-run of 15 of his Modular Lattice 3D printed parametric objects series for our campaign. These models vary in size, have a max height of 16" and each object will be unique.
Eno Henze is a Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist who explores generative systems in drawings, installations and performance contexts. Many of Henze's drawings are created with a custom-built laser rig and we've asked him to use this device to create a series of 30 9.5 x 12" (24 x 30cm) laser drawings. Each of these unique drawings will be on archival quality baryt paper and signed and numbered on the back.
The Amsterdam-based Studio Moniker (Jonathan Puckey, Luna Maurer, Edo Paulus & Roel Wouters) are fiercely devoted to exploring rule-based design. Given our interest in high-quality print design, we are excited to be offering Moniker's Birthday Poster within our campaign. These posters employ a donor's historical birthday information to generate a sequence of graphically ordered Roman numerals – each one is totally unique. Studio Moniker normally sells these posters for €300 and we've bundled them with a year subscription to HOLO and special recognition in our first issue for $350.
The Swiss installation artist Zimoun is renowned for his use of everyday materials like cardboard, ping pong balls and DC motors to create elaborate sonic environments. To aid the launch of HOLO, Zimoun has created a limited-edition series of ten 'motor boxes' that are crafted with the same precision as the objects that populate his installations. You can see a video of 1 prepared dc-motor, cotton ball, cardboard box 23x23x6cm in action here.
Derivative's TouchDesigner software is widely recognized as one of the most robust 'visual thinking' platforms available. Interactive art production, project mapping, live audiovisual performance – TouchDesigner is flexible enough to be applied in any of these contexts. We are extremely excited to be offering TouchDesigner 'commercial' licenses (new 088 version for a single user) in our $500 donation tier as the software retails for $600 USD. Matthew Plummer-Fernandez is a London-based artist whose work is completely emblematic of 'the eruption of the digital into the physical'. His recent Digital Natives series was featured at the 3D Printshow in London and we've asked him to create a related series of eight unique objects especially for our campaign.
Niklas Roy might coyly describe himself as an "inventor of useless things" but in examining his eccentric body of work it is clear that his whimsical devices celebrate play and discovery. We are very excited that Niklas has agreed to create a singular one-of-a-kind electronic object for a lucky donor who contributes $500 to our cause.
It only follows that a sizeable donation to HOLO will net a sizeable reward. Those contributing to the largest donation tier will receive (standard) airfare from anywhere in the world to Belgrade, Serbia for the Resonate New Media Festival March 21-23 2013. We'll show you a great time at Resonate and arrange a personal guide/assistant, five-star accommodations at the Square Nine Hotel, a private meeting with the HOLO team and an invitation to the speakers dinner where you'll dine and party with some of the most interesting and innovative artists in the world.
Risks and challenges
Team HOLO consists of publishing professionals (print and web) who know how to bring a magazine into the world. We are also familiar with the speed bumps and unforeseen surprises that pop up in any ambitious project. While confident about our planned April ship date, there always remains a possibility of unwelcome circumstances that can delay production. Hard drives can crash, a flight might get canceled, a contributor gets sick and not all artists are great with deadlines, email or material – these things happen when you're working with many international contributors and artists to fill up to 200 pages. If worst comes to worst, HOLO 1 might ship a month or two later than anticipated. We are prepared however to take every precaution – hire more labour, have backup plans ready – to avoid that situation. If a delay does occur, it will be in the interest of maintaining the high standards we have for our first issue.
Professional fulfillment is just as important to us as the quality of the magazine itself. We're working with a top-notch fulfillment service to ensure that both the magazine as well as your rewards will get to you as fast and safely as possible. If an item gets lost or takes too long, we will investigate and, if necessary, send a replacement.
