Frequently Asked Questions
The Movie Madness collection was appraised by a professional independent appraiser in 2017 to be worth more than $585,000. We believe, however, that for a city like Portland a collection this vast and diverse is priceless. If we do not meet our Kickstarter goal, Movie Madness will close and the collection will be lost to the public forever.Last updated:
We're not the first store to go the nonprofit route. Santa Monica’s Vidiots went nonprofit in 2012. Scarecrow Video in Seattle took the plunge in 2014. And Baltimore’s Beyond Video launched a successful Kickstarter earlier this year. Increasingly, movie lovers have realized that streaming services can’t be trusted to preserve access to movies. Streaming options are increasingly limited and fragmented, subject to ever-shifting studio deals. There is no guarantee that access to movie history will be preserved if we rely on corporate streaming services to do it for us.Last updated:
We will primarily focus on preserving and expanding Movie Madness’s existing physical media collection, since those are the formats for which Movie Madness has rights for rentals/public access. Digitization involves extensive technological investment and acquisition of additional rights for public access. We are interested in exploring digitization possibilities for some of the rarer titles in the Movie Madness collection.Last updated:
The Hollywood Theatre is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All non-reward contributions are fully tax deductible. For donors who opt to receive rewards, contributions will be tax deductible less the fair market value of rewards received.Last updated:
Unfortunately, no. Kickstarter only lets you choose one reward tier at a time.
Good news, though! We’ll be sending our Kickstarter surveys through a service called BackerKit. This means that the project ends, we’ll be able to offer our backers a chance to add additional rewards (including our pennants, enamel pin sets and t-shirts). So don’t worry, you’ll be able to select some extra rewards if we’re successfully funded.Last updated:
The unlimited rental period begins January 2nd, 2018.
For 3 Months Unlimited Movie Rentals backers, your unlimited rentals expire April 2nd, 2018. For 6 Months Unlimited Movie Rentals and 6 Months Movie Lover Combo, your unlimited rentals expire July 2nd, 2018. And for 12 Months Movie Lover Combo, your unlimited rentals expire January 2nd, 2019.
You’ll be able to rent up to two movies at a time, and late fees still apply.Last updated:
For $100, you can select a film from the 80,000+ Movie Madness collection to be sponsored indefinitely under a name of your choosing.
After the project ends, we’ll be sending all of our backers a survey to collect the information necessary to fulfill and ship your rewards.
If you chose the $100 “Sponsor A Movie” reward, we’ll ask you to provide a shortlist of up to 5 movies, in order of preference, to be sponsored under a name of your choosing.
Titles will be sponsored first come, first served, in the order we receive completed surveys. If your #1 title has already been chosen by someone else, you’ll receive your #2 title, and so on. If none of your titles are available, we’ll contact you and ask for an additional shortlist.
We will do our best to offer a suitable movie to all $100 “Sponsor A Movie” backers. However, this reward is first come, first served, and no refunds will be provided.Last updated:
