The Hollow Valley Deck of Symbols is an oracle deck based around the idea that the symbols that surround us in our everyday life hold deep power and can guide us towards the magic that exists around us and inside of us. Each card features an archetypal symbol with roots in a wide span of cultures and histories, symbols that have endured change, time, and distance. Symbols that have continued to appear in our dreams, art, literature, and music throughout much of human existence.
The cards are intended to be used much like Tarot cards, with the added intention of prompting you, the reader, to see and appreciate the appearance of these symbols in your waking and sleeping hours.
Often, the magic and guidance we need to find is all around us, we just need a gentle push in the right direction, or something to open our eyes to the beauty in the details.
Each deck features 65 symbol illustrations, each featuring the symbol itself as well as related symbols and elements of the natural world that add to and strengthen the card's meaning.
Oracle cards, like Tarot, are used to gain wisdom and guidance about the many questions that life brings into the forefront of our minds every day. Oracle cards can be used in the same way that Tarot cards are used - in spreads, spells, or as single cards drawn every day to provide focus and intention.
This Kickstarter Campaign is to fund the first print run of Hollow Valley as well as supplies for shipping, rewards, and the informational booklets that will come with each deck. The approximate costs of each of these categories can be found in the spreadsheet below! If I exceed my goal, the extra money will go towards printing more copies of Hollow Valley. Stretch goals (for more Hollow Valley merch) may be added during the campaign.
Kickstarter will allow me to gauge interest in the deck as well as serving as a pre-order platform for those who already know about the deck and are excited to purchase it! It also allows me to reach a larger audience and hopefully succeed in funding a larger first print run than I would be able to initially afford on my own.
Decks contain 65 cards, are printed on matte-coated and high-quality 330gsm paper with gold foil edging. They are standard tarot-sized cards (2.75 x 4.75 inches) and come packaged in a rigid, matte-coated box for protection and storage.
The Hollow Valley Guidebook will include a short illumination on each card, information on the creation of the deck, and several spreads - both classic and new!
The guidebook will be 120+ pages, 5x7, perfect bound, with a soft matte cover.
Stickers are printed on matte, waterproof vinyl.
Small Symbol Drawings:
(These drawings are examples. Each small drawing will be unique, original, and vary between 5x7 inches and 8x10 inches.)
I am an artist, illustrator, and barista living and working in the Southeast. I graduated with a BFA in 2015 and have been working part-time doing commissions, booths, prints, and zines ever since. I love camping, prefer to cast spells outside, am an avid horror movie watcher, an obsessive knitter, and am deeply devoted to the way that light filters through leaves in a forest. I must thank the following people for helping me bring this project and campaign to life:
Drew (Juniper Tapes) for creating the perfect musical score for the video.
Jessi and Liza for letting me thoroughly test drive Hollow Valley on you, as well as being my magical support throughout this process.
Bobby for always believing in me and being willing to give me good, valuable criticism (and for putting up with my anxieties, grumbles, and temporary bouts of insanity during this process).
All of the lovely people who have let me read their cards, told me how excited they are for this release, and have made me feel so proud and thrilled about this project.
Risks and challenges
Luckily, most of the hard work is already done! Hollow Valley and its companion booklet has been fully illustrated, designed, and test-printed. All that's left is to get the funding to print a large run of the decks - enough to supply to all of my backers and to hopefully start selling online and with stockists around the country. Some realistic risks would be delays on printing the decks, booklets, or t-shirts, but since I have done extensive research on my printers and suppliers, I am confident that the printing of the decks and other rewards will happen in time for all rewards to be shipped in October 2018.
